Phenethylamines Mescaline and SSRIs

Just wondering if anyone here has any firsthand experience using mescaline (specifically from San Pedro cactus) while on an SSRI like Prozac? Is this safe to combine?

I'm on a low dose of Prozac, and I have safely combined with psilocybin, with full effects.

The literature says no, the fact mescaline is a phenethylamine is also a larger concern than taking psilocybin due to the stimulant effects of mescaline which can increase cardiovascular issues when combined with prozac.

Personally when I took SSRIs (lexapro) and took LSD the trip was far from enjoyable, bordering on a psychotic episode.

I can't tell you what to do, I can only share information and my own experience, all I can say is if you do decide to go down this path start with a low dose and have a trip sitter.

It is possible that the Prozac itself is unsafe. Please be careful.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL before using SSRI drugs.
At least learn about the common side effects so you can make an informed choice.

On SSRIs causing depression:
Three years before Prozac received approval by the US Food and Drug Administration in late 1987, the German BGA, that country's FDA equivalent, had such serious reservations about Prozac's safety that it refused to approve the antidepressant based on Lilly's studies showing that previously nonsuicidal patients who took the drug had a fivefold higher rate of suicides and suicide attempts than those on older antidepressants, and a threefold higher rate than those taking placebos.
Using figures on Prozac both from Lilly and independent research, however, Dr. David Healy, an expert on the brain's serotonin system and director of the North Wales Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Wales, estimated that "probably 50,000 people have committed suicide on Prozac since its launch, over and above the number who would have done so if left untreated.
...
Now a decade later, Lilly has targeted Dr. Joseph Glenmullen, whose book "Prozac Backlash" has apparently incensed Lilly executives.
Dr. Joseph Glenmullen, a clinical instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a clinician at the Harvard University Health Services, says he wrote the book because he was alarmed by the number of patients who were reporting severe side effects from the serotonin-boosting antidepressants including Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Luvox. "The two most upsetting side effects were patients becoming suicidal on the drugs, and the development of disfiguring facial tics," he said in an interview.

And people will say mescaline and LSD are especially dangerous with MAOIs and yet there is a substantial amount of leeway one has with the MAOI-stimulant combination. Also, in my experience, even the amphetamine deriviatives of mescaline have a very shallow amphetamine feel.

Using mescaline as a substitute for DMT in ayahuasca

Using LSD as a substitute for DMT in ayahuasca

Understanding the safety profile of MAOIs [This post contains anecdotes of indigenous ayahuasca concoctions that push the boundries.]

MAOIs are potentially contraindicated with serotonin and noradrenaline boosters,* but it's not as simple as, say, noradrenaline + noradrenaline = hypertension. Certain tricyclic antidepressants, for example, boost noradrenaline and have little to no effect on serotonin and are considered to be safe with MAOIs. Tyramine, the stuff found in foods, is a noradrenaline booster. If one of these tricyclics is mixed with tyramine while on an MAOI, the tricyclic actually competitively inhibits the tyramine! So it's not as simple as tricyclic = more noradrenaline and tyramine on top of that = even more. Another example:

"The commonest nasal decongestant which is not an indirect sympathomimetic amine is oxymetazoline. This adrenergic alpha 2 agonist can be used safely with MAOIs [18]."*

the fact mescaline is a phenethylamine is also a larger concern than taking psilocybin due to the stimulant effects of mescaline which can increase cardiovascular issues when combined with prozac.

While there might be a degree of concern with MAOIs, which potentiate noradrenaline boosters, there should be no noradrenaline potentiation from an SSRI (not to be confused with an SNRI), although, as you conveyed, any negative serotonergic "synergy" (i.e., both M & SSRIs are serotonergic) would be indirectly worsened by mescaline's noradrenaline-dopamine stimulation.

*"With the appropriate dietary restrictions and attention to potential drug interactions with serotonin and noradrenaline agents this class of drugs can be used effectively and safely."

I'm also interested in the answer to this as I take 80mgs of prozac (I REALLY wish I didn't need it cause it interferes with so many drugs) but I'd like to know, how do you really know you got "full effects" from psilocybin?

I ask cause I've taken shrooms and LSD a bunch of times but my shroom trips are often weaker than I'd like and I was told by someone who has taken them both on and off of SSRIs that even if you take more you aren't ever really getting the full effects of shrooms or acid while on your SSRI.

However, I wouldn't know the difference cause I've been on prozac since I was 14 before I ever used any drugs. It really helps me a lot with my OCD, but I wish I had never started taking it and instead experimented with psychedelics to see if they could help. Now I feel I have no other choice since after decades of being on prozac I don't see myself finding a way to get off it, and SSRIs probably aren't great for you, but that's just the way it is.
