Hello, I have HPPD and have had it since I over-used psychedelics last year. I believe I acquired it by taking LSD followed by overly frequent psilocybin use in the following months. I took a long break from psychedelics (9 months probably) but have returned to using them, but I do it much more carefully. I notice that when I use a psychedelic drug (let's say mushrooms) for about a week or two afterwards my HPPD is heightened, but during this period as my brain reforms its connections to its now 'norm' (normal HPPD level for me) it goes back to normal. I simply just ensure I put a large enough gap between the ingestion of mushrooms (two weeks min.), so that it doesn't get worse. Alongside this, I take daily niacin in order to boost normal neuronal function. I don't know if this helps, but I've been trying it out recently, I believe it could increase the rate of which your brain returns to normal.

Currently at the level I have it, it doesn't significantly impact my life and I am okay to live with this. it's subtle and not overly distracting - but mostly I just don't really care too much so long as it doesn't get worse. As of yet, it doesn't affect my mental state, job performance or cognitive function/general intelligence, but I can say that if it were to be much worse I believe it could.

Honestly the easiest thing is to just stop using, because that way it isn't going to get worse for sure. But if the reward is worth the risk in your eyes then it's really just about being safe and responsible and mainly using without too high frequency. At this current moment, I wouldn't dabble with LSD, since it seems to be much worse for HPPD than psilocybin, but give a year (and a few months of sobriety before and after) and I would maybe consider it. My main advice is not to use cannabis because in my experience it actively prevents it from getting better. I don't smoke cannabis currently but once I take a few months break from mushrooms I may smoke once or twice.

It's all about using your own judgment and thinking carefully before doing things. Mixing two different drugs as well is a very bad idea, and if I were you I would try to avoid the particular substance that caused it in the first place (LSD in my case for example.)

That's all, I hope my information is helpful and ask away if you have any more questions!

I acutally cant use cannabis i have CHS. Thanks for the advice brother. Do you hvaw constant hppd or flashbacks? There are two types of hppd type 1 is where you will have occasional bouts of visuals. And type 2 where there is constant visuals. And also do you use any other drugs like opiods or stims? I appreciate the comment hope things stay well for ya

HPPD never stopped me from using drugs... although, I do now recognize it as a sign that I need to slow down and maybe take a break from the psychedelics.

HPPD never bothered me to begin with. I always had a neutral view on it. I actually find it somewhat entertaining.

I abstained from the substances that caused it for several years and it went away along with the overwhelming anxiety I would get from smoking cannabis.

Appreciate the response. Do you have constant hppd or does visuals just come and go? Also do these visuals interfere with your job or driving? What drugs do you still take as of today?

It comes and goes. Every time I do LSD or mushrooms it comes back for a few days or a couple weeks. If I stop using psychedelics it goes away permanently.

Also do these visuals interfere with your job or driving?
No. I mean... sometimes it might distract me while at work but only for a few seconds.

By no means is it a disabling condition. It's not distressing either, as long as you don't hyperfocus on it and realize its not permanent.

What drugs do you still take as of today?
Weed, psychedelics, pharma stuff, kratom

I can't pretend that I fully know what HPPD is. But I have been watching patterns on rugs and walls for 47 years since I first tripped. I love it. But if it is something else then maybe I would not like it. Yes I see patterns and visuals behind closed eyes pretty much all the time. And yes of course I still take a mushroom trip here and there.

OP if I may ask what is the troubling part of the HPPD? Maybe a clearer detail we can discuss to help. I viewed my visual issues as some extra sensory perception.

I always thought Watching the Wheels mentioned something similar.

People say I'm lazy
Dreaming my life away
Well, they give me all kinds of advice
Designed to enlighten me

When I tell them that I'm doing fine
Watching shadows on the wall
Don't you miss the big time, boy?
You're no longer on the ball

Hi again, I have HPPD type II, so that I experience constant symptoms. But I can also ensure that I do occasionally have bouts of slightly more intense symptoms but they never last for longer than really a few minutes. And no, I don't use any kind of addictive substance like opioids or stimulants (TAAR1 agonists). I stick strictly to psychedelic drugs and will do so for my whole life.

Overall, I'd recommending avoiding opioids or amphetamines (other than psych. amphetamines) anyways (if not prescribed) because of their damaging tendencies. But I would imagine they wouldn't have huge effect on HPPD (MDMA would since it has serotonergic and dopaminergic action.)

And to JackARoe, sounds exactly like you have HPPD to me.

Thanks for the response that might be the difference between you and me. I have constant visuals but they range in how bad they are.

My understanding is that a HPPD medical diagnosis technically requires the symptoms to be disturbing, disruptive, or debilitating in some way.

I like many others experience some visual effects in sobriety which tend to become stronger in the days and weeks after a recent psychedelic experience. Smoking cannabis also induces visual effects which can be strong, and which are usually stronger after a recent psychedelic experience.

While sober, these symptoms have never interfered with my life in any negative way. I don't personally believe that they affect my visual acuity nor cause me any distraction. I don't tend to "see" such things while performing visually critical tasks like driving or working with hazardous objects and phenomena. I am much more likely to see visuals when my eyes are closed or I'm in an environment that is to dark to see clearly. Even in the dark, I have no trouble focusing my attention on the visual facts and ignoring the extra information.

I can't relate to those who experience visual symptoms which are also disruptive. Some here suggest that it's simply a matter of not obsessing over such things, but I suspect that this is not so for everyone. Hence, I tend to think the term "HPPD" should be reserved for those who experience the disruptive form of these symptoms, whatever that is. I understand that many people with the "bad" kind of HPPD may experience symptoms lasting years or possibly even forever. When I get enhanced post-trip visuals, they tend to fade after some weeks to a low baseline that was probably there before I ever tripped.

My guess is that very few people with disruptive HPPD are posting on this forum being that most such people don't intend to take psychedelics again for the rest of their lives. I would certainly be interested here from anyone who has had disruptive post-trip visuals who went on to trip again. How did it work out? Did the condition worsen? Stay the same? Possibly improve even?

I had HPPD following a single high dose LSD experience about 23 years ago. For years i would like at a blue sky and it would look like it was covered in plastic wrap. I would also see tracers all the time. It never bothered me. I continued to trip, and one day after i would say at least 7 years, i noticed these effects were essentially gone.

What all were your sytmoms? I see lines and dots that look like the @ symbol and they move down my field of vision. Along with visual snow. These disturbances are constant but are amplified by light. Are your visuals constant? Did it ever interfere with you working or driving?

What drug gave you hppd? What are your symptoms? Do you have constant hppd visuals or just flare ups? Also i would be curious to know if hppd effects your career at all?

I had minor HPPD for about 8 months around 20 years ago. Effects were visual snow and blobs, sometimes it would interfere with my visual field and distract me from my day to day functioning, it did impact my day to day life.

It was mostly tied to anxiety. I was using a psychedelic around once a week to once a month, most times I would use a substance Saturday or Friday night and miss out on sleep, sometimes combining substances in excess. I also had a relationship breakdown around this time.

Once I got into good eating and exercise habits to control my anxiety the visual snow and blobs disappeared within a few months.

I’ve used psychedelics on and off over the last 20 years, at most once or twice a week, rarely do I miss a nights sleep though. If necessary I use a tranquiliser or depressant to induce sleep.

Last year I went through two months of using a substance once a week, including, 2c-b, LSD, MDMA, MDA and DOM. Given my routine of exercise and sleep, there’s been absolutely no symptoms of HPPD during or after this period of use.

In my case, I expect the symptoms were primarily anxiety and lifestyle related.

I had bad hppd in my 20s after heavy overuse of LSD. Patterns in carpets, rainbows and purple rings around lights, minor open eye visuals, and anxiety. I took fluoxetine for depression at some point, and the symptoms disappeared overnight. I have since used psyches hundreds of times, ut it hasn’t come back. I stopped the fluoxetine after a year.

I though HPPD was just something Reddit made up, or the impact of it at least. I've had wonky vision after smashing a shit load of psychedelics sure but never understood how anyone finds that life ruining. I dunno. Everyone's built different I guess.
