OK, so I decided to stop drinking alcohol for my health and I plan to taper off slowly .

My history is I’ve been drinking These things called buzz balls. They are like wine cooler things that are 15% alcohol by volume and I have been drinking them for about a year.

I have noticed lately that my tolerance is going up because I used to be good with four or five of these things a day but now it takes about 10 and I have noticed it in the mornings my hands will shake.

So I was planning on dropping one of these Drinks at a time and I am wondering about how long should I wait between each drop?

For example, I am drinking 10 of these things a day and I plan on dropping down to nine a day first, and my question is how long should I wait before I try and drop to eight a day, thank you all for your time…

I wanted to add and I am a 61 year-old male that kicked a cocaine habit in the late 90s so I have had issues with addiction before, also I have a chronic pain issue with fusions in my neck, and my doctor prescribes me oxycodone and pregabalin, I use the oxycodone every day in the pregabalin about twice a week.

To be honest, the withdrawals after one year will not be as bad as one might think. I would just try to stop completely and see how you feel. If you feel like your starting to withdrawal then take a drink or do a shot of 80 proof.

Consulting a doctor about this is the best route. They can offer a short 3-5 day Rx for Clonidine and Valium to get you through the issue.

I stopped drinking alcohol a long-time ago. I had 7qty drunk in public arrests before I was 21 years old. I was drinking on average 24qty beers a day and would switch to Jack Daniels on the weekend where I would finish a "handle of 80 proof" in less than 36 hours. It got really bad towards the end.

I agree while 10 buzz balls a day is a bit. (They carry there here I know just what you mean -- gettin that sweet 99 cent deal) -- They are pretty small how many Ml are in one?

Probably go straight to like 6-7 with no problem than idk work it from there. Alcohol is one of the only things I haven't managed to get addicted to --- mostly because I fear the severity of it's addiction and harm probably. (Didn't stop me with dope or benzos tho lol)

I save seen alcohol detox plenty of times much worse than anything I ever felt. I did get the point where I would shake in the morning from alcohol withdrawal and still I did not feel that bad. I just needed something to help me sleep and some weed throughout the day.

I have gabapentin,Xanax, clonidine, oxycodone and Kratom on hand I don’t do all of them every day, but I do have them on hand if need be, but I do get the shakes early in the morning sometimes..

I don't know if you can ever taper off alcohol, it would take a huge amount of will power Purley as its avalible 24/7 .add into that once you have 1 drink your brain is instantly rewarded and wants more .I normally try and limit my self to 4 pints of 5 percent beer a night during week but weekends I might add in a bottle of wine or high percentage cider .I think the longest I've went without a drink was during a longhaul flight and then connecting flight home ,so about 2 days and that's in 25 years .the trouble with alcohol is it mixes so damn well with almost every other substance .benzos are no use as they just lower your inhibition and you'll take a drink .your age might help ,I think your mind wisens up as you get past your late 50s although I've no evidence regarding that apart from aging rock stars but theve got loads of money .kratom and alcohol is a marriage made in heaven ,instant reward

Although I've drunk every day most of my adult life I don't get wd symptoms the next day as I know my reward will come when I get home at night from work

Thanks for your time
your welcome. thanks for sharing the thread topic.

Seriously, do not invest too much time into tapering down. Try 3-5 days of tapering the alcohol down and slowly introduce the comfort meds except whatever you choose that will induce sleep from the 1st taper down day.

you have every tool you need to get through this. stay up on water, juice, tea/coffee, and eat what you can. if they are small meals try to have a lot of them often.

Another strong suggestion I have is once you hit day 3 of the tapering down start this procedure :

-- buy "Standardized" ONLY versions of these 4 things. All at the highest mg in a capsule or the highest mg/mL concentrated oil.
-- Milk Thistle Extract
-- Green Tea Extract
-- Grape Seed Extract
-- Cranberry Extract
*** Take all of these at once, correct serving size, with a decent size bowl of oatmeal, and only drink 12 ounces of water when you take them.
*** Wait at least 1 hour before drinking any water, juice, etc. Do not eat anything else for at least 1 hour
*** The oatmeal will help the 4qty supplements to stick better in the small intestine better and longer for full absorption. More than 12 ounces of water and the full effect will not take place.

This will clean & detox your liver, blood, kidneys, and all of the other organs. The better your diet becomes or is the better you will feel as this process takes place. I would say go through at least 3 rounds of refills whatever the servings per bottle & quantity are or at least 3 months. It completely stopped Hep-C from attacking me, I have had 5qty Hep-C tests and all come back "negative." Though always Hep-C shows up in a test proving it was in the liver at some point but "not active" or "nothing to worry about." For the Hep-C I did this detox/cleanse for 18qty. months before the 1st test came back negative.

Hi, mate.

Well done on making the choice to deal with your alcohol use.

As a long term heavy drinker I would suggest that if you drop one of these a week you should be able to taper off with minimal problems. You rush it you suffer more.

The thing with booze is once you have a few then judgement goes out the window but if you've made the decision to stop and you really want to you'll be ok.

If you really want a soft landing you could take some diazepam when you stop drinking to help adjust. The day after your final drink space out three doses of 5mg diazepam, one before bed. The next day two doses, one morning, one night. Then on day three one 5mg dose at night.

Then go forward and don't look back.

Best of luck,

BB

Edit:- just to add I quit heavy drinking a while back.

Everyone is different.

I did look and as best I can work out, Buzz Balls are 200ml each so ten would be 2L of a 15% alcohol drink. In other terms, about 300mL of ethanol. That's the same as a 750mL bottle of a 40% alcohol spirit.

Do check my maths on this.

How fast your liver will metabolize that quantity of alcohol varies based on factors such as age, gender, diet and last but not least, genetic divergance.

If you can speak to an appropriate clinician, I would do that first. I do appreciate that if you also taking a prescribed CNS depressants (oxycodone and pregabalin), that could be tricky. But be aware that they can combine to produce more CNS depression than the alcohol alone.

Since we are all different, what is appropriate for one may not be appropriate for another. So beyond converting the quantity to a total and appending a recognizable equivelent, I decline to offer advice beyond stating that experts exist and if you can access them, they will be better able to assess your situation and offer appropriate advice.

But there are a LOT of great people on BL who absolutely will provide what support they can.

FYI as someone else prescribed oxycodone, I essentially cannot drink. One drink and I can have a 24 hour hangover. I mention this only to illustrate how different two people can be.
