After what FEELS like way more effort and time than was originally intended ---- I have got a Vidja Game Machine - I opted for a Ps2 with a 2 tb hardrive containing 600 games or something like that?

Amazing what ya'll computer people can do. Sat down with it yesterday and tried about 10 different games out -- All worked flawlessly!

I did (for)get a couple of problems but that is on me --- PS2 games be DARK AF (In a you need to adjust the brightness Alot) Was having a good time playing Scarface: The world is mine -- than got trapped in a dark rooms hallway..... I simply could find no way to go except backwards so until I can find the brightness adjuster I will be sticking to the less dark (usually more kid friendly games -- Boo!!!)

This is PROBABLY me as I have not played ps2 in A LONG (Think decade at least) amount of time --- controller felt a LITTLE less responsive than I remember.... ( I will have to plug the old one in and test a disc I have on the HDD to know forsure if there is any lag or that is just ME )

Sooo I am calling that a GIANT Fcking WIN!!

For those interested it opens with OPL 10th anniversary and says "mcboot" when booting up but I am not saddled with a mcboot memory card (? didn't know that was an option but here I am) -- Than is just a giant alphabetical list of games, no misfires yet! Haha some poor camera views --- and none of the three 'frogger' games are fckin frogger (Oops that musta been ps1 haha).

Why a PS2 not something newer? Simplicity was the idea --- I am really pretty objected to learning new tech. (operating like its 95 out here with no cell).

**EDIT** GIANT THANKS TO @Shinji Ikari for all of the help with me understanding tech and helping me navigate!! FR I owe you one - feel free to cash it in with w/e I have knowledge of!

Thanks To @alasdairm. and @Shady's Fox too for the last info on the pinging ---- made me decide against a "Newer console" (Glad I did!)

Sorry I missed this post! I'm so glad to hear it all worked out and you've enjoying that sweet videogame nostalgia. Everything still working well a month later.

Modded retro consoles are awesome I love homebrew stuff like that. For years I've entertained the idea of picking up an old NES shell or something and building a mini PC inside it to run retro games via emulation but I'm yet to get round to it.

As I mentioned a few weeks back I picked up a steam deck in the black Friday sale which I'm loving. Currently hopping between Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and find it incredible that either of these games can run on a handheld, nevermind one that released three years ago.

This thing plays PC games from the Steam store but you can also install emulators on it. I haven't gotten round to that yet as it'll be a day's work and I've been busy but once I've got it set up I should be able to play just about anything from the NES through to the Wii U era and everything in-between.

Having grown up with a Game Boy that any of this is possible continues to blow my mind.

I have beat from russia with love --- and operation winback 2 project poseidon --- and started a shitload of games evil dead silent hill origins -- super mario 64! (Lol).

I actually have 2 as the first one got held up --- but the second one is 240v and I need to find a damn adapter for it. (Shoulda thought of that!)

Highly recommend if you just wanna buy something that is plug and play and dont need the latest and greatest. ( I still argue ps2 is the best system - the survival horror catalog is amazing. Although prolly not as cool as newer games admittedly )

Yup about a month in and it has been played for like 8-12 hours a couple days. (Our power went down -- than came back but no internet and phone so it was a great thing to have)

Thank you so much for all of your advice and help! Steam Decks look awesome too -- just a little more learning than I wanted to do -- Clair Obscure (Is that from the "Obscure" series, dark horror?)

Final Fantasy 7 is a great game there is no arguing -- RPG's aren't really my thing but I wish they'd put that much effort into alot of the games I play......I am suprised to hear sean connery doing the voice for ps2 games; they spend alot of money on that shit now days ---- I remember video games as like OG resident evil voice acting.

Shit I had the original gameboy too -- contra was my shit, was like my 7 yr old cell phone lol---- yea than gameboy virtual and it was just like red tinted screen (That was hilarious)

Have you played any of the nicer VR systems? I am intrigued but certainly dont need more

PS -- I got lucky and someone gave me a 32 inch CRT TV --- so the darkness problem is fixed and it is setup in my room so I can do the escapism thing! Cabin fever fixed -- and the roads are undrivable so perfect timing!

I'm inclined to agree. Incredible back catalogue especially for jrpgs (Final Fantasy was my best friend growing up) and as you say horror games, Silent Hill, Forbidden Siren, and even Resident Evil started on the playstation even if they're all multi platform now.

ps1 being back compatible was SUPER cool as I did have a og PS and didnt wanna be switching systems all the time. lol that is where the frogger I want is hiding! I shoulda known it wouldnt be old 2d style on ps2 --- haha pac man world kinda same thing but at least the old pacman is in that game haha

Nah it's a old school inspired "but modern" RPG that came out of nowhere last year as a small studios first game and won game of the year practically everywhere.

I have a quest 2. Superhot VR and Beat Saber (oh and Tetris Effect that game is incredible both in and out of VR) are both enormous fun and worth owning a headset for. VR video can be pretty cool too, nature documentaries in 360 rock.

I don't think the super high-end headsets are worth it but a quest 3 bought in a sale is probably money well spent. Or even a quest 2 is still a solid introduction to VR and you can probably get those near 100 bucks used if you shop around.

The Valve index Steam Frame which'll probably be releasing in the next few months might be worth a look depending on much they try and charge for it but I imagine it'll be the price of a newly released game console at least.

Edit: better link.

I'd love to have one of those but can't afford it atm. How much of a discount was it ?

I heard rumor the new xbox is also going to be compatible with a steam deck -- so you kinda get all the systems in one. That would be pretty cool -- granted my knowledge is very limited and I coulda been clickbaited.

I was lookin back on the history of VR -- have you ever heard of the "Go go TV" kinda the first "Real VR set" -- Im not counting virtual boy -- you actually appear on the screen during some of the games which is cool. They bag on it alot cuz its 16 bit or w/e but way ahead of its time! Only has 8 games and baseball looked like the most fun --- of course that one shipped broken from the factory! lol

If anyone remembers that nickoledeon show where at the end the winners got to be "In a video game" -- this had to be the tech being used. (sorry dont remember the show name)
