I know I wasn't the only one to see this last night, the opening scenes made me literally LOL. Granted the rest of the plot is a bit thin, the opening scenes more than make up for it. They even have this neat wallpaper up on their official site:

Anyone else enjoy "The Coon?"

"The Coon" rises from the trash and takes his place as a lone vigilante who wipes out crime in the town of South Park

That's it. South Park has officially lost its edge. This particular episode could have been a children's cartoon. In its attempt to satirize (yet another highly popular and obvious target), it makes no clever commentary whatsoever. Having children dress up and act as super heroes may effectively highlight how absurd and pathetic the actual films are and how ridiculous their obsessive adult fan base is (the media and onlookers, etc)... but it's been done before and it's obvious isn't it? It's like shooting dead fish in a barrel. Also Cartman is acting out of character again. This is the boy who killed someone's parents, chopped them up, made them into chili and fed them to him. Now he wants to protect the city? The episode might have been okay if it had gone somewhere. If Cartman went through with the hospital idea, for example. But there was no redeeming moment. In fact after the first 5 minutes there were hardly any jokes at all. It seems like they're not even trying anymore.

Perhaps I did. I wasn't in a particularly receptive mood when I watched it.

Enlighten me.

I'd really like a reason not to give up on this show.

At least their not all preachy and up their own ass with messages

I mentioned the ensueing plot was a bit hollow, I think it was intentional. There was a time in the earlier seasons when the show wasn't nearly as saturated with social commentary as it sometimes gets, I enjoyed it then, too.

And for the record, I agree with you that the show nowaday's is entirely hit or miss. Given they've been on the air 13 years and still making me chuckle, I'd consider that to be quite the feat. Their were most certainly a few lines in this particular episode that did so, despite it's "silly" nature.

[To Butters] Sometimes blowing up hospitals IS for the greater good.

The Simpson's only provided unique laughter for a good 9 seasons, peaking at perhaps Season's 4-7.

Did you even watch the entire episode?

"Anyone seen Mysterion say YEEEEAAAHHH!!!!"

I saw this again the other day and LOL'd, realized it was that guy on T.V. that saw the leprachaun.

Yes I did. Why?

Is there anything that elevates this episode above your average children's cartoon?

"Dude, [to General Disarray] you're a scrotum-licker."

Okay, quick question if anyone's got the time:

Who was Mystereon? I'm thinking Craig, but I've run across a whole bunch of online polls with differing views.

Stan
Craig
Wendy
Clyde
Kenny

?

I know it couldn't be Kyle, and Wendy seems a bit too obvious a choice. I think a poll would be fun.

^It is probably Craig or Clyde. I can't tell those fuckers apart. This ep was pretty weak though. Last week was pretty good though.

Despite wanting to save the city for selfish reasons, he still wanted to save the city. His monologues throughout seemed out of character to me. Not completely out of character, but somewhat. I don't know I just thought the entire episode was shit I guess. People are more forgiving of South Park. If any other show had a character dress up like a super hero like this episode did, without any pay off, it would be universally regarded as shameful. But somehow Cartman does it and some people actually nods their heads in approval. I really don't get it... I liked the latest ep though, about the economy. So maybe I was too quick to give up on South Park. It's just that it used to be consistently brilliant and now it's about 50/50 hit-and-miss. It used to be one of my favourite tv shows and now it's just something that I watch to kill some time. Honestly, I'd prefer it if Trey Parker called it quits at the end of this season cause after watching The Simpsons and Family Guy die, I really don't want to see the same thing happen to South Park. The plug should be pulled when the show starts to decline, not when it becomes unwatchable.

That was easily the worst South Park episode I have ever seen. Boring as fuck, obvious as fuck and not even remotely edgy. The next episode (capitalism as god) was better but still pretty pissweak. I agree that the show may have lost its edge. Hopefully the rest of the season is a bit better.
