Phenethylamines How can I purify 2C-B at home?

My friend has some 2C-B wants to purify it at home. Despite the username he's not Walter White.

Is it possible to do with water or alcohol?

It's supposedly HCL poweder. Any tips?

He doesn't know what the impurities are.

WASHING 2C-B

Step 1) Go buy epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate)
Step 2) Go buy acetone from the hardware store.
Step 3) Cook the epsom salts in a baking dish in oven at high heat for at least 3 hours with occasional stirring.
Step 4) Dry the acetone by placing the anhydrous magnesium sulfate in the acetone and swirling for 15 minutes or just leaving in the acetone overnight.
Step 5) Filter out the magnesium sulfate with a coffee filter.
Step 6) Crush the 2C-B into a fine powder
Step 7) Place the crushed 2C-B into a small glass
Step 8) Pour in some acetone into the glass
Step 9) stir the 2C-B and acetone
Step 10) filter out the 2C-B using a coffee filter
Step 11) Allow the acetone to evaporate off the 2C-B.

Explanation: If you don't dry the acetone with the cooked magnesium sulfate then you can expect losses. 2C-B-HCL is virtually insoluble in acetone. However, if the acetone is wet (has any water in it) then 2C-B HCL will dissolve and you will lose it in the solution. Cooking the magnesium sulfate drives off water and turns the magnesium sulfate anhydrous. When anhydrous magnesium sulfate is placed into acetone, it will absorb any water that is in the acetone.
If there are any soluble impurities they will go into the acetone while the 2C-B HCL does not. You can evaporate the acetone afterwards to see if there is any residue (impurities).

RECRYSTYALLIZATION USING ANHYDROUS ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (Optional)

Step 1) Crush the 2C-B into a fine powder
Step 2) Place the 2C-B into a glass or mason jar
Step 3) Safely bring 99% (anhydrous) isopropyl to a boil
Step 4) Add the boiling isopropyl alcohol to the glass until the 2C-B is completely dissolved
Step 4) Place the glass into the freezer and leave overnight
Step 5) Filter out any crystallized 2C-B using a coffee filter

Explanation: This process is pretty explanatory. 2C-B HCL is slightly soluble in boiling isopropyl alcohol and the impurities tend to be more soluble in it. So you get everything into solution, and then cool it causing the 2C-B to precipitate out while the impurities stay in solution. It works great after washing to reconstitute the 2C-B into a more crystalline form, and also helps to remove impurities. If there is much color to the isopropyl afterwards, you pulled that color from the powder.

RECRYSTALLIZATION USING DISTILLED WATER AND ACETONE (optional)
Step 1) crush the 2c-b into fine powder
Step 2) place the 2C-B into a small mason jar
Step 3) add small amounts of hot distilled water until the 2C-B is completely dissolved.
Step 4) Add small amounts of acetone until the solution starts to cloud
Step 5) Add just enough water for it to clarify again
Step 6) Place jar into freezer and leave overnight.

Explanation: 2C-B HCL is soluble in water, especially hot water. It is insoluble in acetone. By dissolving it in water, and then adding just the right amount of acetone, the acetone acts as an antisolvent and allows the 2C-B to crystallize into beautiful crystals.

2C-B HCL is usually made during a 2nd purification step and is often quite pure as is. How necessary is it to wash it? It's probably not but some people want to KNOW their drugs are as pure as possible.

If this process is too complicated then I don't know what to tell you.

lot of effort unless it's a large amount....

if it's not much.....unless the impurities are dangerous just increase your dosage....

I believe if you pop it in some cider with an orange peel and leave it in the dark in your closet for 6 months it will be purer than a motherfucker.

What makes him think purification is even necessary? Does he know how to swim?

Anyways, what color is the 2cb? Brownish or more greyish? Are there spots of other colors? Is the pain from snorting indescribably bad or just pretty bad or kinda bad or sucky?

In my experience pure 2cb hcl is almost off white grey. Impure stuff tends to look more brown. Very Impure stuff will look brown and even different little spots of colors in the powder and visibly looks impure as fuck... but to be honest, I've never noticed any side effects of the impurities. Not that they might be cancerous or otherwise invisibly dangerous.

If you snort it and aren't in terrible pain for a good 15-20 min it's not very pure. If it hurts but doesn't feel like being smited by Jesus himself, its less pure. I will never forget the time I snorted 15mg into each nostril of pure. One of the most acutely painful things I've experienced... and I've had kidney stones.

*I may be misremembering and confusing 2CB HCl with 2CB HBr. My junk head has very poor memory these days.

The notion that the hydrobromide and hydrochloride have different colours is wrong. Both 2C-B HCl and 2C-B HBr are colourless materials. Both white and discoloured 2C-B may still have impurities, whether or not they are harmful depends on their concentration and what they are, both of which you can not determine by looking at a powder. Usually, most of the colour disappears with a solvent wash, so colourful product to me always suggests the cook didn't take basic measures to clean their product.

2C-B upon slow recrystallisation can yield see-through crystals which look like sea urchids, unfortunately these usually crumble apart on filtration and drying.

Attached is a picture of someone who really took care of purity by recrystallising 2C-B HCl in IPA by extraction with a Soxhlet:

I have some 2C-B that I think has 2C-H in it, I've not had it tested yet but reviewers have said it tested for 2C-H and I saw some similarly coloured stuff on Wedinos test as 2C-B major with 2C-H minor.

I haven't tried it and bought some other 2C-B instead. I assume the 2C-H can't be removed, as I understand it's a precursor so probably beyond me to remove, unless it's solubility is different to 2C-B?

Recrystallisation from hot isopropanol has a good chance taking care of it.

@xdrc is probably right. 2c-h and 2c-b salts are both slightly soluble in isopropyl alcohol so washing or recrystallizing it should remove the 2c-h and a tiny bit of the 2c-b.

Why even remove it though? Its thought to be essentially inactive as a psychedelic. Unless its a significant % i really wouldnt worry about it.

Does a successful isopropyl wash not rely on a difference in solubility?

It seems there is less known about 2C-H than 2C-B, so the safety profile seems less certain? Even if it was totally inactive it still makes my 2C-B less potent.

Either way, I have bought some other better 2CB that I'm happy with, so I don't have much to lose by trying a wash.

Not necessarily. Some purification methods are non selective, meaning that they can remove a bit of everything. Activated carbon is a good example, it frequently absorbs a bit of everything. It's great for removing tiny impurities, not so great when your impurity is 30%. As an example say you have 100g of something that is 70% of your target compound and 30% of an impurity. To remove that 30% impurity you might also remove 30% of your target compound. In the end you're left with 40g of target compound which is not ideal. However if your 100g is 97% of your target compound and 3% impurity, after a carbon scrub you might end up with 94g of just your target compound which makes a lot more sense.

Sometimes washing can act the exact same way. It's actually a pretty good way to to gain a few extra % purity mitragynine in my experience.

Probably true. It hasn't been studied as much because it's thought to be inactive or extremely weak. And sure it's making your 2C-B less potent but you may lose some of your 2C-B in the process of removing the 2C-H. If your impurity was sugar would you be willing to sacrifice losing some of your product to remove sugar? You could just take a tiny bit more and not lose anything.

Not trying to convince you of anything but I personally wouldn't worry about 2C-H as an impurity. It's probably pretty common in 2C-B as a result from incomplete bromination.

Thanks for explaining that.

You're right it's probably not uncommon, or a big issue. I might give it a go anyway, I haven't got much to lose and it's fun getting my beakers out and pretending I know chemistry.

One time I sniffed a vial of amber xtreme that I got in a batch of fragrance compounds, and it felt like an icicle stabbed me behind my sinuses, and then I promptly vomited.

So even fragrance chemicals should be carefully wafted.
So I got to open up Sasha's cabinet once. I should have wafted. Instead I just smelled pretty nonchalantly and got lightheaded. If I'd smelled any harder who knows maybe I would have passed out and fell into all his chemicals.
