Orlando atrocity

mentally unstable man with access to assault rifles and ammunition snaps and goes on a killing spree.

in my humble opinion, the problem is a) easy access to needlessly dangerous guns and b) large population inevitably will have some proper lunatics

get a grip america.
 
As somebody said the idea that the american domestic guns are any sort of defence against the gubbmint is ridiculous - when was the last time this happened? (and they didn't all get killed). It's probably the opposite considering that (i guess) gun owners are likely to be more on the conservative/reactionary end of the political system, so they would probably be shooting the revolutionaries alongside the police (or maybe being trump's orange shirts or something). And just generally having everyone tooled up and afraid of everyone else is a good way to keep people afraid and easy to manipulate.

About orlando: My thoughts to all people affected. Will 'ISIS' be backtracking in saying he's one of theirs now it's sounding like he was possibly gay himself? I read somewhere that his ex-wife had said in brazilian media that he was gay, but that she'd been told by the FBI not to mention it in the american media (for obvious reasons).

I've read that the gunman had been visiting the particular club for ~3 years.
 
It's strange because, as an interest, I love guns. If you looked at my youtube history, you'd think I was a gun dealer/collector. I've never even fired a gun but I will watch hours of content about the history and different mechanics. Still, considering this, I have no desire to own a gun.

I also know that, if I had access to firearms, I would be dead a million times from silly impulse.

EDIT: Just to clarify - although I have no desire to own a gun, I would probably quite like to be a member of a shooting club. However, I might fire a gun and decide I don't like it. It's just like I'm fascinated by warships but have no desire to join the Navy.

Well mate you know my interest in historical and modern firearms. They facinate me (you checked out the Kris Vector with the wierd 90 degree bolt? ...mental). Plus I had a firearms licence and several handguns from the age of 21....lost them 2 years later after dunblane and never had the patience to get into bolt-action rifles and shotguns..

I can relate to that, in the sense that i have no interest in owning a gun, but i saw a guy fire a tommy gun when i was in the States once, and it looked pretty cool. Partly for its 1920s underworld chic, though i guess.

I'm way more into guitars. Guns sound shithouse.

When you make people feel like they're trapped in a corner and drive them to insanity, they'll do insane things. It doesn't matter what our gun laws are. These shootings will continue until people start realizing what the true nature of the problem is.

it is a complex issue with many factors. until i moved here i was not aware of the power of the gun lobby in u.s. politics. there are many 'ordinary' u.s. gun owners who will readily admit that they believe massacres like these are the price the u.s. pays for their freedom to own a gun.

Tis' a good post, indeed. No matter how informed we think we are as outsiders, I don't think we can fully relate without living in the States. His post kind of echoes my thoughts that the root of a lot of the social problems in the USA stem from corporatism and the money in politics. It's easy to forget how much we all benefit from a good dose of socialism over here; Americans work their asses off with, as you say, multiple jobs and still struggling to make ends meet.

Argh I can't help think that post you mention is bollocks Ali mate...

Its a global recession and many other countries own guns and don't go into their local nightclub to blow away 50 countrymen...Sweden with their militia system means almost every household has a Sig assault rifle but do you hear of this in Sweden? Nope
