A former police detective and Drug Enforcement Agency task force member committed suicide after being arrested for allegedly setting up drug sales involving substances seized by his department, WBNS-TV reported.

Authorities said 43-year-old Tye Downard hung himself inside his cell on Monday morning. The 20-year veteran officer for the Reynoldsburg Police Department had been arrested on Feb. 18 and charged with possession of drugs with the intent to distribute.

Downard was accused of delivering drugs ranging from Percocet pills to heroin and marijuana, among others, to a confidential informant on 21 different occasions between October 2015 and this month. Two of those deliveries included pills and harvested marijuana buds that were seized using search warrants.

WSYX-TV reported that Downard made nearly $35,000 from the transactions leading up to his arrest. He faced up to 20 years in prison as a result of the charges against him, and nearly 50 cases in which he was involved will be reviewed.

The suspect, who was not on suicide watch, was pronounced dead at a hospital in Delaware, Ohio, after he was found hanged inside his jail cell. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien has since requested that the charges against him be dismissed in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation into his alleged actions.

Is it unreasonable of me to at least suspect, that this man - given his 20 year career in the DEA - would have been among those who've publicly shamed drug addicts without any sympathy or remorse? And would it be too much to at least entertain the notion that, in the event of a drug addict's death due to an overdose, he would have been among those who have publicly voiced their approval towards such needless tragedies because "the more addicts that fatally overdose, the better?"

Now, obviously I did not know this guy, so I can't assume with any certainty that he likely always gave habitual drug users an especially hard time. But if he indeed could be described in a manner closely resembling my aforementioned conjecture, then, for the record, I'd like to say the following: "The more crooked pigs that are brought to justice, the better, particularly two-faced 'drug warriors.' And I will not lose an inkling of sleep over his voluntary death."

this is a tragedy....not because this bastard is dead, but because it shows that the war on drugs is completely backwards and full of corruption, yet nothing is being down to stop it.

The powers that be really need to take a good hard look at this...won't happen, but if it did maybe it would usher in some change even on a small level.

Great post. I agree wholeheartedly.

Yeah fuck that guy. If that guy caught me selling weed and oxy he'd bust my ass hard. He would subject me to a system that he, if he were in my shoes, would rather die instead of face. So fuck him.

This guy was likely doing this alot longer than we'll ever even know about. He knew the risks involved. What a little bitch though, I mean I know it would suck going to prison as an LEO, but there is protective custody.
