2017 Trump Presidency Thread

They say Nixon asked his lawyer that. No one knows if a Pres can pardon himself, and Nixon knew Ford'd let him walk free anyway.

BUT, can Trump piss off enough people, including Pence, that no one is willing to pardon him, or support his auto-pardon?

Eh, I'd rather he just get the fuck out of there already.

^^It will be transparent so people are no longer casualties of the 60lb bags of drugs that get tossed over the wall. And solar.

So Trump is apparently freaking out because Mueller can investigate his finances including his income taxes.

So his lawyers are looking into whether or not he can pardon himself and Ivanka. Hypothetically!

And they're looking for dirt on Mueller's team. Donations to Democrats? Trump did that.

He's blaming Jeff Sessions.

Didn't someone here predict that the Mueller investigation would break him?
Oh that was me *blush*

Not sure anything will "break him"
Think trump going to be too hard to get rid of now its too late. He's just too powerful isn't he?

Weakness was not predicting the mess political parties would do to it. With just two effective parties, one always has a majority (more than a plurality). Every legislative session has only a 50/50 chance of balancing the executive. Even if the Senate was 100% ready to send Trump to prison, the house is Republican held. No action taken.

It looks to me like the rats are fleeing the sinking ship. The scariest part is someone is going to have to do some governing in the next 3 and a half years. Even if trump somehow survives this mess he will be weakened to the point of not being able to lead. If he had any class at all he would resign.

yep - this absolute clusterfuck of a presidency continues. it's too bad that people were not warned that this man was woefully under-qualified for this office.

oh wait. nevermind.

I'm pretty sure he could care less, as someone else would always be ready to be his apologist no matter what. We see that happening here in this thread. Some people will say and do whatever it takes to defend him no matter if he lies, or if he's convicted. People will say this is the news against him, fake news all over the world, etc.

it's interesting, i've seen a few people saying on twitter that white house staff need to really start assessing their options at this point, as some of nixon's employees served time behind bars for the crimes his administration committed in the watergate scandal, yet the president himself did not.

as this is clearly a criminal presidency, it's worth looking at any vaguely analogous precedents, as this is fairly uncharted territory legally - but let's face it - trump's no stranger to legal proceedings, so you'd expect him to have all the greatest, most fabulous legal representatives.
really! believe me - the best. all the greatest people. really the best.

should be interesting to see how this all plays out. i just hope they get a move on.

oh also, how's this -

the chief spokesman for the trump legal team also resigned yesterday.

if trump is so adamant he, his team and family have done nothing wrong, his lawyers are talking about pardons already?

lol

there seems to be mounting signs that trump's completely fucked, but they've been so brazen about the whole thing that it almost makes me worry about what the trump people are capable of, if they feel cornered.
they don't seem to even acknowledge basic principles of dignity or credibility, nor do they feel bound to any need to be honest or true to their words.
it's all a bit of a laugh in the case of absurd twitter rants or surreal press conferences - but when it gets down to the serious business of governance, and law-making...the implications are far more troubling.
it's like trump has deliberately filtered out every sane voice he can from the inner circle of his administration.

i don't think even the most generous, poetic take on current events could describe this as "draining the swamp".
it looks a lot more like trump wallowing in his own shit on a global stage.

Like I said, with so much dirty spread all around, people are settling for so much less imho. Despite of all investigations and all the great people in the United States, I believe this is a major step back in history.

indeed. so much of the "incompetence" seems to be calculated to distract.

it's hard to see any good outcomes from all of this. it's interesting that the UK seems to be at a similar impasse with the whole brexit situation. it's as if a similar type of disaffection struck both countries last year, and large amounts of people in each country seem to now experiencing something similar to political "buyer's remorse".

it would be great if the US had something in place that would allow another election to be called.
at the moment it seems like some kind of stalemate - a very undemocratic one, at that.
all the vested interests and conflicting loyalties in the republican party make impeachment seem unlikely - so i guess everyone that is horrified by this administration is just holding out on some legal situation presenting itself that makes his presidency impossible to continue.
i do hope something happens soon. the anticipation keeps building, but it's hard to predict what's going to happen.

Everyone needs to realize that if Trump is impeached by the Republicans (Trump's losing independent voters and if he loses enough then the Republicans will turn on him like it's Lord of the Flies), then Pence becomes president.
Aside from being nuts, he knows how government works and most Americans have no idea that he's really nuts and a hard-core conservative.
And don't forget vice president Paul Ryan.
