Crawling toward the light
I have never been more ill than the time my appendix acted up. It never burst, but oh my god, I knew I was dying in my trashed house of doom. It was a mess. I would crawl to the toilet when needed. I recall taking a bath and just crawling back to bed without drying off. My gf pleaded with me to go to the hospital, but there was no way for me to get from my bed to the car, let alone then be driven 5 miles to the hospital. In the end I called an ambulance, which was pointless, as they had me walk from my bed to the ambulance van. I guess that's what I had to do though. I was quite emotional and cried the whole way there and then even when I woke from the surgery they said I was sobbing. I recall a nurse saying "What are the tears about!?" Maybe he needs his suboxone dose.

Oh yeah, so I was so ill I couldn't even be bothered to take my suboxone dose! Now THAT'S FUCKING SICK! So the nurse of course put it in wrong and mostly wasted the dose, but I did stop my sobbing!

I was hoping to hear from others who have been through the appendix experience or anyone who has had a different surgery, but similar situation of not being able to do ANYTHING you were that sick and almost died !!! Please, tell us al about it! Did they hit you with the fent? Were you horrified by the actual operation area of the hospital? Mine was in a creepy basement, and when I was wheeled down there pre-surgery, I heard people screaming in agony, and that of course propelled yet another tsunami of tears from me, lol!

My husband’s appendicitis was a mess. I had to force him to go to the ER. They did quickly diagnose appendicitis though, and admitted him.

After they admitted him they left him waiting for hours! His pain got intense and they were handing him oral pain medication which wasn’t even taking the edge off. I kept telling them it wasn’t helping and that he usually never complains of pain. Finally I asked them how they knew his appendix wasn’t going to burst since they were not getting him into surgery immediately, which got their attention I guess because they took him back.

it turns out it had burst and it was a mess, they had to keep him in surgery for quite awhile. Afterward his bladder was messed up and he was unable to urinate when they pulled his catheter.

He was supposed to be in the hospital 24 hours and ended up being there almost a week. They finally discharged him with a catheter and on medication for his bladder. They were able to take out the catheter after several weeks but he’ll be on the medication for his bladder and will have to see a Urologist for the rest of his life.

Appendicitis is a medical emergency, I am still amazed they let him sit there for hours until it burst.

What a hell-hole this ER was! Too bad they let him sit that long. I sat around a long time too, but I was on IV antibiotics which seemed to quickly reverse the progression of my symptoms.

They started me off with a CAT scan I believe, and THEY COULDN'T EVEN FIND my appendix! They asked if I had maybe had it removed, lol. EVentually they decided to go in there and find it.

My bill came in the mail some weeks later: $56,000.00 (this after it being discounted from $110,000 the bill said). It turned out I had forgotten to email them my insurance card.
Now I am waiting on the updated bill w/ insurance. Customer service said it should be about $5,000.00. This still sucks but I can manage.

$5,000 is still a lot though, but thank goodness you had insurance.
