Pet Peeves

Here is one that really pisses me off. When people take something that wasn't really funny or clever the FIRST time, and repeat it a thousandth time.

For example, in sports forums, people like to change the name of a steroid user such that "roid" is part of their name, for example, "Barroid" instead of Barry, or "A-Roid" instead of A-rod.

Did the person who first came up with these (and similar ones) really think they were being all that clever?

And even if they were clever at one point (which they weren't), why do people think they are funny or clever when they repeat it for the thousandth or millionth time?

Along similar lines: Combined celebrity names, such as "Brangelina," and "TomKat." I cannot believe that anyone, anywhere, ever thought these were clever or funny.

And, perhaps worst of all, why is it that when a scandal breaks, people have to use the word "gate" to describe it?

I have seen "spygate" (in regard to the patriots taping defensive practices of other teams)

and

"skategate" (to refer to the Tonya harding - Nancy Kerrigan scandal many years back)

I have heard dozens of others, but i cannot think of them offhand. This is just plain stupid. The famous Watergate Scandal was called as such because it happened at the Watergate Hotel. It was NOT a scandal about "water," so therefore I do not see why a scandal about ______ should be called ______gate. It makes no sense.

"Gate" just happened to be half the name of the hotel. Why don't people refer to new scandals as "Water_____" ? Then we would have "waterskate," "waterspy," etc.

Ridiculous right? Well, _____gate is just as ridiculous.

I could go on for days and weeks. Something minor pisses me off at least 20 times a day; 50 times a day if I actually leave the house. If I drive anywhere, the number of irritants has to be expressed in scientific notation.

some famous comedian - the name of whom escapes me - called. he wants his material back :)

alasdair

Surely you jest. I don't watch comedy routines. If soemone else said something similar, it is purely coincidental.

If someone could provide a name though, I would appreciate it, as I might actually find this comedian funny (unlike most).

yeah, another pet peeve. Comedy routines. I cringe when someone says, "You gotta watch this Youtube video (or something similar), it's so funny." Then he or she puts it on. Why not just email me the link and let me decide if it is funny? People often do this with a 10 minute clip or longer. Do they expect me to sit there with them and watch the whole thing? What if I don't like it two minutes in? Why are they putting me in this awkward spot of telling them I think their taste in comedy sucks?

Related pet Peeve: When someone says, "Oh man, have you seen _______ (TV show, movie, etc) ? It's so fucking funny. There is this one scene where BLAH BLAH BLAH"

(person then attempts to recreate the scene and usually fails miserably).

1) If you want me to watch the movie, why are you spoiling parts of it by telling them to me ahead of time?
2) What makes you think you can recreate comedy and do a good job of it? Much of the skill in being a funny comedian is the delivery. If you Can do that well, then go get a job as a comedian instead of standing here wasting my time and annoying me.

Why not just say, "_______ is a funny (movie TV show etc), I think you'll like it, I recommend you check it out"

Boys and text messages.

Is it so difficult to give a timely response?

I'm not talking about oh-my-god-it's-been-three-minutes-and-he-hasn't-responded-to-my-text but come on, it does not make you less of a man to respond to a text message in a timely manner (less than thirty minutes, please.)

When people don't get you are being sarcastic and/or joking and look at you like you are the meanest person in the world.

kc, I have the opposite problem sometimes, I'm being dead-serious and people think I'm being sarcastic...wtf?!

when people cant detect sarcasm...

yesterday i had to stay after school for tutoring(ugh),so i come home and my moms like "How was it,was the tutor nice?"

i was like "oh god no,she was wicked mean" you could clearly tell i was bein sarcastic, then after like 2 minutes of silence my dads like "She was mean to you?!"

He was serious.....

I was like "...."

This would annoy me about anyone, but my dad does it ALL the time.

He will be sitting right by my mom and I and she and I will be have a conversation and say something like "Oh yeah did you hear Florida exploded today?" and a minute later my dad will be like "Oh, hey! Did you hear that Florida exploded today?" like he just came up with it on his own.

It's just he hears us say it subconsciously but thinks that it just popped in his head. It happens like 80x a day.
