Social Justice Transgender and gender identity discussion

you're conflating two different issues.

i only mentioned the robert/bob thing as an example of how calling somebody by their preferred pronoun should be no more challenging than calling somebody by their preferred name.

alasdair

So u call them he first and if they ask u to call them something else u do that?
just what I said.

Anyone else find it a little strange that we appear to have two, active, simultaneous threads about transgender shit... But seemingly no openly transgender members?

We have a decent supply of transgender supporters/lovers and a balancing hodge podge of haters and ignoramuses so I’d be celebrating our viewpoint diversity.

I responded to a similar comment almost exactly one year ago. My opinion hasn't changed:

I completely disagree.

I think you are confusing concern with relevance. Do you remember just 10 years ago how noone even said the word "transgender?" Most people ignorantly called it transsexual.

Just because transgenders are getting the attention they deserve doesn't mean everyone else is left out in the dust.

You sound jealous.

What tha fuck?

How is

A remotely similar comment to

The poorly kept secret is that the Left only cares about the T in LGBT...the far-left is just as out of touch and dangerous to the as the extreme far-right.

I can only assume that you've assumed something about what I was saying that wasn't the case.

OK well, I never meant to imply that I thought giving the subject attention means leaving anyone else out.

Actually, I mainly meant my comment just as an observation for people to think about, but the thinking I had behind it, to the extent that I had one, was that it kinda feels like a lot of people here, mainly the ones opposed to and complaining about transgender issues, sure seem to complain very loudly about something that doesn't really affect them at all.

Basically people who will complain all over the place about transgender politics in spite of having no stake or involvement in the subject whatsoever.

Hence highlighting how odd it is that transgender politics is one of the most visible subjects in ceps, in spite of there being seemingly no transgender people.

That was my thinking.

One of my first BL friends (wish I could keep up with them all) was an openly trans person here on the forums. I'm sure our viewpoints are giving us different pieces of information.

I always assumed "they" was a generic pronoun that could apply to anyone at any time. Like i could say "Elliot is working on a new movie and he is really excited about it." or, "Elliot Page is an actor who has played many roles. One of their first roles was Trinity in Trailer Park Boys."
Dunno how I missed this one i.e. was just going through this thread for want of something better to do and trying to make sense of it all.

And this is a first given that we're never in agreement on anything you and I.

But that's my understanding and how I was taught (to speak English).

Are we all now supposed to start speaking English differently because Arthur (or Elliot) woke up this morning and decided they now want to be Martha (or Ellen) or visa versa or both or somewhere in-between?

And when does it stop as a matter of interest? Would have been nice to be able to think that when they reached 26 letters (of the alphabet) that would be the end but I see we're already repeating letters i.e. "LGBTTTQQIAA" so there goes that!

And as for the first post on this thread (which obviously was the catalyst for this thread and led to this point in the thread): Caster Semenya is one of our athletes. And let me tell you: her (or whatever) competing against other professional female athletes is, well, unfair at best (being real nice here and has nothing to do with race either) (hard as that may be to believe coming from me). Mike Tyson would think thrice before getting into a ring with her!

Mind you. I'm not sure which is worse i.e. the above or the fact that Breakdancing will be recognized as an Olympic sport in 2024. Then again: right up there with Synchronized Swimming I guess! 🤣

I cannot wait to wake up from this. Reagan is still POTUS. Disco and hair metal are alive and well. The currency is still at or around parity with the USD. Cocaine is almost dangerously pure. There's a 99.9% chance that something with tits is what it says it is on the tin. 🤣

Either the above or it's enough now with the simulation Elon. Turn it off. It's not fun anymore!

You know how many times I think I've said the word "she" or "her" in the context of now Elliott Page in my entire life?

Maaaaaaaybe a half dozen or so? Around the time inception came out? Maaaaybe?

I don't think this is a big ask or great imposition. :P

Well I didn't even know who this Elliot/Ellen person WAS until this thread. Doesn't seem as though I missed out on anything special though. Heard of Bruce err... Caitlyn Jenner though (admittedly only because Bill Burr takes the piss out of THEM) (is "THEM" the pronoun I'm now supposed to use?).

Therein lies the problem and in response the "big ask or great imposition" thingy. As long as it doesn't affect me: carry on in your own space and on your own time. But so far as I can tell: here we have some celeb. for whom that's not good enough. And on top of that: probably having an influence on preteen fans who don't know shit from a shovel let alone who or what they want to be yet (and as to whether that should even be a debatable point is something I'll steer clear of). The link below is rather applicable (and then some).

Just remembered: the Berlin Wall is still standing! Think I need to go there in 1989 to get a few pieces of it i.e. I think one could make a bit of money out of selling pieces of history. 🤣

Fuck the preteen fans. Assuming they exist (which I doubt). If they can handle being in the internet 24/7 they can handle this.

Besides, suggesting it's bad for preteens sounds alarmingly similar to the "they shouldn't be taught about sex cause they might then have it!" "logic".

Heard of Bruce err... Caitlyn Jenner though

This is the type of arrogance I really can't stand. Does it really cost you that much just to say Caitlyn Jenner? No. But you chose to misgender her on purpose. Do you find it funny, or get some kind of pleasure out of doing it? Is this what you wanted maybe, a little bit of attentIon on an Internet forum ?

takes the piss out of THEM) (is "THEM" the pronoun I'm now supposed to use?).

yes, they/them/their is pretty universal as I said before. It is not gender specific and thus generally safe to use. That's not very difficult, is it?

There's a 99.9% chance that something with tits is what it says it is on the tin. 🤣

You really take your cis straight male privilege for granted , don't you? Just trot through life grinning and chuckling at those who didn't win the genetic lottery?

Gotta love hoe Elliot Page actually said that both "him" and "they" are fine, presumably assuming that some people would have trouble with "him".

And instead the usual suspect's are acting like that extra option is deliberately making it harder on them.

This really isn't rocket science. This isn't the minefield it's made out to be.

If someone asks you to refer to them as him, be polite, and do it. If you honestly screw it up, say you're sorry.

You know, the basic courtesy and respect.

Oops. Sorry. Then I misread and/or misinterpreted your initial post on the topic.

I take it then that we're NOT in agreement again as usual. That's fine. Consistency is good.
