UK's new internet laws, are we going to lose our anonymity, and become as heavily censored and monitored as China, North Korea, Russia etc?

Agreed, for all the reasons stated. It has sadly gone downhill fast over the last few years especially.. Crappy AI content, especially on youtube, is another new factor that is dragging things down. Anyone can do that, there is no expertise, personality, or knowledge required any more.

Also all the individuality and uniqueness of finding obscure niche websites and things like that has been vanishing at a rapid rate. All the smaller sites are getting swallowed up by the corporate social media giants and Reddit. Where censorship is pretty hardline, and self expression is limited. Google is largely enabling this by becoming a far worse search engine than it used to be, the returns are now dominated by sponsored websites, and anything interesting seems to be no longer appearing at all.

Google image search is a prime example, now it no longer scours the whole internet looking for the search term, but instead every result directs straight to fucking Pinterest or Instagram. It's turning into Skynet.

What was once something amazing, and still could be, is turning into a pale shadow of what could have been, and of what it already has been but is no
I remember in the mid 90's being forced to get an email at college. Dial up was horrible.

Especially if you lived off campus and had to dial into the colleges computer system. ( I prefer to live alone)Dorms, yuck no way) My friends were to cheap to find a better service.

I have told this story before: One of college friends found out about the internet and asked me how to use it.

So we leave our respective apartments and go to the North, or was it South halls?
Anyways on a weekday at 1-3 pm I think we go there to the computer lab. It is packed. Both Sides, Mac on one side; normal pc's on the other.

So we find a computer, I get online. Then he asks the computer geek for an email address and a passcode. He gets it and finds a computer, there were at least 60-80 and crowded.

He gets online, because the people next to us left. Why? Same reason I told my friend get your own fucking account.

He did and quickly began looking and then began printing( back then the dot matrix printer took forever and there was a line to the printer.) lots of porn.

So he doesn't care as he waits for girl on girl porn while everyone else is trying to print out their term papers, homework, ect...

His Dumbass, is just waiting for his porn, a lot of it. (Dot matrix printer, it looked like it was from the 80's).

People near my friend left. So did I when he started printing porn that seemed to really disgust a number of chicks.lol

I don't how it ended; actually I don't wanna think about it.lol

Your one to talk, your country is a prison.
Except the "immigrants" don't get arrested, but you are white so be careful.
The subjects must stay in line.

I love your new internet laws. Keep up the great work. 1984, George Orwell( pen name) who would name their son Blair?

Enjoy the high taxes no freedom, expensive everything and your new friends. Isn't THE UK OR THE UNITED KINGDOM, a Monarchy. Be a good little subject and do whatever Big Brother tells you.lol

Blair was Orwell's surname. Eric Arthur Blair.

Anybody else get shot in the US today?

Enjoy the high taxes no freedom, expensive everything…

Oklahoman now living in Scotland directly compares the cost of living in detail. Specifically, on minimum wage - allowing for an idealised $20/h American minimum wage versus the real British minimum wage.

Obviously America is a big place with much regional variation, but an interesting comparison nonetheless imo.

There's been an abundance of videos about this on you tube over the past week or so.

Most of the the videos are taking the alarmist stance that we're all doomed, and anonymity is over! (I know those with the know how always have been able to identify some unprotected individuals online, but this seems to be something else altogether.)

Granted that being required to enter a D.O.B to access adult content is a PAITA, but I've simpy entered a false DOB and there was no checks.

But not just sexual stuff, as now whenever I try to access certain topics on a big corporate discussion board, I'm prompted for my DOB and then my computer black screens and wont do anything!!

I'm already so sick of it, that I've changed my VPN settings to appear as if I am in another country.

Problem solved. For now, at least.

But is anyone concerned that this is just a first step towards something much more sinister?

Like proper ID checks to be introduced next, and potential bans on VPNs?

Are the youtubers sensationalsing things for click bait reasons?

Apart from within you tube no one else seems to give a shit. No on is taking to the streets, not much mention on other social media platforms.

Maybe it's because this first step is rather lame and ineffectual, has no substance or teeth, and already VPN downloads have shot up massively since this was introduced, particularly amongst the under 18s, so that they can continue to access adult content.

I wouldn't like to speculate about where this could end up. But surely as a country we won't all just roll over and accept a fate similar to that endured by the citizens of China, North Korea, or Russia!?

Why are we even suddenly potentially being forced to take steps to align our internet use with such authoritarian and draconian countries?

I know it's all being done under the guise of "child protection", but no one seems to believe that for one moment.

What on earth is going on!!??

@Anyone who is concerned, please sign the petition:

We want the Government to repeal the Online Safety act.

More details
We believe that the scope of the Online Safety act is far broader and restrictive than is necessary in a free society.
For instance, the definitions in Part 2 covers online hobby forums, which we think do not have the resource to comply with the act and so are shutting down instead.
We think that Parliament should repeal the act and work towards producing proportionate legislation rather than risking clamping down on civil society talking about trains, football, video games or even hamsters because it can't deal with individual bad faith actors.

Yes it's coming. Yes it's worse than you can imagine. Digital ID can be bundled with any services, including banking, passport and driver's license, in your digital wallet. Think about the vaccine passports that some countries used during the pandemic. You needed that ID to access public life. Without it, you were shut out. That's how digital ID will work. Don't comply with a government mandate or instruction? They deactivate your digital ID. Now you're locked out of normal life. They can and will use it for this purpose.

Requiring ID to use the internet is just part of it. Internet anonymity runs contrary to government power, so the more people they can track online and personally identify, the better for them. However, with biometric face technology and cameras all over major cities, they can pinpoint your location at any time, and even more so if you need to carry your phone with you everywhere to use your digital ID. Once they introduce central bank digital currency, they will phase out cash, and then they can lock you out of that as well.

I think the western world is about to become a dystopia, if we're not careful. UK is the foreshadowing, they are the pilot project. But all of the Commonwealth countries seem to be following suit. Australia just passed a law requiring ID to use social media. It's always "about the children." Here in Canada, digital ID is being forced through by requiring your consent for it in order to access government services: old age security, unemployment insurance (when you lose your job), welfare and disability. When you sign into these services online, there is now a check box you MUST tick in order to gain access, which says, "Create a digital ID wallet with my personal information." If you don't want it, you have to call them and do everything by snail mail, assuming you can even contact a real human being. In my opinion, the USA will be the last one standing because the red states will not accept this shit.

If I had the money and dual citizenship I would be out of here already. I have no intention of sticking around while the western world experiments with technofascism and social communism. No thank you.

In the meantime, do not consent to these IDs. Read the fine print of everything carefully. They are going to work hard to coerce you or sneakily get your consent. In the end, I think that the majority of the population will just click "OK" to access their usual services. It'll be voluntary at first, just like Starmer said. "We're not going to force you, it's your choice." But that's what they said about the vaccines. Then when most people had the shots, they introduced the vaccine passports. That shit ruined my entire fucking life for 3 years. I knew people who killed themselves because they simply didn't want the shots but couldn't get a vax passport to live their lives. Now they want to make digital ID which is a permanent version of this that is way more invasive.

Here in Canada they froze the bank accounts of anyone who partook in the trucker's convoy, or anyone who donated money to it. I had a friend who donated $20 to the GoFundMe and then her bank account was frozen. She couldn't pay rent or her electric bill, in the middle of winter. Had to borrow money from a friend. It took 8 months to unfreeze her account. The government created the law allowing them to freeze your money because of the protest. Canada lost $65 billion in investment overnight, all left the country... because people are not going to have their money in a country where the government can seize your account simply for exercising freedom of speech and protest. But now imagine digital ID... they don't even need to contact your bank. They just deactivate your ID for being a bad little citizen, and now you can't take money or pay for anything. Can't drive. Can't go to school. Can't use public transit (in the case of China). Can't leave the country. Can't use the internet. Probably can't even make a phone call.

This is real and it's coming.

We already have a digital ID system. It's a gov.uk account, and it's pretty much impossible to avoid having one.

On the one hand it's potentially sinister, but on the other hand it makes dealing with the government far more efficient than most other western governments.

So you can resist the proposed digital ID all you like, but if you have a .gov.uk, you've already signed up to it.

I've yet to have the thought police banging my door down. Imagine the cost of all that extra surveillance.

You only need the GOV ID for government related stuff, dole, passports etc. I think the main worry with a "Digital ID" is that it will be required for other day to day stuff. Banking, shopping etc.

And last time I checked there were still a shit ton of logins required for all the different government stuff, even that isn't all neatly tied up into one account.

You might only need them for that, but as soon as your account is open, the government can inspect your bank account or anything they want to. Not that they will, because they just don't have the resources to do that.

As for shopping, any payment you make by card is already visible to the government. Generally, though, they don't give a shit.

I say that as somebody who's on their radar for stuff that's long in the past.

As noted above, all this stuff has already happened.

Everything about you as an individual is already filed away in both public and private servers under your name, with your address, all your personal and commercial dealings, everyone you have even passing contact with, your face, fingerprints, medical history, etc, etc.

Privacy died decades ago. Wasn’t even a fight.

The Digital ID concept is merely a kindness to let us feel there is anything left to fight over. There isn’t. There is no resistance when things have gone so far.

Tbh we just have to hope governments and corporations don’t let the power go to their heads… surely couldn’t happen… 8o

Uh, let me readjust some big man shitting his pants excuses.

The private gov branches(SRI, FSB, CIA, MI5) so on, already have these data since you were born. Their added there to represent how many require certain critical services and the population number. Stats in one word.

They do not add to anything else, even with someone social ID, nowadays with the current infrastructure is hard to obtain access and in most cases you end up in prison. Now at the very minimum this is unless your life got encapsulated by triades or other self-beneficial clans. These data do not serve other people pockets unless you willingly give a gate to this realm, say.. You own a house, well, if you hand the papers to someone thats it. But if you.. See.
In other order of words, digital privacy is kinda lacking a proper explaination since start. You do help if you choose to share telemetry, like how Kaspersky Security Network is, was made with the help of users plus own company eyes, and currently is pissing on other AV engines without being a antivirus but simply a root of critical grid.

Same with the browsers, there's a limited thing a company can do on it's own most of the time.

Imagine if the backfire of Intel i9-14900 series wasn't acquainted by the customers, then it would stop selling and it yet have to find a rival. It was fixed in a Windows Update patch(temporary) eventually chipset by motherboard manufacturers. Because the amount of emails, Microsoft had to release a quickfix to park the cores plus keep the freq at a minimum. Otherwise computers with this chipset would simply lit up.

Intel did this without knowing that ASUS/ASRock and MSI took too much TDP, and it improved the default boost it has and currently is perfectly stable as daily drive. The chipset was fixed in all other MB vendors through a patch made by Intel for these companies, leaving aside the CPU patch ;)

moral? We need other voices to fix certain shits.

Yeah Americans can be pretty ignorant when it comes to how terrible their own country is. They have the NSA doing all sorts of absurd data harvesting, the PATRIOT act, you can be held in Guantanamo bay with no trial or charge for absurdly long periods.

That however doesn't mean that Britain isn't also a mess

No believe it or not I have a wank bank .its called memory
I know this is extremely appropriate and I understand if you don't want to answer. But do you ever wank to scenarios, not to images/image memory? Sometimes I have hand fantasies whereby a woman and I have relations. I don't know the woman, and it's more like things she'd say to me and the things she'd do. I'm not picturing a woman in my mind exactly. It's more about the scenario.

I don't know if that's region based or whatever but I've never sent FB a fcking thing. I won't even tell them my last name. It's just "No" as my last name lol. (It used to be Nonapplicable but they tried to make me give them my last name some years back so I changed it to No.) They can ban me if they want. PLEASE do me that favor. (That'll just make it extra hard for them to do our governments bidding and track me though, so win~win for me.)
I live in Midwest U.S. and I did something similar. First name is a type of song and last name is a term for a stairway. Never had any problems or inquiries or demands. I didn't do it for anonymity but it still works.

And especially what they do. I've known actual right wing extremists (don't keep that company anymore) who end up getting along with the non-white people they interact with, yet go home and rant about 'the blacks and the Pakis' with their mates.
Have you ever seen American History X? Your comment made me think of the prisoner Aryan Brotherhood that preached white power but did business with other ethnicities.

No, I haven't seen it, but I'm aware of it and would sit down and watch it, given the time.

I just find it so depressing that people can harbour notions of racism, but when they actually interact with people of other races they see them as people and not 'the other', yet when removed from that they 'hate' minorities again.

EDIT: I'm guilty of having dehumanised people in the past. I'm no paragon of virtue, so I don't want to preach.

whereas the US press no longer bothers reporting anything with deaths in less than double figures.
Please tell me you mean us press in the uk.
Because the us press reports about single digits all the time in the u.s. Major and lesser media outlets.

Based on two of your comments you guys in the UK must be getting your google feeds straight from hell. I just now searched for mary jane. seen 50-100 results in a manner of seconds and not 1 from pinterest or instagram. Maybe I'm an idiot and using the wrong search term to stake my claim. Out of an image search for "scary makeup looks" the first 100 results have about 7 pinterest or instagram results. Tongue-in-cheek search of "heroin chic" returns 100 results + and only 1 instagram result.

One person gets shot in the US and it might not even get reported outside of the local press.
I have to disagree but if you'd begrudge me a day or two I can get you an answer.
Edit: I should have said but didn't that most of the singles are of "people of interest" types. If we're going by that I'm pretty sure you've got the best of me.
