Can he? Can he really? Escalate much more than he already has? Only if he's in a suicidal mood. Don't forget India and China are his biggest economic supporters right now and they tend to not like nuclear bombs going off. It throws off their export based economies.

The Putin I know is selfish. He wouldn't like it, but I think he'd save his own skin and remain czar over destroying the world to safe face. How many times have we called his bluff now? How many times has he been embarrassed big time? Still no nukes have flown.

Before it was "If you send lethal aid to Ukraine we are going to sink Britain." Now Ukraine has invaded Russia and they've actually toned down the rhetoric. Almost like, nuclear bombs are more useful as threats than as weapons. And the more you threaten, the less people even hear it.

India would not be happy if nukes started flying, we already know modi had a talk with Putin about 'concerns' he had, about his CONVENTIONAL weapons/nuclear threats. If that turned into actual nukes flying, I'm sure it'd be a bit more than a talk.

Also dunno if you've noticed but Putin and India's relations have kind of been souring lately. Putin wanted to be paid in rubles but india refused so Putin was paid in worthless rupees for a while that he realized he can't do anything with(lol). I think they might have compromised on the yuan, can't remember, but either way, there's some tension there already.

And China even more than them. And if they (india) do condone it, or even try to take a neutral stance on nuclear weapons being used in an war setting, where the existence of the state is clearly not at threat... that would come with its own political blowback. I imagine it would be significant.

First I would just like to echo what somebody said which encapsulates it all:

Which was (latter) owned by them 50/50 and went so far to put brother of Milosevic as president of the board. Pure cash they stole from Croatia and Serbia (from state owned companies and budgetls) is estimated at around 100 billion of Euros. After the war they, each in his rexpective countries chose their families and friends and gave them everything that was of any worth via robbery called "privatisation". Through that process "chosen ones" got assets that they plundered and sold or simply closed. Till this day this is a public knowledge - not even a secret, but due to real crimes and brutality during the war if you state any of this and call for the law by which the new "elites" should explain origin of their wealth the charges like "enemy of the state" or "foreign agent" are levied like "racist", "bigot", "homophobe" on any person that is not playing along with the newest iteration of gender politics in the USA .

War is a tagedy that robbes almost everybody except the ones that are not fighting it but are causing it and are profiteering from it. But it is easier to hate and act like you don't understand the game that is played than to do something about it. And so it goes in thecsame manner, just different places, again and again...

I'm comparing and contrasting Putin's invasion of Ukraine with how Russia went through eastern Europe into Germany during WW2. What Russia is doing now is not quite the blitzkrieg that it would be capable of unleashing, if it pulled out all stops. Russia could have easily reduced Kiev to dust and rubble months ago. The power imbalance in this conflict is severe. Short of the U.S. arriving with boots on the ground, Ukraine is no match for Russia. Ukraine hasn't got much of an airforce, with which to defend itself. Putin has not exploited that vulnerability as thoroughly as he could have.

Ukraine has suffered terribly. I understand it is small comfort to say that it could have been worse.
