Nice little easter egg.

The capsule is in fact clobenzorex and it does technically contain two hydrochloride moieies (sort of) so 'phenyldihydrobenzorex' isn't technically correct but is quite possibly how someone with at least some knowledge of chemistry might try to describe it. I would give an O-level student 3 out of 5 as they note the two benzene rings, the benzylic moiety and what might appear to be two hydrogen-chlorine bonds.

I would credit them with having made an informed guess because effort was made to overcome gaps in their knowledge.

I suppose one might term it a farce-à-clef in that the script, set and acting all conjoin to make it a fantastic scene, BUT the author went that extra mile to nod to those few people who would recognize the capsule and understand that Danny the Dealer is playing with Withnail's expectations... since it seems he was their drug dealer, he of all people would KNOW the pair were about to crash so implying that he was offering a powerful sedative was to lure Withnail.

The joke of course being that it's a STIMULANT so rewind the clip and it opens with I (Bruce Robinson) talking about how chronic stimulant abuse strips away a person's nervous system until the inevibable crash.

FYI I was on nodding terms with a small group of Gabber fans from Leiden University. They all consumed far, far to many illicit amphetamine-type stimulants. But their idea of a joke was if one of them fell asleep the others would use a fine brush to paint a layer of their 'whizz-de-jour' onto the lips of their slumbering companion. Then scream... Think about it, when startled awake, if a person feels something is on their lips, the instinct is to abstract whatever it is using the tongue. I think it a very similar and very cruel trick. I mention it just to show that such things really do happen.

Worse still, if they judged (speed freaks being renowned for judgment) a member was consuming to much of their yaba they would spike them with acid! For fun!!

Our drunken capers never got to that level,they were mostly very crude like trying to shave off someone's eye brow when they were passed out ,saying that I might have preferred to go home to my mother and father with half an eye brow rather than a head full of acid lol

No, I've met and interacted with far more dealers than most and at best expect total disinterest but a professional manner. They have something to sell, you want to buy that thing. Business over, they just leave without a backward glance. Business is just business and they see dealing as just a step to get the money to do something (more) legal.

But I would say the MAJORITY like the power. In fact are themselves addicted to the power. I've watched a group of dodgy E dealers who one week couldn't get any E so they bought speed and microdots of LSD, crushed them together, put them into gelatin capsules and went off to sell their produce AS E.

But worse, 'as a laugh' they would crush 4-5 microdots and put them in one capsule, hold it up and all have a good laugh about it. Dealers are HORRIBLE. The professional ones are scary as business includes ensuring competition is 'disuaded' and bad debts end in examples being made, the rest get caught in the end but harm people needlessly because it's all about the power.

Oh, they always get caught in the end. Retailing by definition is the most high-risk end of the business. The people who smuggle in tonnes of class A drugs often never even see the product. They silo others who only know the bit they need to know and let them take the risks.

But those large-scale importers are more able to accept 10% of their product being seized and even plan for it as a cost of doing business. Sometimes they even tip off the police so the police put all of their assets into stopping a smaller shipment while a much bigger shipment is unmolested. Sacrificial cargos are a known stratergy.

But look at the Encrochat disaster. Even city traders making millions and who could launder money at such scales were caught because they couldn't help themselves and posted photographs of the rare and expensive sports cars their crimes paid for.

All of those people needed external validation. That's what it all comes down to. The need for external validation.

Now who knows who produced and sold 'Explosion room odourizer' for years. It was vanilla extract and methylone AKA MDMC (which does smell nice) because as far as I know, nobody was ever charged for that one (or even identified) because while everyone knew there was MDMC in there, no list of ingredients was given so hard to find retailers guilty as you would need to prove mens rea. But whomever pulled of that one clearly needed no validation and even now nobody knows who was behind it.

Doing something ONCE in a way that makes framing a charge difficult and stopping the moment the loophole becomes common knowledge and walking away seems a successful stratergy (I can name a couple of others). But ONCE is the key.

Moderation isn't a behavior I've seen in dealers but hey, maybe I met people who I didn't know were dealers? Best way to keep a secret is not to tell anyone...

Yes unfortunately, the people who drive around through the small hours deriving this and that ,usually without insurance get the full brunt of it
