I live in MA and do believe that Obama had a direct impact on the passage of the recent decrim bill here. I will explain why:

A decrim bill was up for a vote 8 years ago or so and it did NOT pass.

MA is a state with a very large number of young people as residents as many of you may know MA has very, very many colleges, some of which have relatively large student body populations.

I think that it is also fairly well known that Obama had an impact on getting young people interested in politics/voting and more young people were out voting in this past election than in previous ones. I don't think this is debatable.

So, while Obama was not behind introducing the question on the ballot to decrim 1 oz or less of MJ in the state of MA, he was responsible for getting young people out in large numbers to vote.

It passed 65% to 35% in MA. I don't have access to the records of the average age of the person voting in favor of decrim vs. the average age of the person voting against it..... but if I were willing to bet.... and I am.... I would bet that the average age of the people who voted in favor of decrim was much younger than the average age of people who voted against it.

This bill did not pass in MA because a bunch of 55 year old people voted to decriminalize 1 oz. or less of MJ. It passed because tons of ppl under the age of ~ 25 were out there voting, and regardless of whether or not they vote for Obama, Mcain, or whoever..... they virtually all voted to decriminalize MJ.

Actually, Marijuana Policy Project had the most to do with this. They had mini questions on the ballots every year to see how much support they had and then pushed the bill through

I love MPP, now I won't get in so much shit long as I have under an ounce :).

When a real change in marijuana law happens, CNN/FoxNews/MSNBC..... it will be breaking news and you probably wont read about it on BL first

Very true... they would make such a big fucking deal of it, and probably bash it too.

I seen this thread and was like, damn I just got done ragging on the man in another thread for raids on medical marijuana dispensaries/patients which he said he would end but the man is finally decriminalizing it.
MCMG, do you not realize that the main fucking issue when it comes to medical marijuana and to a lesser extent decriminalization laws is that your fascist FEDERAL Government (which Barak Obama is the head of) fails to recognise the laws of the STATE Government? Lucky you, you live in Conneticut, that doesn't make Barak Obama or his Government fucking heroes or responsilbe for this.
Can you wrap your head around that mate? For all you know Baraks Govt. will overturn everyone who gets a fine or a warning and prosecute them under federal law, it isn't neccessarily likely but its a bit early and stupid to be singing the cunts praises over this, which has got fuck all to do with him, don't you think?

hey MCMG, get your shit straight. Grass is decriminalized in many states, that means nothing. Fines and citations still exist. Just because your state changes its laws doesnt mean the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA deems it so.

I know they were behind getting the question on the ballot.

But the same or similar question was on at least one previous ballot and it did not pass.

How did they 'push the bill through' exactly? And you are telling me that it 'passed' because it was on the ballot? Didn't it take a majority vote for it to pass? How exactly did MPP develop that majority vote?

I think it is much more easily explained. Like I said, tons more young people voted this year than in years past, and as we all know, mj legalization/drcrim is much, much more popular with young people than old people.

I didn't claim Obama was behind this in any way. I'm simply saying that he got young people interested in voting. And since they were all out there voting this year, when it has been widely known that young people vote much less often than older people in general in years past..... and they are staring a mj decrim question in the face, well what are they going to do? This is why it passed.

I've been loosely following MJ decrim for 20 years (actually more). Young people passed this in Massachusetts. The orgainzation you mentioned got it on the ballot, and Soros put some cash behind it, but it was the droves of young voters that got it passed. No one from MPP called my house to encourage me to vote for this bill.

ok, I can concede that he did have some minor indirect influence on the issue, but MPP had the vast majority of the direct influence. MPP put mini questions on ballots for several years prior to the decrim bill to survey and build support over the years. Also, considering the wide margin that the question passed by I would bet that young voters were only a small part of that.

In reference to the bill you talked about being defeated 9 years ago. That bill had nothing to do whatsoever with decrim. It was simply a bill to revive the 1981 "Drug Dependent Persons Act" to allow for more cases of diversion programs. At the time only a judge had the authority to grant diversion which had fallen out of practice and was rarely used

I'm not talking about a bill, I"m talking about previous ballot question.

Do you think that because people read the question on a ballot more than once that is what made them change their minds?

obama aint doing shit medical marijuana besides ignoring the crap out of it. Are you not aware of round 2's results?
