Hi and welcome to Bluelight!
I'm a recovering alcoholic too and I have tried ALL the medications that are supposed to help you stop drinking. The only one that truly helps me stay completely sober is called Antabuse. It's one tablet a day, and if you drink ANY alcohol while you're taking it, it makes you VIOLENTLY SICK. So it works very well for me because I don't want to ever get that sick.
Maybe mention it to your doctor.
You have to be absolutely 100% committed to not drinking though.

Hey, just wondering what kind of side effects you had, if any? How long did you take it for?
Side effects whilst taking it and remaining sober? None at all. It seems to be largely very well tolerated. You have to get your liver function tested regularly while you're on it though, especially if you've got alcohol related liver damage.

I've been taking Antabuse on and off for about 6 years. Currently not on it cos I'm pregnant but super keen to start back on it ASAP once I give birth.

That's awesome! I'm very interested now.

I once asked a doc for the nicotine version Chantix, he scoffed and refuse to prescribe it citing severe side effects

Ooh yeah I've heard the Champix side effects are horrible!! I've never taken it though. Here in Aus doctors tend to prescribe Wellbutrin for nicotine cessation, over Champix. Weird huh.

Oh i am sorry to read this. I am an alcoholic, and i know it can be hell. Because it is hell. If the "1981" part in your username is a reference to your birth year then well, i was born the same year. I have been an alcoholic for 25 years. The magic trick which has kept me alive, is poverty. I would have drank myself to the fucking grave 2 decades ago, if i had enough money. However, there are some other tricks too. You asked about medicine. Let's approach this from that stance then, but there are other things too. Like therapy and meditation and breathing exercises and stuff.

-Naltrexone

This works for some. This has worked for some people i personally know. It was supposed to diminish the reward, the pleasure i get from alcohol. But uhhh... i kinda just drank more, yet without experiencing the mental pain-numbing effects so... i quit this medicine after a month or so of using.

-Benzodiazepines

First things first: Benzos are highly addictive and if you drink while you take benzos then it is a major clusterfuck event. In the best case scenario, you pass out and remember nothing afterwards. In the worst case scenario, even sky is not the limit, any, and i mean ANY horrible incident is possible to occur. However, if you are going through serious alcohol withdrawals, and the withdrawal symptoms feel unbearable, a short term benzodiazepine use could benefit you, but i emphasize that you need to be super responsible with these pills. Take as doctor ordered, NEVER ever never with alcohol.

-Antabuse

This shit works. You really don't wanna drink when you are on antabuse medication. Or actually you might have cravings... bad cravings... But if you drink, you are fucked. So sick that all sickness pales in comparison. Take my word for it, as someone who has drank on antabuse once. This is extreme stuff. But it will give you some time off from alcohol. It solves the symptom. But it does not solve the underlying root cause(s) of drinking which need to be addressed.

I know it is hard. But i see that you recognize the problem, which is crucial in success, if the goal is sobriety. I wish strength to you.
