Possibly the best answer I've seen to question should my country show open support for Israel, is that Israel & Palestine didn't intervene or took sides when my country was in the war so why would we. It's like when dogs get in the fight, just leave them settle it their way as otherwise you'll probably get bitten. Plus they learn more that way.

What is it about otherwise fairly rational human beings that makes them turn into absolute fuckwits when someone challenges their beliefs?

Answer: Ignorance.

It's easy to disguise this as 'politics', but politics is borne of religion. The old "my sky fairy is better than your sky fairy" argument quickly distills down to "I'm better than you because I believe an opposing load of shite and you're a cunt anyway", which divides people and causes conflict.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame it all on religion. Yes, irrational religious people play a major role in perpetuating the conflict, but in many cases they have been irrelevant. actually, some of the fiercest confrontations of the conflict, those between the PLO and the Israeli state involved two opposing but staunchly secular forces, Both of whom had cracked down on more religious members of their own communities. Ethnonationalism, imperialism and world politics plays a much greater role in the Israel Palestine conflict than any disagreements between Jews and Muslims.
 
although many might feel uncomfortable discussing this, I do think that the establishment of the state of Israel and especially it’s rapid expansion was undoubtedly A violent process in which millions of Palestinians were displaced. furthermore, illegal settlement expansion supported by the Israeli government, combined with unrealistic demands made by some Palestinian factions work hand-in-hand to destabilise any peace process and perpetuating the conflict. as a Muslim strongly sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, I also understand and am strongly sympathetic to The Israelis who wish for peace and a two state solution, or any solution, which brings peace to both parties for that matter. despite the mass displacement, Suffering and discrimination they have been through, I believe most Palestinians are in favour of a two state solution. i’ve read foreign policy articles that argued a two state solution is out of the picture and now unrealistic. however, I guess the only reason this is the case is because people in power benefit greatly from a continuation of conflict.
 
So apparently Israel's new Minister of National Security has previously been charged with hate speech and used to have a portrait of a Jewish extremist who massacred 29 Muslims in a mass shooting

He is a leader of the Jewish Power party (literal translation), and is widely known for being openly racist & provocateur

Over 200,000 people protested every weekend in Tel Aviv to remove him from power

These last couple of pages are madness.
If your own country is at war with countries right beside it, then ofcourse people cheer their own country. If not they're getting blown to bits. I would cheer for my own country too.

Yea Ben Gvir is an absolute gem. He's not the only one with that sort of record in the Israeli government either. And people question Israel's actions with people like this in their government, its wild. People just throw on the blinders

The human shield thing is being over exaggerated to excuse the mass murder of civilian women and children.
Obviously hamas are amongst the population but what’s happening now is Israel Defending itself. They are going to cleanse the area completely.
And they wil make sure Civilians that aren’t killed have no homes to return to.
