Sleep
Eyes blinded by silk darkness as days disappear like pennies
Drowsy at a bus-stop and I feel like I could sleep for a decade
Sleep under sateen weave as the faces I know will change,
and the people I know will change,
along with their stories
As pandemics, school-shootings, binary genders,
amygdala hijacks and the sex-tapes of celebrities continue to cause alarm,
let me sleep
As the stucco-paint peel off houses in Palm Springs
and bricks in Oslo crumble to dust as mortar again become paste,
let me sleep
Laying embedded in Egyptian cotton sheets with 1000 thread count,
as the planet softly spins while our narratives upon it unfold
The airplanes will only be held aloft by autopilot-systems
until the tanks dry out and then they will tumble, too-
let me sleep
As schools and hospitals sink into darkness,
and suburb after suburb following city after city plunge into pandemonium
as the gutters spew rivers we set sail on
Through blackouts and powerplant failures
as packs of pet-dogs roam the streets
and the iron hand of circumstance
wipes away the last traces of domestication,
let me sleep
And wake up as a stranger to a world irreversibly changed,
where the cattle are spared from the slaughterhouses
only to forage and starve along the highways in a menacing twist of fate
When roads have begun to degrade into gravel and sand and the skiing resorts
are blown off the brambly peaks
When corrosion and rust has chewed the last cars to hollow husks,
and birds of prey hunt rodents in the abandoned malls
next to collapsing skyscrapers,
let me sleep
When our monuments are torn asunder by weather and wind
as the Seine slowly drowns Paris
and the arch of the Golden Gate bridge loses its vigor,
another beast tamed by senescence
When it's violent and still
and if I can't forget,
let me sleep
Eyes blinded by silk darkness as days disappear like pennies
