I've not heard the best reports from people who've been to Cuba.

In general, I'm not really a fan of the carribean however i'd love to do an England test out there!!
 
my sister's spending christmas in the cayman islands with her friend and her friends "completely legitimate" accoutant type dad and family. am very jealous could really use some winter sun

In case you misunderstood when I said Trinidad I didn't mean the island of Trinidad (& Tobago) but the town in central Cuba. :)

What have you heard? I bet all the folk you know who've been are those rice types who go off to the resorts and never leave the complex, just spend all day sunbathing at the side of the pool and drinking at the hotel bar at night then have the cheek to claim they've been to Cuba. :p

Cuba aounds good to me, seems like a fascinating place with lots of interesting history.

Nah, the only people I know who've done the resort thing is my missus's parents. They did a day trip to Havana but found it very disappointing.

Other people I know who've been have done it on their own. All have said that everyone is out to fleece you, Havanna is pretty dirty and it's nothing like the place that you imagine. The blokes who went did say it was good for a piss up, but you had to do a lot of watching your back the whole night.

The place is very poor, so I guess Western tourists are pretty good targets.
 
Everyone is out to fleece you the world over so whats the difference. What was so dissapointing about Havana for them?

I don't really imagine Havana to be anything grand or have many ideas of what it'll be like so I can't see me being too dissapointed.

You must go to some shit places then.

I imagined Havanna to be very beautiful, with welcoming bars and kerbside food place.
 
^ Well i rarely feel i'm in danger or about to be fleeced on my travels. Maybe a couple of times in Bangkok when I've taken a wrong turn or two after too much dope, and once in Miami after some stupid directions, but it's a pretty rare occurence. Actually one time in St Lucia as well.
 
I was thinking more of being hassled than fleeced actually, someone always wants something from you or to sell you something.

I've only ever felt in danger in the RLD district Amsterdamage! Big scary cracked out mofo in illuminous pink trousers and bright green waistcoat with a 2 by 4 plank in his hand trying to force us to give him change for some food. He was swinging the thing round like a mad man. Cunt. :D
 
Hahah, the RLD can bit a bit worrysome at night (and under the influence!), and we've had a few "interesting" moments.
 
This was the middle of the day!

I've always been fine wandering around at night / early hours of the morning. We were having tons of banter with the crack and smack dealers last time and asking them for direction, one was even kind enough to show us to our hostel as we'd gotten a bit lost. :D
 
Are Lying Planet books good to buy just so you can read up before you go, so long as you don't take it out with you and use it like a bible?
 
Don't see why not. Good to get an idea of places, things to do and see, routes of travel etc like you already said just don't walk about with your nose planted in it 24/7 following it to the letter.

As much as they have loads of untrue / dodgy info in it there's loads of decent info as well.
 
Spade, what jabs did you have before you went to SE Asia, how long before, and how much were they?
 
Ummmm I cannot remember 100% for sure off the top of my head, go to your doc and they'll be able to tell you.

I seem to remember it was just one I needed though, possibly Hep B as the others are the ones you get whilst at school anyway (tet, polio etc) and was offered rabies jab but didn't take it as it's not essential, just avoid stray dogs. It was about £40 for the jab and think it's 12 weeks before or longer though don't quote me on that. I actually paid £80 for doxycycline malaria tablets from a private clinic as I wasn't registered with a doc and was running out of time. That was stupid as if I'd taken 5 mins to register somewhere I'd have gotten them for a couple quid just for prescription charge or for pennies out a pharmacy over there.
 
You need to get a Yellow Fever jab and certification of it from a dedicated Yellow Fever clinic in the UK, lucky they have one in Bristol
