I feel the same way about nazi, fascist & Hitler

ppl are so extreme these days

How are your thoughts (and everyone else's) on the USA bumping up and modernizing our nuclear arsenal?

I'm all for it, makes no sense in having the money and resources used on maintaining old tech, I hope Trump is the first president to get a nuclear "football" app on his android/apple watch. :sus:

I don't think your arsenal really needs "bumping up", its already been holding the world to ransom pretty adequately for the last 70 years ;)

Things are seriously beggining to spin out of control right now. When there are this many leaks out of the white house saying the president has become unhinged things are very bad. It's scary that he could be in office for 3 more years. I'm not sure our democracy will survive this intact

If democracy leads to Trump, is it really something worth maintaining? I wonder if a system which requires people to earn a vote would be better.

I'm not sure how this would be determined though.

That's the problem.

Much as I hate the results, I'd hate thinking about how we'd select the voters. We used to have literacy tests here, which you passed if you were white.

Sometimes the best option still sucks.

If you ask me, you’re thinking about this the wrong way.

It’s not the system we should be focusing on, it’s the people. Education.

We need to make people a lot smarter. Our education system is a joke. There is so much we could do to improve the state of people’s intelligence and knowledge.

That’s the solution here. Trying to work around the idiots is a patch solution. A bandaid. We gotta get rid of the idiots.

Imagine how many other problems this would solve on top of bad choices in the election.

Education is the key. Solve the problem at its heart.

If democracy leads to trump..... Well, USA is not a democracy. If I believe the numbers, democracy could have delivered Clinton.
So I like the system and it has always worked. I like JessFRs post in response. I second his response.

The USA is not a true democracy. It is a representative republic. Pure democracy is simply mob rule. Supporters of Trump (and George W. Bush 17 years ago) would argue that the electoral college functioned as designed - that it did not allow the will of the most populous states to dictate who should be president. Not that I support Trump (or supported G. W. Bush 17 years ago), but that is the argument for preserving the electoral college, like it or not.

I wonder if I am the only person in the world who supports the electoral college even though I would have preferred it if trump and bush had lost.

That’s the thing about principles, you gotta follow them even when it’s to your disadvantage.

EDIT: You hear people sometimes say that America is "a republic, not a democracy". Honestly that's just a misunderstanding of what these words mean. The US is a republic, AND a representative democracy. It's not a one or the other situation. A republic is opposed to a monarchy. But being a republic says nothing as to being democratic or not.

There are no true pure democratic countries yet, and I doubt I'd want to live in one if there were.
So functionally when you say democracy, it can be assumed you mean a representative democracy.

I don't want to live in a democracy cause people are retarded and I don't want a tyranny of the slim majority situation. Which is one of a few reasons I support the electoral college system even if for the most part I'm on the side that would benefit if we just went with a simple majority vote. I'd never call myself a democrat or a republican. But if I absolutely had to take a side like my life depended on it I'd probably have to drag myself kicking and screaming over to the democrat side. Ugh, and I feel dirty for saying it. Cause I really hate democrats. Bunch of commie traitors. I just... Really hate republicans to perhaps a very very very small degree more. Bunch of heartless assholes. :)

Jess, I fully support the ec system and our two party system. Nature favors pairs (majority and minority party) and the system allows all states to have a (more or less) voice. I think it's brilliant and since I am told America is the envy of the world and all sorts of people want to come here....must be something to it?

I don't like the electoral college personally. It puts too much power into the hands of a few selected swing states. The popular vote is a better judge of what Americans want

What he meant was electoral college is a disaster if you lose, but awesome if you win.

I tend to agree
it just demonstrates the depths of his hypocrisy.

he criticised obama relentlessly for taking vacation and 'wasting' taxpayer money doing so.

he's taken more vacation and spend significantly more taxpayer money as a result.

he criticised obama for using executive orders, at one point suggesting that obama's use of eos was 'unconstitutional'.

trump hqas already signed 45 executive orders and is on track to sign twice as many as obama.

etc.
etc.
etc.

:(

Im sorry.. Is that supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing? ;)

Seriously though I really don't know that reflecting the will of the American people is all that great for the country.

Ahh but then how do you define America? We are 50 states,
the electoral college allows the president to be decided between the votes of the 50 states. What, you don't like your state to be different from those bozos next door? Why even have a vote anyway, just let California and New Yorkers make your decision for president....why have local and state laws, let DC make all the rules!

^ sometimes we're 50 states and sometimes we're one country. some things are best done at state level and some at the federal level. obviously, where you draw the line is a matter of opinion.
