Different aspects of the response will last different amounts of time.

Im predicting a couple years before things overall approach being back to normal.

More extreme measures will likely end sooner. But some ways this has affected society probably wont ever truly go back to how they were. And in some ways some of it's for the better.

Regardless of anything else though, this can't truly end until either there's a widespread vaccine, or we reach herd immunity.

Or if it's established that the virus really isnt as dangerous as it appears, but im not holding my breath. Lowest estimates are around 0.4% mortality and that's still relatively high.

0.5% mortality at the 60% infected estimated for herd immunity, in a country like the US that's about a million dead.

I assume that I'm now answering someone who is completely OK with putting 3 people in jail for 6 months for going for a walk and having a private conversation.

The obvious result of these draconian measures implemented quickly and for an indefinite period of time is individual psychological breakdown and subsequent societal chaos. Releasing prisoners (along with - for eg - importing mass amounts of young male migrants from wartorn countries into europe) will fuel and accelerate the societal chaos. This is good for an authoritarian government as then even STRICTER laws can be put in place...... for your safety of course. When things get bad and you need help who are you going to turn to?

I know that some people are just unable to entertain this possibility because it's so terrifying and it is actually happening so the cognitive dissonance sets in. But the ones who see through the fog - do not despair! They WILL expose themselves in their, frankly, incredibly sloppy attempt at a totalitarian power grab. It reeks of desperation and urgency. When they try to come out with a mandated vaccine, the plan won't work. The downfall of the psychopath is wishful thinking. Also don't stress too much. Put yourself in as best position as possible to hunker down for a while and enjoy the show.

 
Your problem is you can't entertain anything else.

Literally every single thing that happens is interpreted as evidence of your world view even when they don't fit together into a coherent whole. Cause there is no coherent whole.

Also, since you put nothing up, im gonna assume you have no example of someone going to jail for a party and just pulled it out of your ass.

Suggesting that the max possible sentence is what almost anyone is remotely likely is bullshit. That's not how it works.

And it's not like there haven't been plenty of chances from people breaking the law. Barely anyones been fined let alone jailed.

It'd be a lot better if you had more specifics. Food shortage can mean a lot of things.

It can mean some food is available but not everything. It can mean shortages at some stores but not others.

So far the problem has largely been limited to distribution rather than literally not enough food.

I'm sorry that you live in Australia. My condolences.

There's ample evidence that authoritarian regimes are using this pandemic as an opportunity to seize more power; see Hungary. I agree that's happening.

Weird; my local grocery store is way better stocked this week than it was two weeks ago.

Also there's no legitimate reason for food shortages to occur unless we're talking about imported foods.

Funny this is a rare time where im happy to live in australia apart from for the health care system. Chances are ill be a lot better off here than the US.

I dont think anyones disagreeing that authoritarian regimes are using the crisis to increase their power. They do that in any crisis. The problem is being totally unable to see the difference between a government asking you to stay home, and disappearing you for criticizing them.

Yes or no - is that what the police are threatening to do to people as we speak?

Here's some logic. Pascal's wager.

You can freak out about coronavirus or about a burgeoning police state.
If you're wrong about the first, you'll suffer the complete loss of your liberty. If you're wrong about the second, you'll only suffer the effects of a bad flu season.



This guy understands what's going on. That's why he's almost in tears in parliament. It's fucking serious and it's scary (the government overreach not the virus). It really is insane when viewed in context but they can only get away with it because the majority of people are so clueless.

Im not gonna defend australia's gun laws, i don't really agree with them either

But id still rather be here right now.

I've been warning of food shortages for well over a year. They're climate-related. Nothing to do with the virus. But they will be blamed on the virus! Oh the convenience... I've literally been following the global movement of food and the moves governments have been making. It could be 1-2 years but there will probably be a global famine. So you either grow your own food or you starve. Or you better hope you're rich enough to afford meat grown in a lab or cockroach milk.

Yes or no, do you have an example of anyone going to jail for a party. I asked first.

Theres piles of things you can theoretically to jail for but never would in practice. It's nothing new in law.
