Been pondering this question recently and found myself regularly changing opinion so thought I’d see what others think.

On balance, I think that SM fucks with everybody just not necessarily in the exact same way. So I’m a “Both” chooser.

What say you?

Brainrot for all. Flee! Return to the homey backwaters of mid-2000s forums and bulletin boards.

Tangent: was Spade the ginger from Dundee who had a penchant for tall tales and SE Asian pharmacies?

 :
"to call a spade a spade," which means to speak with blunt, direct honesty and call something by its true name without sugarcoating it.

 :
Instead of being a "one-size-fits-all" problem, its negative impacts shape-shift based on a person's vulnerabilities, personality, and habits.
Here is how social media "fucks with" different people in different ways:

Call a spade a spade" is a figurative expression. It refers to calling something "as it is" rather speaking truthfully, frankly, and directly about a topic; ...

What do you mean by fck's with brh ! Isn't that just life how it is anywhere !!

"energy is neither created nor destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another"

@Ki3ly I would say younger people can easily become damaged in terms of being fed severely altered notions on normality. Unrealistic beauty standards, unrealistic “success” standards, online bullying etc.

Older people are often extremely gullible and fall for the most ridiculous (mostly Facebook) bollocks. Scams are also a particular problem for older generations.

@Larch the very one! It has long been an EADD tradition to include a Spade option on any and all polls. This will continue to be the case as long as I’m around 😁

brainrot for all 100%

BUT

youngsters brains just aren't developed enough to cope & deal with it as well as older folk.

I was old enough to realise that it was fucking cancer when it started to get popular and decided not to bother wasting my time on it, 20 years later I'm so glad of that choice! i think I dodged a fucking bullet

Wouldn't Bluelight, and other niche forums or discussion groups also be classed as forms of social media?

Although for active members I guess they tend to promote or prompt the members to actively create posts, which presumably is at least a bit more beneficial for the mind, than passive 'doom scrolling' the dreaded short form content, which is all too easy to fall into on some of the other forms of social media. At worst Bluelight could be compared to 'idle chatter', even for active members, but at best, it can feel like more than that. I dunno. Maybe I'm delusional :ROFLMAO: :cautious:

But there are far more lurkers than members who actually create posts logged in at any one time, so I guess for all the lurkers, Bluelight isn't all that different to other social media.

It's debatable I suppose. Because it is possible to set up the pages and people you follow on the other social medias to be less or more brain-rotty, according to your own preferences.

I've seen some of the people discussing the so called science behind the damage that doom scrolling short form videos is meant to do your attention span, and supposedly also fucks up your dopamine levels.

I have been following some advice which seemed to be sensible, of generally avoiding screens and scrolling for at least the first hour or so of each morning, so that supposedly you give your mind a bit of space to set yourself up better for the day ahead.

It all sounds good and sensible in theory, and I've been doing this for a few months, although tbh I'm not sure if I notice much, if any, significant difference :\.

It does make a difference if I'm actively doing stuff when my elvanse and or kratom kicks in, as opposed to being online. I'f I'm online when things like that kick in, then there I'll tend to stay, and the prospects for productive days are much higher if I'm already doing something purposeful and constructive when whatever I've taken kicks in. Because then I'll already have some momentum, and it's getting that going that can be difficult, if otherwise you're chronically "stuck" to your phone screen or computer. I think this applies very strongly to many people with ADHD, but I guess it's also very similar for non ADHD people.

It would stand to reason that young minds that habitually passively doom scroll short form content, rather than read, listen to, or watch something that involves concentrating for longer periods of time aren't going to be setting themselves up with good habits for life, at the very least.

I dunno if there's any science or studies on any of this yet, but I guess there must be.

yeah fair point, I guess I draw a distinction between iteration and long form v short form.

I've also been using bulletin boards (dial up BBS pre-internet) and forums for decades, it's a fundamental way that the internet started out, it's just part of how it's always worked.

More interactive and longer form the less cancerous, 20 second vids with a like is much worse in my mind.

I'd say it's better, there's a stronger sense of community imho, I've hung around a lot of forums in my time, big and small, and despite (because of? :ROFLMAO::devilish::alien:) the bickering is got a great community feel about it.

wish more people would join in though, fucking hell if people doing drugs and posting shit on the internet isn't entertaining I don't know what is.

there are studies, shock horror it's bad very everyone, more so the youngsters.

direct correlation to short form video as well IIRC

My teenage daughter had started writing letters she isn't on SM, wouldn't be surprised if she came home with a bunch of 78s.
That's great. I'm starting to hear mutterings about people thinking of giving up internet use completely, if all of the talk of surveillance, monitoring, and policing, actually becomes a truly oppressive and completely unavoidable reality.

It certainly is an option. But I don't know if it's one I could take.

I think I need the internet to keep my mind occupied, but maybe that's just the habit I've fallen into.

As humans, we're extremely adaptable, although I'm certain this would be a difficult thing to have to adapt to for me.

But I can definitely see the appeal of the "Fuck You" principle. "You've ruined the internet, and now I'm not going to use it any more."

it's become the new opiate of the masses.

the sheepeople are happy, the overlords are happy.

I use it a lot for entertainment/mental stimulation, then again I have a 30+ year habit with it, the early days were the wild fucking west, crazy times. The years before it were just as nuts if you were in the right circles but things were a bit tamer and it was much more geared to piracy

Hate how people act like utter cunts - were they always like that or is something about being surrounded by other cunts on social media that encourages it in you?

I know twitter turned into a nazi cesspit but even in the leftwing days it was all about cancelling people for one wrong sentence - sitting there like a fucking judge and jury and condemning people.

If look at instagram for stuff about 20 mins a week but twitter is a horrorshow - never touch it.

If you were a twat in days gone by, you'd have to actively seek out other twats, but most people would laugh at you or hit you.

Nowadays it's possible to live in echo chambers to a whole new level. If you want to reinforce what you're thinking, you will be indulged.

It's the right and the left these days, and if you're in-between then you'll get drowned out.
