Film Why did so many 70s horrors have NOTHING horrory happen until the very end?

I wanna like some of these movies, but like the last-ten-minutes pay-off, even when great, rarely feels worth like 1hr50mins of virtually nothing. Like, more no-burn than slow-burn?

Butttt I'm loking for exceptions, where it IS 100% worth it?

I've experienced two. I've ALWAYS had insomnia and my parents were pretty cool about not forcing me to lie in bed for hours and hours if I couldn't sleep. I saw the ('76?) Sissy Spacek version of Carrie at like 10 years old. I had never heard if it yet (didn't start reading Stephen King for another year) but the opening scene was the first time I saw like full-frontal nudity in a movie and then you get glimpses of her powers immediately so I inda thought it might be like Matilda for adults [which isn't entirely wrong TBF...it's KINDA like if Matilda was a school-shooter) so I spent like 90 mins really empathazing with her and then being so happy for her and my dumb-fuck kid brain assumed it would have a happy ending and the pigs blood would NOT end up on her, so it was a genuine shock for me when it did, then her revenge, ofc.

The other one, I was like a teen maybe and watched Don't Look Now without knowing anything about it. I don't even wanna give away the ending, but I did NOT see it coming.

Donald Sutherland is fantastic in that film iirc

Only seen the most famous segment of it. It was even parodied on the puppet show, and I got one from a FB, that I gave to my antique-loving ex.

I even had a picture in a dating app of me talking to my mother on the phone, vaguely based on the segment.

There was a film I seen that did not make sense until the end, called Voices.

Yes, some 70's films are atmospheric, while others take ages to get going. And the gore just usually looks like gooey, red paint, giving it a dated feel.

Those type of movies exist and are good --- not my type of movie though.

I think its a delayed gratification less is more type of thing? Idk I am no director --- if that is the correct position even

PS - The amount of movies and TV moments that have been parodied wrong over and over again is strong evidence of some kind of mandela effect (To me) -- as far back as henry the 8th and the turkeywing painting.
Back in the day there were only a few channels and everything had to be approved multiple times -- it is hard to believe they misquouted so many things over and over. "Im here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and im all out of bubblegum" is a good one.
Sorry thats smokeys conspiracy ramble for the post (The very strange 8 minute fight scene in that movie is great too -- by great I mean "WTF" at its finest) "They Live" A conspiracy guy classic -- I dont believe the things most of those ppl do though lol

my sister and i loved - and were scared by - that movie growing up.

i recently tracked it down again and we watched it together last time i was in the u.k.

it had aged but it was great.

there is a sequel: trilogy of terror ii

it's basically the same movie rehashed.
