Nirvana: Kurt Cobain is one of my top most favorite guitar players, and singers of all time. I loved the music he wrote. He wrote alot about his addiction, and his relationships with women, along with steady use of drugs and alcohol. He was a crazy son of a bitch, I saw him back 93,and he was the SHIT!!! verry shortly after he passed away, They said there was alot of Rohypnol and alcohol in his blood. So Wish him well where he is heaven or hell.

Alice in Chains: My boys from Seattle, Washington!! They started at local bars, pubs, and local back yard shows. it was in 1986 when Layne Staley started a band. The band at the time mostly played "Speed Metal", music. A Local promoter watched and listened to Alice in Chains at a little show. but before they did anything the Police raided the studio and was full of Marijuana( the biggest bust in the state). The death of Layne Staley was one of the hardest times I've had in my life to. You can see his pain if you google the song name "Nutshell" d i thinks its on MTV unplugged, him in his dark glasses doped out on heroin.

So who do you think gets the gold Cross??

But I feel AIC are much more musically inclined.

I may have to agree w/ this one. Its all due to Cantrell really, guitarist, as he is credited w/ the music and lyrics of many of AIC's songs. Nutshell included ! Sooo yeah much more creative and unique but Nirvana overall rocked more IMO. I mean Nevermind, forgettaboutit as they say.

Apples and oranges, in a lot of ways. AIC came from more of a rock/metal background. Nirvana had more of a punk/indie influence.

But were on a creative decline when they broke up.

Panda im sorry if yal did this before, I was listen to AIC while i was feeln bad and felt like maken a topic.. listening to nutshelll now b/c my christmass sukass hole no family no one. I did go to church and prayed for a better next year to quit fkn drus..
Ive haad a shhityy christmas and all, but AIC chains is awesome when ur in the mood like no one cares for you, espically this time of the year.. well for me at least.
AIC explains it for me.
soorrryy panda if it already existed, i wanted to bring it to life!!!!!

He was actually sober for that performance. That was the storyline, that he was sober but so pale and emaciated because of all the drugs. If this is wrong then someone tell me how they know. All I've heard is "dude look at him, you can tell he's on heroin" and "he keeps fucking up b/c he's doped out." The only two songs he fucks up on are Nutshell (which was the first song of the concert, he had just walked out and was catching his breath/still getting his voice ready to sing), and he fucked up the words to another song but immediately says "FUCK" and they start the song over. If he was on dope, then why do fans who were really into AIC (when the Unplugged album came out and before that) claim that he was sober? And it was in a magazine or something, that he was sober during the actual performance...maybe I've got it all wrong. I'd really like clarification if anyone knows for sure!

The Nirvana Unplugged situation is more documented, Cobain was sober and asked the MTV producers to get him some Valium, and the pricks wouldn't try.

As for AIC vs. Nirvana, I choose AIC. They were better instrumentalists, and I love the way they arranged their songs. AIC arranges many of their songs in a unique way that no other "grunge" band could match. Staley's voice is leaps and bounds above Cobain's. The bass player in AIC is fucking crazy awesome, while the Nirvana bassist did a lot of simple stuff (which is common for grunge/punk music). Kurt Cobain was the best songwriter out of anyone in the two bands, but collectively, the edge goes to Alice in Chains over Nirvana.

If I had to pick one I'd say Nirvana.

Now, I like early AIC but their long-term influence on music has been overwhelmingly negative. Nirvana certainly spawned some bad imitators but nothing compared to AIC. They singlehandedly spawned the "Active Rock" genre.
Next to Robert Plant, Lane Staley probably has the most imitated vocal style ever. Not knocking the man himself but I am sooooooooo tired of hearing fuckers try to sound like him.

Man, beast thread idea, even if it's been done before. When all my friends were into Nirvana, I was just all about AiC. Dirt has got to be one of the greatest albums ever made. I just loved Layne's expressiveness, and the unabashed bluesiness of Jerry Cantrell's guitar playing. Their seminal song for me to this day is Junkhead. It just expresses so much of how I feel about drug culture versus "The Normals."

When Kurt Cobain died it hit me, and it was definitely a loss, but when Layne died I broke down and cried. It was so much more tragic to me, given his circumstances-- outliving the fame of his band, seeing the death of the grunge icons, descending even further into his addiction, and finally dying alone... I've never heard another voice quite like his.

And yeah, I'll second (third? fourth?) the love for Nutshell.

This one is easy for me- Alice In Chains.

When I was 13, they replaced Pink Floyd as my favorite band and it hasn't really changed since. There are other bands I might listen to more....but AIC will always be my favorite.

They just had that sound, ya know? Lars Ulrich said they were a modern day Black Sabbath and I totally agree with that.

I'm one of those singers who was influenced by Layne. Can't blame him or Alice In Chains for their influence on anyone else....and you certainly can't call it negative. You may not like the band's they have spawned, but any time someone influence's another, or many others, to create....that's not negative.

And while there are elements of AIC that come through musically in what I do, it's what they taught me about complete expression that influences me. You can hear EVERY bit of emotion coming through their music....they held back on nothing.

And this isn't mean to discredit Nirvana in any way. EA-1475 nailed it earlier by saying Chains is more rock/metal while Nirvana was more punk/indie. I'm a metalhead, it's natural for me to go with Chains.

Oh and spaceyourbass, Layne fucked up a couple other times at that show...in "Down In A Hole", the last chorus he gets lost lyrically, sings a wrong line and stops for the next....then in "Got Me Wrong" I think he forgot to come in for a harmony.

But Jesus, after not playing at all for 3 years....that's no surprise. I make more mistakes at shows after playing 3x a week for 3 years!

I don't know if he was using for the show or not, don't really care. I know Jerry got food poisoning that day from a hotdog vendor, which is why you can see a trashcan next to him onstage, in case he had to spew.

The sad thing about Layne is that he from this-

To this-

(I don't mean the mistake....I mean the overly apparent decline in health/vocal ability)

If you don't already have it, get your hands on the Mad Season disc above. Layne has some great shit on there...

Oh...and dig this, he sang on a Heart tune called "Ring Them Bells" (Bob Dylan cover).... one of my favorite Layne pieces....absolutely perfect...
