Serious Ketamine overdose in cat

Some of us value freedom and what about all the old Bolshevics that were purged, 5-10 million Ukrainians starved to death and 12+ million in the gulag. Millions executed for nothing. Stalin was evil and all because you are poor doesn't mean you have a right to force poverty, oppression and no chance at a better life on others. Misery may love company, but no one has the right to force it on others. Even China has embraced capitalism, and the people are much better off than starving under Mao.
You may not have much to lose, but jail, been there more than once, sucks, and for what. Maybe the cat would be better off in a shelter, to be adopted by less of a dumbass as rabidbadger.

Little seagull, one issue I have with people here with pets is that many have little money and smoke, drink, use drugs and have lousy jobs if employed at all.
Your concerns over them having money for drugs but not proper pet care is definitely not unfounded.
Many here can barely take care of them selves, let alone a pet whose life they are responsible for.
You probably hate me, but I just like messing with some of these people from time to time. I share your concerns about many of them not being stable, financially able/ responsible for the lives of animals whose lives and well being is in their ( unfortunately) irresponsible hands.
Unlike many of them money isn't the issue, but I have the sense and decency to know that I would at this point in my life not make a good pet owner.
Can you honestly say that an individual whose idea to help his cat is to give it 150mg of ketamine, should even have a pet gold fish?

So many sick people on this planet that let animals die, or just keep them in pain, if someone can't afford to take their pet to a vet when needed they shouldn't have pets, wouldn't surprise me if the people not getting medical treatment for there pet can still afford their favourite drugs though eh, their cat laying there in pain while they get high makes me so angry and upset, I'll be thinking of this persons cat now and its infected wound, I'll worry about it and its not even my cat I just feel so much compassion for cats

You live in another world. I live in a third world country where there are cats everywhere and most people cant afford to take them to the vet. I have 4 cats living with me and theyre all here because they were abandoned. I have dogs and its the exact same situation, their owners abandoned them so now they live with me. Theyre for the most part healthy and happy. I cant afford to get them all flea tablets and take them to the vet every time they get sick though, thats another thing. I had one dog that died and he died in the vet clinic, after 5 days of treatment there. I had to negotiate with them to bring the price down. I appretiate the love and compassion people on this thread have but also calls for a reality check. This is life. There are cats suffering and dying everywhere. Just like dogs. I love animals just as much as you do. But Im not the best caretaker for them. I didnt choose to have animals, I never would have chose it because its too difficult but they been put in my hands cuz they had nowhere else to go. I know I got love for them, this has been made obvious, there was a time when this neighbourhood was overrun by gangs of crackheads and they were trying to break in here while I was alone. I wanted to barricade myself inside a concrete room with bars. But I realized I couldnt cuz the dogs wouldnt come in there with me, so I had to face the fear of dying and say fuck it, we'll all die together. Still, if it was just the cats I wouldnt have done this but thats mainly cuz they wouldnt die defending the place, but dogs would. With difficult life experiences comes wisdom, you understand how people are not always capable of providing all the conditions for the well being of animals. Like parents with their kids. Its hard.

Hes drinking milk and eating, hes back from his journey. Hes still walking very wobbly but hes not falling over at all. Hes made it through this part of the struggle, but he smells really infected. Hes gonna need a lot of help to make it through this.

After reading Op's last comment this really hit me hard. I agree, thanks for doing your best. Life is fucking hard. As a parent, a son, a cat, a dog, a Palestinian or a Israeli, life is hard.

@rapidbadger Despite the difficulty we must b proactive and take responsibility for our self and the creatures that we bring into our lives. Tend to that wound on your toe so you don't end up in a sticky situation like your feline friend. If you can buy K, you can take better care of the cat.

Im glad the poor kitty is ok. Sorry i was harsh on you earlier i didnt know the full story. Get your cat some antibiotics though

The fact that you live in a third world country, does change things a lot. Gangs of crack heads, some where in South or Central America? Not Venezuela, not trying to be funny but all the stray dogs and cats have been eaten, seriously. It is nice to see that you care, sorry about earlier, now I feel bad, about the situation, I just don't want to see someone throw their life into jeopardy over a cat. But I doubt any vet there would care, and no animal protection groups to worry about. Is Ketamine easy to get there and what about oxycodone?
To the mods I am not sourcing, just curious

That's really sad and upsetting, the cats better with you than on the street then, breaks my heart to think of any cats going through that, even when I hear of hurricanes in other countries and freezing temperatures I worry about the stray cats, I'm not sure why I love cats more than a normal person should and worry about them so much, I've loved cats as long as I can remember

Sorry about your situation and I'm glad you're trying your best with them, but if you can afford even a corse of antibiotics it would help him out as you can afford Ketamine so instead buy your cat his meds, I hope he pulls through
 
You better not be my aunt, the one who will spend ridiculous amounts of money on strays and unwanted/defective cats on vet bills to help them

I'll tell you this much if I was anywhere near the bloke with this cat who has the infection I'd be taking it to the vet for him that's for sure

I want to go to Istanbul because they have loads of stray cats the people there love them, they feed them and look after them, all the cats there are like community cats, but yeah if I saw cats in need if I ever went on holiday again, which won't anytime soon as I cant leave my own cat for a night let alone a week, bit if I did I'd end up with no money left feom getting them adopted or treated and a few extra cats in my carry on lol

Oh yeah I to ibiza about 18 years ago, fed the stray cats every night lol

Ive read that about Turkey i wouldnt mind moving there except with my luck id probably end up like that guy in midnight express lol
 
I can safely say the cat is gonna be ok. Hes been to the vet and had the wound cleaned. He survived the ketamine, only to be anaesthatised again the next day, but hes gonna be alright. I took a big dose of ketamine myself today to see things from a delocalised perspective. The lesson I learned from this is to be really careful dosing cats with ketamine. It feels good how I handled it, sitting with him the whole time until he came through it and could walk again. I smell of his infection somehow, and also his piss from when he pissed on me on the way to the vet, so I went through it with him in some way.

Hes gonna need time to recover, this was possibly traumatic for him. He was catatonic for a few hours. But alls well now. Hes back to his normal self.
 
From what I remember, cats can withstand a hell of a lot more in terms of mg/kg.

They shoot Tigers/Lions with k-darts from helicopters and they have to hit them with ridiculous doses to tranq them.

You can't compare human mg/kg to cat mg/kg. Not the same thing.

Having said all that, 150mg is obviously way too much because domestic cats rarely weigh more than 5kg.

I don't approve of medicating cats with ketamine but I don't approve of medicating (self or otherwise) humans with lots of drugs people use around here either.

If you're going to do this again, next time start much fucking lower... and do a bit of research so you know what a sensible dose is.

Tigers seem to be around 2mg-10mg/kg... but (from a brief Google search) it appears to typically be on the lower end.

So - for a 5kg cat - that's maybe 20mg for an anaesthetic dose.

For a 220kg tiger, it is approaching a gram.

EDIT: It seems I might be wrong about cat doses and human doses not being comparable.

This made me cry, I'm so pleased, well done to you and Mr Ginge, what's his real name? He's lovely, I'm glad he's not in pain, my cat had a bite would from another cat once, he kept licking it and he was depressed and you could see he wasn't himself he'd not eat not even his treats so I knew he needed the vet, I don't know what they gave him, it was a painkiller and antibiotic, maybe morphine as he was off his face for hours, I was a bit jealous lol

Give Mr Ginge a kiss and cuddle from me
