OK so i've got myself a protein powder which basically contains not only protein but also calories and vitamins, the aim being to simply assist me in gaining a kilo or two.

I was told to take THREE per day, one with breakfast, one after a workout, and one before bed.

I think three is a bit excessive, so instead I take two per day and cut out the one before going to sleep. I find I can't sleep if I have one before bed because of the energy packed into each shake (and also for some reason it has TAURINE in it. Not exactly a cocktail for putting yourself to sleep.)

So all I basically want to know is how effective will taking two per day be as opposed to three? Will I see the same results except only after a longer period of time? And also what happens if I can only for whatever reason take say one or even none for a day or two? Is that really bad? Some friends think it's a waste of money and isn't going to work properly if I don't take it exactly how I was told and be very consistant in drinking them.

Thanks in advance :)

Ehhh.. Taking three protein shakes a day sounds extremely unnecessary.

Two shakes per day plus the right amounts of other foods should be plenty, right?

yeah depends, 3 a day is the right amount if you are consuming a fair bit of food and working out and stuff but-- In the morning is the best time to have one straight down cause your body has just fasted for say 8 hours and whether you feel really hungry or not you need food. You need protein but it's also important, more important, to eat some sugarish foods as well as a slow releasing carbohydrate cause your sugar blood levels have dropped while you've been sleep- tis why cereal and stuff is mostly all carbohydrates with only a tiny amount of protein coming from the milk, if you mix cereal with milk 8). So as well as that unless you eat eggs or meat every morning, your in need of a protein shake 8o %)

After a workout you need one cause your muscles need to repair so they dont break down, to start that repair process you need a food with complete profile of nutrients that can be absorbed as quickly as possible. Whey Protein Isolate ;) I mix mine with water after the gym cause milk is absorbed a bit slower, and it also fills me up and milk has a semi-complete profile but is unnessesary compared to other, more solid, foods. Wholegrain Bread &/ Oats + Red Meat, Chicken or Fish. But is does come in handy for that extra bit of good fat that you need when you're working out. Not too much though.

If you're really going seriously 6 meals a day, gym 5 days a week type thing then yeah a protein shake before bed definatly - or Casein, a protein powder but one that gets released slowly so you have food through-out the night. Or a mixture, whatever. I find if I have too much Casein it clogs my stomach.

Bodybuilding.com has good deals, everyone everywhere can benefit from having 1 or more protein shakes a day. You can feel the difference.

peace out

How many grams of protein in each suggested size shake?

And taurine is pretty beneficial for sleep, it clears your head/focusses you and can help get into a relaxed state of mind

sounds like 1 a day type of deal to me, no point in ODing on vitamins & more is not always better with vitamins & trace minerals (think zinc!).

Serving size: 80g

Protein: 34.75g

And sorry if I said vitamins and minerals, it doesn't have any besides sodium and potassium at 89 and 84 mg respectively.

It has a bunch of 'essential' and 'non-essential' amino acids also. :)

Ok, so what you've bought isn't whey protein, its a weight gain formula. Which is essentially whey and sugar.

How much you take a day is dependant on how many calories you already eat, how many you burn at the gym and how many you want to be hitting to put on some mass

If you are busting your ass at the gym then you'll need the extra protein to make bigger gains. At the very least eat half your weight in protein (g) a day. 180 lbs = 90 g. IMO the more protein the better. You can't hurt yourself if you take in too much, you might chunk up a little if anything. Keep track of your diet and you should soon realize how many protein shakes you need.

Always drink one before bed. Remember sleep=fasting, so try Casein powder since it metabolizes at a slower rate.

well alot of the stuff is true all these guys are saying but the fact if you are looking for mass 1 lb of weight is 1 gram of protein

Rember this is a "supplement". You don't NEED to take 3,2 or even 1 a day to gain weight- it only makes it easier to. I'd take one it the morning and one after workout. You could take one before bed but you could also eat a protein based meal (like steak or tuna) or have a caesin based shake and have (pretty much) the same effect.

but also calories

how many calories? Is it like 150kCal or like 500kCal?

Remember that an 80g serving is prolly going to be 2 (or more probably 3) scoops (that used to trip me up...)
