I understand for most it's a Xmas musical, but not for me. I don't think the main topic is about the "danger" of a ruined Christmas but the realization that everything, even if it's considered ugly, scary, or different, has it's place in this world.
It's good to explore different things, and learn. But in the end we are who we are.

It's the story of the Pumpking King, ffs, how can it be a Xmas thing?

Feel free to comment.

For me it's always been about halloween rather than christmas, I thought it was the same for everybody. I love that movie, one of my favs from when I was a child, and still is. I should watch it again soon! One thing that I adore about it is that the songs are sung in french as well (my native tongue). It's translated but it's not cheesy/cheap at all and it's all very good lyrics.

I never heard a translated version. In fact Nightmare before Xmas lyrics were a big part of my learning English journey

Maybe it can be part of your french learning journey! When translated back to english the title is "The strange christmas of Mr. Jack"

I see it as both.
I watch it for both Halloween and Christmas.
It's a goth kid staple, I was that kid once. Heh.
Although it does amaze me that Elfman has no formal musical background yet can do shit like that.
Definitely a big leap from Oingo Boingo.
