Blue Collar {1978}: Oh man, this was a great movie, can't believe I never saw it until now – it made my "top X" list right away.

Written & directed by Paul Schrader (who wrote Taxi Driver), starring Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto as three Detroit auto worker friends who pull a heist on their corrupt union local and get pulled apart to three very different fates. Starts off somewhat comedic but turns very dark, indeed.



In the timeless words of Smokey James (Yaphet Kotto): "They pit the lifers against the new boys, the young against the old, the black against the white. Everything they do is to keep us in our place."

One of my favorite crime/action movies of all time. I'm very fond of them and have watched both 3 times. Filmed where I grew up on the Mexican border where I used to score from cartel connected guys, nostalgic for me. AMAZING cast, hyper realistic plot and action (relatively for a movie). Great cinematography. Great soundtrack, haunting! Memorable characters.

Who doesn't love Benicio and Hamlin??

I liked Benicio del Toro's character in those films...didn't care much for the films overall, but he was good in that role and I liked his character

My third WKW film, behind Fallen Angels and Chungking Express.

I think I need to sit on this one a bit before rating. Let in marinate.

Wondering if I should have watched Days of Being Wild first?
 
Murder on the Orient Express ( 2018 )

I enjoyed the film until it became utterly unbelievable. It's badly written, but well directed. Every single passenger on the train is connected to the murder victim? Give me a fucking break.

Agatha Christie is a hack.

EDIT: I just got to the end of the film and the murderer was: all of them.
This has got to be the stupidest most convoluted plot I've ever witnessed.

I am - weirdly - looking forward to the next one.

Lucy (2014)

A really, really crappy mish-mash of Limitless, 2001: A Space Odyssey, various sci-fi tv-show episodes in the 90s, and Akira. Brought to you by the once great, now not so great, Luc Besson. Like all his films , you get a massive gunfight that defies logic and reason near the end, only you don't enjoy it and it's shit even compared to his early 90s stuff. ScarJo should be ashamed she put her name on this...

With a 90 minute runtime, I felt like I was watching a 150 minute film. The pacing was awful. Give it a hard pass, I barely wanted to finish.

Both are amazing! Did you watch the show Ratched, too? It's also really good, but I'd say only VERY loosely connected (as far as I remember literally only connection is Sarah Paulson playing the titular nurse, as a sort-of prequel...but I LIKE her character in the show, whereas I think we all agree she was a cunt in the book).

Btw, it's been bugging me ever since: wasn't she Nurse Ratchet (with a T) in the book?

I figured out why I felt like this; Luc Besson's own opinion being quoted here... dude, c'mon!!!

Luc Besson once called this film as "one part Léon: The Professional (1994), one part Inception (2010) and one part 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)". Many shots in the film were mirrored after these three films.

So like... he gave up. Forget even copying his own material over again, let's copy directors who far out do any of his works! That's a winning recipe!
 
Blue Collar ( 1978 )

This film wouldn't be made today in Hollywood. It's unpredictable and weird.

Early on in the film, all three main characters (two of whom are fathers) spend "five weeks of pay" on a bunch of drugs. They lie to their families and skip out in the middle of the night so they can get fucked up and have sex with women who are no their wives. These are our heroes.

Richard Pryor's character pretends to have six children - when he only has three - so he can scam the welfare program.

There are no good people in this movie.

Harvey Keitel and Richard Pryor are bad actors (Keitel's portrayal of Jesus in Last Temptation is perhaps the most cringe-worthy thing I've ever seen) but I don't care about that. I'd much have bad actors and a non-predictable story, rather than a good cast and cookie cutter storytelling.

I don't agree with the politics in the movie. Pryor's character doesn't need to steal. He doesn't need to pretend to have six kids. He should spend less money on beer and drugs.
 
Reign of Fire (2002)

A (to be) star studded cast heads this entertaining fresh take on a post-apocalyptic world; Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, and Matthew McConaughey play the lead characters. The year is 2020, the world has been fried to a crisp by the return of dragons, apparently they come in cycles and they wiped out the dinosaurs. Sounds cheesy right? But it wasn't!

I poured myself a stiff drink, and became so engrossed in this movie. The world building is minimal but effective. The acting was good, the plot holes not so noticeable, and the pacing perfect. In the actual 2020s, the names of any of these actors would draw huge crowds, but in 2002 I guess not so much lol.

Worthy of revisiting IMO.

Scream (2022) - 3.5 Stabbings - I will state that, to be fair, I am NOT a fan of this franchise (with the exception of the opening scene of the original with Drew Barrymore which was ICONIC), so may 3.5/5 might be more like a 4 or even 4.5 for fans. I did watch it in like three separate chucks as it was boring at times, but I do like how literally anyone can be the killer in these films. Even when the killer(s) is/are someone really obvious, it's still NOT obvious. I didn't really care who died, inc. OG characters, but it was decent enough for a run-of-the-mill slasher.
None of these movies are scary in any way whatsoever (I am aware they are at least part black-comedy), but I'm sure they're scaryer if you haven't seen Scary Movie (2000).

Serial Mom (1994) - 4 Pussywillows - Seen this John Waters classic a few times now and like the uniqueness of a slasher where you root for the killer and it's more comedy than horror and just FUN. Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) and Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989) are the only two others that I can really think of.
Beverley is just you normal, average, every day stay-at-home mom and housewife who just...happens to be a serial killer.

The Bay (2012) - 4 Stars - fun eco/body/parasitefound footage horror!
 
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

Decent enough sequel to the original (wtf is this trend of doing this) but by being so 'modern' it loses itself I thought and became just another slasher film. Although the action scenes were short but quite good, there's a certain bus scene that was freaking class I thought. Also there's something like 3 timelines at the moment. Crazy like.

If Netflix can do this then hurry up with a Nightmare on Elm Street!
