If you give gamfexine an alpha-methyl you get something like Recipavrin. (but you still need to hydrogenate one of the phenyl rings)

D86743, the morpholine homologue is more euphoric.

But if you want something that is essentially identical to MDMA, you add a para methyl to one benzene and a meta methyl to the other. Yes you end up with two enantiomers but no, it makes no difference.

It ALMOST got used but ring-substituted aminorex derivatives were just slightly cheaper to produce. But in terms of effect, I defy anyone in a double-blind study to spot which one is the MDMA and which one is the compound I described.
 
It never got used so one has to wonder why, of all the manifold possible reasons, it was not.
