Misc Suvorexant (Belsomra)

I’ve had trouble sleeping since the 70s. Been on nearly everything (exaggerated) best drug that worked for me was discontinued (Dalmane) I was on Belsomra for a short time, didn’t work for me. Currently taking Docupin 10 mg, 3, 3 mg melatonin & 10 mg cyclobenzaprine.
Ambian, lunesta, didn’t work. I used to take Trazodone but that stopped working.

I have this fear of not being able to sleep, likely from a history of not sleeping.

I can relate - have had trouble sleeping since the 70s too. I'm going to try the Belsomra one more time - it was so hard to get that I have to give it another try. Lately I've had to take 3 - 10 mg doxepin to get to sleep - which is up from one plus melatonin a couple months ago. Not sure why it's worse. Sometimes my allergies contribute to the insomnia - and lately there has been quite a bit of dust and pollen blowing around.

I tried Belsomra but it didn't do that much to help me sleep. I initially tried the 15 mg dose and then 20 mg. I once tried 30 mg and that definitely helped. It seems that they have produced this drug at somewhat of an ineffective dose, at least here in Australia. For sleep, I now take 150 mg clonidine, 112 mg pregabalin (1.5 capsules), and either 50-60 mg of baclofen with 50 mg trazodone or 100 mg trazodone + 100 mg quetiapine. I have very long-standing sleep problems and haven't tried to go to sleep without tablets in almost 30 years. I once tried and was awake for 4 days straight.

Thanks for the reply. Insomnia as been an issue for years and so have used predominantly 10-30 mg Doxepin to get to sleep. Also melatonin (with mixed results), L-tryptophan, Hydroxyzine and Ambien. The Ambien is wonderful stuff 2.5 mg's will knock me out but it's addictive and I don't like being hooked on anything, so rarely use it. Hydroxyzine makes my heart flip flop - so I no longer take that. The Doxepin does the trick - sometimes in combination with L-tryptophan or melatonin. The reason I no longer want to take Doxepin is because it is one of the drugs they say seniors shouldn't take because it can cause cognitive decline. I don't have any of those symptoms but don't want to take any chances. Doxepin also causes weight gain. So Belsomra is supposed to be safe for seniors, non-habit forming, doesn't effect weight and doesn't effect sleep architecture. There are numerous bad reviews. But the people that like it - like it a lot. So fingers crossed. I will follow up after tonight and share how it goes tonight.
Yes, I understand. I've used 'em all too minus the doxepin. Melatonin was excellent at forcing deep REM and feeling refreshed in the morning at first, but it completely stopped working. Hydroxyzine is okay, it doesn't knock me out like others say. Won't touch Z-drugs with a 10 foot pole. Never going on the benzo/Z-drug train again. Seems the only cure for me is working on anxiety/rumination/racing thoughts. It's tough.

Aren't you a mess the next day on that much melatonin PLUS cyclobenzaprine? Both of those drugs (high-dose melatonin) leave me a groggy nightmare the next day. I've had a bottle of Flexeril sitting here for about 6 years. I take 0.3mg melatonin for the record. I find microdosing it worked much better for me.

Edit: Also, I just looked it up and there were 2 Belsomra commercials. I knew I wasn't nuts.

Halcion is pretty good as long as you dont abuse benzos

Yes microdosing melatonin works better for me too ambien and lunesta were pretty garbage to be honest.

My doctor prescribed baclofen - for neck pain - but haven't tried it yet. He also prescribed BUTALB (Butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine) which is supposed to help with sleep and headaches I get from the neck pain - but haven't tried it yet. Last night was able to take 10 mg Doxepin and 2.5 mg Ambien and slept like a baby. Too bad both these drugs are bad for seniors - got to find something else. Has anyone tried 5 Htp? or Ramelteon?
