Covid-19 Outbreak of new SARS-like coronavirus (Covid-19)

Thanks man. :) And likewise, I appreciate your ability to be kind and respectful in the midst of political debate, something very few seem to be able to manage these days.
We have to stay high, and mature. I'm often "cutting" but I try to do it only appropriately, without malice, but passion, for point's sake.

Such bullshit... Where was all of the outrage over leftists rioting and tearing apart cities for the past year from all of these covid experts?

Capitol Hill riot could prove to be COVID-19 superspreader event, experts say

Thousands of unmasked rioters flouted public health guidelines.

ByArielle Mitropoulos

Thousands of unmasked rioters at the nation's Capitol on Wednesday flouted public health guidelines in what experts have said may become a prime example of a coronavirus superspreader event.

Numerous photos and videos showed many shunning face coverings and social distancing, two measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help stop COVID-19.

Public health officials will not know for weeks exactly how many new COVID cases are linked to the Capitol Hill riots, but they say the riots could turn out to be a super spreader event.

"I am very concerned," Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Georgetown Center for Global Health Science and Security, told ABC News. "Rioters were in very close proximity for long periods of time, shouting, and exposed to chemical irritants, leading to coughing. Many of them were unmasked. These are all conditions that are very conducive to [COVID-19] transmission."

This "signature pattern" seen throughout the pandemic has somehow been replayed over and over again, said Dr. John Brownstein, chief innovation officer at Boston Children's Hospital and an ABC News contributor.

"Large gatherings, with people not wearing masks, and especially if there's indoor components, are our biggest risk to spread transmission," he said, adding that potential superspreader events can have lasting effects.

Even CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield warned on Friday that the riots likely were a "surge event" that could have public health consequences across the country.

"I do think you have to anticipate that this is another surge event. You had largely unmasked individuals in a non-distanced fashion, who were all through the Capitol," Redfield told McClatchy in an interview.

Scientists and health officials have repeatedly urged caution around mass gatherings, warning coronavirus transmission is heightened indoors, exacerbated by crowds.

"This could be the superspreader event to end all superspreader events, not to mention the fact that we are now in the worst point of this pandemic," Brownstein added.

In the first week of 2021, U.S. states and territories have reported more coronavirus cases and deaths than at any point in the pandemic, and health officials have warned that the crisis will only get worse in the coming months as the effects of increased travel and holiday gatherings are felt.

Thursday's 4,085 COVID-19-related deaths over the previous 24 hours set a new record -- the third straight record day in the U.S., according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University. With a seven-day average of 2,934 deaths by Friday, at least 368,367 Americans -- about 1 in 900 -- have died from the virus.

Many of the rioters travelled from different parts of the country and stayed in hotels. Ashli E. Babbitt, who was shot and killed inside the Capitol, was from San Diego, while three other attendees who lost their lives were from Pennsylvania, Alabama and Georgia.

"This is a huge problem, since transmission is already out of control throughout the U.S.," Rasmussen said. "It's extremely likely that multiple rioters brought COVID with them to the Capitol and spread it to others, who in turn will bring it back to their communities. Travel to and from different communities will no doubt increase opportunities for further spread. For those traveling back to communities where health care systems are already at capacity, this could be disastrous. This is exactly the opposite of what anyone should be doing right now."

Communities that may have had the pandemic relatively under control may see a resurgence when rioters return home, Brownstein explained, adding that given the discovery of the new U.K. COVID-19 variant in several states, the fallout of Wednesday's events also may accelerate the rise of this new variant.

Republican State Rep. Mike Caruso of Florida told ABC News he is concerned about people returning from the D.C. riot and spreading the virus.

"I would ask them to quarantine when they do come back and to go get tested," Caruso said, adding that "before anyone flies, they should be tested."

"It's extraordinary and negligent that rioters were not arrested and detained at the event, as this would have been an opportunity to contain new cases and prevent the spread to other communities," Rasmussen added. "It was a huge failure of law enforcement to allow the perpetrators of a violent attempted coup to continue to be a major threat to public safety as well as public health."

The mismanagement and unpreparedness of the police response led to calls by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to fire those entrusted to protect Congress. She called the department's response "a failure of leadership." Steven Sund, head of the U.S. Capitol police, Michael Stenger, the Senate sergeant-at-arms, and Paul Irving, the House sergeant-at-arms, all resigned.

Experts also said they are worried about COVID-19 spreading to lawmakers or their staff, many of whom were barricaded in close proximity as the mob churned outside their office doors.

Rep. Susan Wild, D-Pa., told CBS News she noticed that while she and 300 to 400 people were sequestered in a secure location, many refused to wear masks.

"It's what I would call a COVID superspreader event," Wild added. "About half of the people in the room are not wearing masks. Even though they've been offered surgical masks, they've refused to wear them."

Rasmussen called the reports of unmasked legislators "unconscionable" for "anyone who purports to be in a leadership position," particularly given how newly elected Louisiana Rep. Luke Letlow died last month of COVID-19 at the age of 41.

"I fully expect new cases to result among members of Congress and their staffers," she added.

Jake LaTurner, a freshman congressman from Kansas who attended Wednesday's vote to certify the election, announced on Thursday that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

"Anyone who spent 15 or more minutes within 6 feet of Rep. LaTurner should consider themselves as a potential exposure, and should therefore quarantine for 10 days," said Andrew Noymer, a professor of public health at University of California, Irvine. "In some ways, the whole US of A is one giant superspreader event at the moment."

I think that taking a COVID angle on this event is missing the fucking point. The reason this is different from the BLM protests is because instead of being about reforming militarized and overly violent police culture, it was about insurrection, forcefully overturning the results of an election, undermining our democratic system (and they call themselves patriots, give me a break, the founding fathers have to be rolling over in their graves) for the sake of a demagogue who has them all under his spell. Wake up, the election wasn't stolen, every election official is standing by their results, dozens of court battles were lost, there is no proof, the only proof is Trump saying over and over again that the election was stolen. All but 6 republican senators have realized that they went too far in trying to please their Trump-loving base after this event. You guys were played by a narcissist, and that narcissist has so effectively convinced his followers that the election was stolen that no amount of reason or lack of evidence or evidence to the contrary will convince them they got duped. And he has incited a mob to literally break into the capitol building to disrupt the lawful democratic process. Again, wake up. Look at what is happening. We have a bunch of people organizing on Parler to march on DC to prevent the inauguration of the elected president that the majority of people voted for. Can you IMAGINE if the other side was doing this? How loudly you guys would be screaming? This is how democracies die, right here.

That is the difference. Some BLM protests got out of hand (some of them because police or right wing groups instigated violence which kicked off mob violence, as happens with mobs - and yes I realize not all of them were, huge groups of people are a scary thing, and there are always opportunists who decide to use the anonymity of a mob to do terrible things), and some of the stuff that has happened during them has been awful. of course the media doesn't report on all the protests that have been peaceful and had no issues. Either way, the reason for the protests is just. The reason for this is that a bunch of brainwashed delusional people pretending to be patriotic are being manipulated into destroying this country and installing a Supreme Leader.

That's where the outrage comes from. It's scary shit what's happening right now. A bunch of Americans, most of whom, I'm sure, mean well and think they're doing the right thing, could easily destroy us.

Trump is the biggest traitor of a president this country has ever seen, no other president has done a fraction of what he has done to try to undermine the democratic process. And yet we have people shouting from the rooftops that he is the greatest president THE WORLD has EVER SEEN. Be real for a minute, and study other authoritarian regimes throughout history. Notice how many parallels there are. Consider that Trump's advisors such as Roger Stone have made a career, literally, of installing dictators in less first-world nations. This is what that looks like. This is a turning point for America right now.

But yeah the COVID angle that article took was asanine.

New York expands its COVID-19 vaccine pool by 3.2 million people after a lack of eligible candidates forced healthcare workers to toss spare doses

New York will now offer COVID-19 vaccines to a wider group ofresidents after the state's previously strict eligibility guidelines meant medical providers were forced to throw out unused doses.

The state announced new guidelines on Friday and Saturday that expanded the eligible pool to more older residents and workers deemed essential, as well as more healthcare staff. In total, 3.2 million more people are now able to get a shot.

On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the vaccine would be offered to a bigger group of workers including teachers, public-transit workers, and first responders such as police officers and fire-service employees.

The next day, state health authorities issued guidance saying employees at medical center who interact with the public, including pharmacy clerks, cashiers, stock workers, and delivery staff members, could also get the shot — but only if there are extra doses in a vial and if no higher-priority residents would be able to get to the center before the doses expire.

"This exception is ONLY for the purpose of ensuring vaccine is not wasted," the state's health department said.

This followed the news that medical providers had to dispose of COVID-19 vaccine doses because they couldn't find eligible candidates to give the shots to.

Dr. Neil Calman, the president of the Institute for Family Health, told The New York Times that the Family Health Center of Harlem had to throw away doses after patients didn't show up to their appointments. The city's health department had said the clinic could give the shots only to eligible groups.

State authorities have investigated healthcare providers who may have violated its vaccination plans. This includes the ParCare Community Health Network in New York City, which authorities say may have ignored the state's vaccine-prioritization guidelines.

Despite the previously strict criteria, hospitals in the state face a $100,000 fine if they don't use their COVID-19 vaccine doses quickly enough. Cuomo announced the policy on January 4, adding that some of the state's hospitals had used less than a fifth of their doses.

YAY! NY opens up to more people being allowed to get the vaccine.

BOO! Its because they were too strict and some hospitals had only used 20% of their allotted doses (by meeting the criteria) and would be fined if they weren't used...so they were throwing them away?!?!?!!?! WTF kind of leadership and planning is that?

The future is here kids...

@nuttynutskin
Does that mean that kids have to get the covid vaccine?

Yes, unless they have a medical condition that prevents them. I'm not even quite sure that that means tbh.

But yeah, the vaccine won't be mandatory, you just won't be able to exist as part of society unless you've gotten it.

Scary shit imho, the way things are going.

Does that mean that kids have to get the covid vaccine?
No it doesn’t. The COVID vaccine hasn’t even been tested on kids.
Here’s the actual Senate Bill. It’s about whether or not kids can attend school events if they’re not vaccinated against things like mumps and measles. And the answer is no they can’t unless a physician stated there’s a reason they shouldn’t be vaccinated.

Great news! Removes at least one way that kids can be put in danger by the misinformed ignorance of their parents. Not to mention, obviously, the danger posed to society at large by every person who isn't vaccinated against transmissible disease.

Define society at large, if say the majority of people are vaccinated against transmissible disease then they are vaccine protected and they are by definition "society at large" therefore there is no danger posed to "society at large" from that disease. Whether a disease is transmitted by vaccinated or un-vaccinated individuals or by donkeys or sheep or even liberals in not relevant.
Obviously.

Statist authoritarian utilitarianism has such inconsistencies it is hard to take the logic seriously.
It is a pseudo-religion complete with dogma, zealots, believers, priests, heretics and apostates.
It should be remembered that it is directky responsible for more unnecessary death and suffering over the history of mankind than all the invisible sky friend religions put together. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

This has nothing to do with coronavirus, there are no licenced approved vaccines for COVID zero, none, therefore any COVID vaccine mandate is automatically unlawful under the internationally accepted Nurenberg rules.

No vaccine is 100% effective. Every unvaccinated person who has any interaction with any other human being is a potential transmission vector for a preventable disease.

There is no vaccine for stupid.
Can't disagree with you there.

Once again see exactly how much scrutiny is being applied to what people wanna believe they're hearing. Which is to say, none.

this is bollocks and you know it. comparing stalinism to vaccine mandates is so disingenuous its almost untrue. its also fucking offensive to people such as myself who lost entire generations of their ancestors under such regimes, but probably had ancestors saved due to vaccines (in fact my grandmother would likely have survived past 51 if she'd had the vaccines we have available today).

you seem not to care about the children of these parents at all, what about this guy or and these children (and yes i know some of them were vaccinated, that isn't the point)- do they not have the right to be free from suffering and potential death due to preventable disease? why should parents be allowed to neglect their children in this way just because they are ignorant or scared due to made up bullshit by people like del bigtree and larry cook?

No vaccine is 100% (at what doing what exactly?)

By your logic it follows that every vaccinated person who has any interaction with any other human being is a potential transmission vector for a preventable disease. There are many more vaccinated people than unvaccinated people so the number of transmission interactions involving infected vaccineees as vectors massively outnumber those that are unvaccinated.

You have clearly thought deeply about this.

where was Stalinism mentioned?

The concept is that medical interventions require consent, freely given not coerced. Medical interventions should have a clear benefit for the recipient, any other benefits including dogmatic utilitarian pan-societal justifications put forward by vastness and others are moot.

The state doesn't always know best, Hate to break this to you, governments simply don't care about you or the rest of their population. The deference to the so called wisdom of the state, is statism pure and simple.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions and metalled by people not listening or thinking.

LOL. Are you high? I'm not even gonna bother with that. Try to think about this a little harder.
haha,
now, if I was to post the conclusion I actually arrived at about the logic of your positiion, and the clear understanding or lack of then you would throw a temper tantrum and stomp around in a hissy fit.

ha that was my misreading 'statism' and not bothering to read again because your right wing bias is so obvious that it didn't seem remotely surprising.

the state should listen to experts when forming its policy. in this case the medical establishment, who are overwhelmingly pro-vax. i am actually pro small government in most cases, just not when vulnerable people might die without intervention, such as children or people who cannot be vaccinated so rely on herd immunity.

medical interventions do not require consent- i did not consent in any way whatsoever when my elbow was reconstructed. nor did i consent when i was hospitalised in a psychiatric facility for anorexia.

BUT- even if i take your position regarding consent, this is children. they don't get the option to consent. they are not considered to be capable of such under law so consent is given by their parents. this results in anti-vax parents children suffering or dying needlessly due to their parents decisions.

vaccinations have a clear benefit to the recepient so i don't see how that's relevant.
