I'd say that knowledge alone is probably not of much meaningful value. Intelligence alone most certainly is of meaningful value. Combine it with knowledge and power is very much in effect. That's considerably less pithy than the original though so probably won't be remembered as well.

I'm a bit of a Bacon (both of 'em but the artist in this case) myself. Did you see that a load of his "lost" painting were discovered not long back? Mixed feelings on that. He made it very clear - and went to great lengths to ensure - that only his "official" paintings were to be seen by the public. But as they just happen to have been discovered it is interesting to see what didn't make the cut and what could've been.

No I didn't see any articles on Bacon's works recently, can you link? I can imagine how horrified any artist would be at the publication of works they'd deem non-view able. What a horrendous thing to do to him. In death there is little power....
