Exposure risk(s) for an indoor grow in a state that is mostly legal

Greeting bluelighters,

I am in the US and I live in a state that has legalized medical marijuana, and that has plenty of OTC delta 9 product.
I have a grow tent that I have been using for veggies and poppy currently.

I want to grow some cannabis for friends but it is still illegal to grow your own in our state.

**I will do this or not do this regardless of comments here, but I'd like some thoughts on this.

Is there any reason to believe local law enforcement will be able to get a warrant or detect the grow?

Essentially, I am weighing the risks. I don't smoke anymore because of the paranoia, but several of my friends and family do, and I like to grow things <g>.
I can source the seeds, and I have everything I need to make a nice hydro grow, but I worry that either the smell will give it away, or I end up hospitalized for some reason and the paramedics note the tent, or maybe just because of all the stuff I have ordered gets tracked.

As of now, the poppies are gone, and it looks 100% legit despite the optics.

I guess what I want to know is, if I did decide to grow a batch, would everyone on my block smell my huge-ass plant despite the carbon filter?
Are there any tools LEOs use that might be able to localize it for a warrant, etc...

For the record, I am not looking to sell product or anything like that, I just want to grow and give my friends some free, good bud, but I do not want to risk up to 5k and 5y in jail and have a 3rd degree felony on my record.

If there is anything I am not thinking of that counts as a risk, please gimme' a shout.

Thanks for your time all!

Neighbours smelling it and reporting you to the police would likely constitute probable cause enough to justify a search warrant and the ensuing should they be so inclined. You'd want to make certain your tent is up to the job for sure. Also consider what the neighbourhood is like and whether or not you think the locals are likely to report smelling a bit of weed and whether law local law enforcement are likely to react. You know your area better than I do.

People grow weed at home all the time so you could argue the risk is low but the potential consequences should you be caught are a lot to consider just for the sake of doing a few friends a favour. And they probably already have access to pretty decent weed right?

Hi Shinji,

Thanks for the thoughtful answer, and rapid response. Despite the setup...carbon filter and all...I still feel like a gorgeous plant would stink up the area. I am a homeowner in a townhouse quad, and my neighbors almost certainly smoke as well. I smell it around my hood from time to time, and we're in a chill area, but it probably isn't worth the risk. If I could come up with a way to annihilate it faster than a raid, I might consider it, but for the moment I'll probably sit tight.

...and at least one of my friends has access to all kinds of goodies, but the rest of my friends get what they can get. Mostly it's because I like learning to master a thing. If I was going to do a grow I'd make sure it was the best anyone in my area ever had.
Fortunately I have plenty of other hobbies <g>

Thanks, bub!!

It seems nobody cares to be subtle anymore, but the thing is i'll never want to be a moderator myself anyway. So, lets pretend we ain't read the crucial details, which allows me then to just ask this simple question: is your electricity hooked through a "smart meter"?

Essentially, I am weighing the risks.

The risk with a smart meter is a schedule working like a time-coherent metronome, especially in the 12/12 flowering phase unless it's autofems. Another would be Civil Asset Forfeiture once a flag been raised at the electric company. You don't need to get accused nor even proven guilty to have your money, car and house taken away. While law enforcement always welcomes public donations for coffee machines, donuts and other necessities...

I belive if someone has some sheer will, they can be capable of upholding their morals. Why so? I know some friends of mine do, in Netherlands, and is mostly just 2 plants to 4 maybe. But usually 3.

and they do not sell. They live a functional life as well ;)

A functional carbon filter combined with a adequately sized exhaust fan will eliminate the smell for the most part. It won't stink up your building. if your grow tent is designed to integrate a filter and fan (and I guess it should be) I don't think smell will be a problem. exhaust fans are pretty noisy though (might be annoying for people in the apartement) and more quiet models might be expensive.

this is of course not advice regarding the legal concerns ;)
