Speaking of outrageous prices for drugs in Australia compared to old Blighty what does a gram of cocaine go for in a London nightclub these days?
Twenty years ago a gram of good coke cost 70 quid off a club dealer in greater London and a pill of MDMA went for 5-6 pound sterling which is price too good to be true to an Aussie cashed up with savings even if the Australian dollar is stuck at below 50 pence per single AUD
.
A gram of cocaine for $150 AUD compared to Australian cocaine prices why wouldn't a young Aussie take advantage.
Funnily enough you never hear banged up abroad style horror stories of Aussie backpackers getting arrested for drug possession of cocaine or MDMA anywhere in the United kingdom.
I for one have never read a newspaper article reporting a Australian national visiting London getting busted using party drugs in a upmarket SOHO lounge bar or a Aussie clubberdeported
The lure of affordable class A narcotics in London and the Western Europe region in general is well known among young Aussie/Kiwi adults
Not everyone from Australia and New Zealand visits the United kingdom and Western Europe to run wild on drugs. Plenty drink and smoke and travel to the Greek islands like Mykonos and Santorini to sunbathe the days away in the hot Mediterranean sun because the European region sun gives a white caucasian person the darkest brown suntan possible.
Since the early nineties Aussie and Kiwi middle class University students have been deferring second year of University to travel to London on a working holiday visa to spend 12 months using as much cocaine and MDMA they can get their hands on.
Cocaine and MDMA pills are everywhere in Western Europe. Heck I even managed to score a gram of top quality cocaine for £70 Irish pounds in far flung Galway City.
It was in the year before Ireland went from the Irish pound to the Euro but for a small regional irish city like Galway City that has a population of only 80,000 and the nearest international airport is 2 and half hours away by car it really surprised me cocaine could be purchased at the same relative price as London.
As I said $150 AUD for a gram is a great price.
I know cocaine prices are cheaper in Europe now than 20 years ago but MEH in Australia in the early nineties a ounce of indoor hydroponic grown skunk was $500 and a gram of uncut pure cocaine $500.
I read somewhere in 1991 a undercover Victoria police drug squad narc managed to work his way up the coke dealing ladder to score 500 grams for $80,000 AUD. That's a per gram price of $160. The profit margins are insane for cocaine in Melbourne.
But imagine how hard it is to smuggle a whole half a kilogram of coke from South America to Australia.
Gone are the good old days when Brazilians got away with smuggling 2-3 kilograms past airport customs hidden inside custom made surfboards or the frames of a paraglider.
Those smuggling techniques worked 10-20 years ago when airport customs were lax and a tanned Brazilian surfer could pass through airport customs and border security without attracting a closer inspection of his luggage. Now airport customs the world over are aware of surfers traveling with surfboards or paraglider equipment could be concealing contraband. A few big busts at San Paolo airport as well as at airports in Indonesia lifted the lid on that scam
If planning to smuggle cocaine by commercial airplanes successfully now a Latin American drug lord has to resort to paying a drug mule 10,000 USD to swallow as much plastic wrapped pellets of cocaine as possible.
