Bluelight and the Aussie Internet Filter – Will it affect us?

UPDATE | Senator Conroy has released a statement saying the leaked list is not the ACMA blacklist, but that there are "some common URLs to those on the ACMA blacklist". "ACMA advises that there are URLs on the published list that have never been the subject of a complaint or ACMA investigation, and have never been included on the ACMA blacklist", he said. Wikileaks said that the published list was "derived" from the ACMA blacklist....

I still look forward to when the ACMA blacklist does leak. Im sure it wont be long now.

EDIT: actually I look forward to when CONroy admits that the ACMA blacklist has leaked, as debate is still raging over if this IS a copy of the full list with nothing removed for the filters or not... (whirlpool)

If they want to seriously prove that the list isn't theres, they should let people ask if certain sites are on the official list.

Obviously they can't release the list itself, but they could let people inquire about a specific url.

on another topic. i don't know how extensive the trials are, but i did hear that iprimus would be one of the ISPs to trial the filter.
and in the past 2 weeks i've noticed my internets (iPrimus) been clagging up worse than a datsun 120y with a blown engine

part of the bundling with my signup was the "speed" of the ADSL+ that they provide. if they implement the filter, then they cant provide the speed specified as part of the contract.
i think i may have found a way out of my contract.

of course the ISP is not gonna mention it to their customers if it is a penalty free opt out.
i know this because a company that i work for had a price increase in 07 which was over the 5% of the CPI. and even though we were explicitly told not to advise our customers of this, if any customer mentioned it. the contract would be cancelled and no breach fee could be applied.

so hopefully with my cust service and disconnections/loyalty experience i can find a way to talk my way out of it. cos fucked if i'm paying for slow arse, censored internet.

Actually it seems pretty obvious to me why they don't want the list released, because it is pretty much a directory of child porn 8)
 
i would have thought child porn would be more likely to be spread using newsgroups and p2p rather than websites.

and i also thought that the ACMA had already admitted in a previous statement that the filter will be ineffective at blocking kiddy pr0n

The only thing that the ACMA have done is modify the list to reflect their version of the story. Handily enough, apparently the latest version of the list has already been leaked.
 
a few points:

1. Conroy is a member of Opus Dei

2. It's obviously that apart from the right wing position Conroy has that Great Wall is being used to get the likes of Xenophon and Fielding into the ALP machine. These two independents are killing the government and its bills in the senate (as we saw last week).

3. Until a mainstream group like the Unions or Business get involved its going to be extraordinary difficult to stop the proposal.

4. ALP won't give a shit unless you hit it where it hurts, i.e. votes or money (both). Seriously no one in the government is going to get into a knife fight with Conroy who, if you've read what Latham has to say, is one of the biggest hypocrite in parliament.

5. Lastly a grass roots campaign bigger then any before it must be launched now, it must get big business involved, namely the telcos, and all other stakeholder groups that will lose out financially.

The hook cannot be one of protecting freedom or such like what the fringe groups are complaining. Seriously no one in the mainstream gives a shit about freedom of speech when it comes down to child pornography.

Instead you'll need something like big job losses to motivate people.

Therefore someone needs to draw a picture, get the stakeholder groups (big money ones). They also need religious groups and then they need to campaign in upcoming local and state elections.

pah sending letters to your MP will be as effective as a spam filter.
 
In case anyone is interested Stephen Conroy will be on the ABC's Q&A this thursday. You can submit potential questions for him on their site: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/qanda/ though which are actually asked is anyone's guess. I'd suggest succinct, meaningful and challenging queries for him, like why is he ignoring all industry advise in the matter.
 
So anyway I've been through the list.

Firstly, the vast majority of the websites are legal porn sites. These range from the kind of sick and fucked up shit you can only get on the internet (like the kind of 'here's a girl, we're going to degrade her until she cries') through to stuff that's about as risque as a playboy centrefold. But they're mostly legal. Even the ones with 'teen' or 'lolita' or whatever in the URL are just legal teen sites.

The next biggest category is: dead links. Heaps of the urls in the list are dead. This reflects how stupid the idea of a list is - the internet is not static. Many of the banned websites either no longer exist or have moved url. It is especially hilarious that some of the banned URLS are links to blog posts from ages ago that no longer exist.

Then there is some weird shit like websites that just have lolcats on them, and a few totally innocuous sites that have been widely publicised.

All in all it's a complete joke.

Wikileaks claims it now has up to date ACMA blacklists of banned websites dated 11 March and 18 March — only days old.

"Should the Senator or anyone else attempt to discover our source we will refer the matter to the Constitutional Police for prosecution, and, if necessary, ask that the Senator and anyone else involved be extradited to face justice for breaching fundamental rights."


So has anyone here seen the second leaked list? Wikileaks was down every time I tried over the weekend. I had a short flick through the first leaked list (the 2k long one) As others have said its hardly suprising to see things like gambling etc on there.

Holy shit. I always suspected this madness could only be sponered by some powerfull cobal of secret societies. I.e. the Illuminati / The New World Order / Billdeburg / Trilateral Commision / CFR. And now Conroy is a member of some Secretive Catholic Sect. I shall investigate further.

The internet filter is pure Policy creep. Today Child Porn. Tommorrow Bluelight. The day after, P2P !

OK, lets for a moment assume that Senator Conroy is a truly noble individual, with no personal agendas, on a selfless quest to eliminate child pornography. Wouldn't $45 million be better spent on actually tracking down pedophiles, and locating and freeing abused children?

Essentially it is costing $45,000,000 to pull the wool over our eyes! Just because questionable individuals cannot access this material, are we so naive as to believe pedophiles will stop molesting children because their 'fans' cannot enjoy the moment with them?

DO NOT go to Google, search for 'ACMA Secret Blacklist Aug 2008' and click on any of the top pages. We, the public, do not have the right to see the blacklist.

It's rediculous, we have one of the slowest internet networks in the developed world and they are going to slow it down even more to stop less than 1% of the population looking at bad things on the net. It is beyond a joke, soon we'll have CCTV all over the place like the UK and cops on every corner. Seriously things like kiddy porn are beyond bad but why should we get punished for those sick bastards?
 
wikileaks is back up. I had a quick look through the (new) list for bluelight and didnt find it on there.
