Mass Shooting and Gun Control Megathread

Alright, fair point, it's an example of propaganda being pushed out there.

Of course, personal sales should also have the same restrictions, but I don't see how that could be enforced.

The whole "gun show loophole" thing is funny to me
When I lived in Houston 40 years ago the Houston Astrodome would have gun shows several times a year. At that time I was dating a girl who was in the ballerina but who's father participated in the gun show. One day we were suppose to go out on a date so she tells me she is helping her dads table a the gun show and if I can come and pick her up there. So I park, walk into the Astrodome and as I look up there were tables and guns as far as I can see in this huge arena. There is my new girlfriend sitting behind about 100 of her father's guns, behind another 1000 tables of guns. Yeah that made me nervous. Needless to say that relationship fizzled out. I did however have a friend living in Houston who was from NY that was amazed how you can just buy guns. He walked into the gun show with cash and came out with guns.

Experts on NPR say:
Raise AR legal age to 21
Universal background checks
Increased gun storage and safety at home

But don't tell conservatives they'll throw a hissy fit (?)

You can buy an assault rifle at 18 but can't drink until 21.... Drinking age is because 18 year olds don't make the best decisions

So stupid
But you can send an 18 year old to war ???? An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle. And these nut jobs are not all stupid. There is a definite pattern of attacking "soft" targets ... like an elementary school with no armed security !!!

Then the problem is with the laws currently in place NOT being enforced. no sense making new laws when the ones already in the books are not being enforced.

I love school shootings because they are the clearest reflection available that something is seriously wrong with our model of society, for both the actual event itself and the subsequent discussion by the media afterwards.

We don't have (many) guns in the UK but that doesn't stop children stabbing each other all the time. Whilst we have no school shootings, the individuals who may have done such a thing instead implode in silence and out of sight, causing suffering to themselves and others in different ways. The underlying problem is still there, it just manifests differently. Lives might not end instantly in such brutality, the suffering may be more diffuse, but it is still there.

The media just loves talking about guns and demonising the child as 'evil', overlooking the fact that society made both of them. But no. Blame guns. Blame video games. Blame the child who was betrayed by those who should have helped. Ironically, taking away guns and violent video games would solve nothing, all it would do is satisfy the desires of dull people to not have the faults of society impact their lives and allow them to go on pretending nothing is wrong. Basically they want 'out of sight, out of mind', don't interrupt my trip.. and the government would also get to neuter the public of weaponry that could be used to resist tyranny.

Discussion should be on why the child was failed, on causative factors that need addressing e.g. legal and illegal mind affecting substances.

An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle.
I'm aware of that... You can still get automatic weapons in this country and if its a joke if you think it's difficult. It's incredibly easy to make a bump stock or other modifications to create an assault rifle as well.

Just look at the 2017 Las Vegas shooting... he has an arsenal of automatic weapons.

There is a definite pattern of attacking "soft" targets ... like an elementary school with no armed security !!!
Yep...

Please excuse my ignorance, but I was under the impression that 'AR' was an acronym for 'Assault Rifle', or 'Automatic Rifle'. Is this not the case?

Also, I totally agree that the schools are at fault here for not having sufficiently armed security, teachers and fuckin pupils. Give 'em more guns, that's the answer.

Serves em right eh?

its a common misconception because they LOOK the same

AR stands for ArmaLite

an assault rifle is basically any rifle that fires fully automatic or burst

an AR-15 can be converted into an assault rifle, but a standard AR-15 only fires semi automatic

Yep...
Wide Open Trigger…merica muthafucka

I don't even know what that means.

But I'm guessing it's not good?
it's basically a very simple device you can add to the gun that causes it to vibrate/reverberate in a way that turns it fully autmoatic

NOT good because it's so incredibly cheap and easy to make, and because it's not technically a modification to the actual mechanism of the gun it is legal in some states and skirts gun laws
