paroxetine, more commonly known as paxil. I know its in the upper echelons of SSRI's (selective seratonin re-uptake inhibiters), that is, drugs that block the re-uptake of the neurotransmiter seratonin in the brain. by blocking the re-uptake, it helps the seratonin to act on receptors. 20mgs is a pretty standard starting dose. Like other SSRI's, it won't work instantly. You need to take the medication for 1 1/2-2 weeks for it to build up properly in your system
Since your prescribed amount is 20mg, its a safe bet that its the DAILY dosage, i.e., take only one daily. only modify your dosage according to your Psych. It's likely that over time you will need to increase the daily dosage, but thats somethin youll talk with the doctor about down the road.
I've been on Paxil for over 3 years now and I find it helps. Is this your first anti-anxiety/ anti-depressant? If it is there are a few things you should know. In adolescents Paxil can cause extreme depression and thoughts of suicide. In some cases, this can occur in adults.
If it does, it could simply mean you need to switch meds (theres a broad spectrum of SSRI's).
Oh, and I drink on it, shouldnt be a big deal.
just remember to take only the prescribed amount and call your psych if you experience the above mentioned side effect. best of luck with feeling better
