40% of Ecstasy users are taking 'bath salts, raising the risk of drug poisoning'

Ecstasy - also called Molly - is used by one out of 10 young adults in US
The drug is popular in the party or dance club scene, scientists say
But, four out of 10 users unknowingly take ecstasy mixed with bath salts
A new study found the drug is commonly mixed with synthetic substances
This could account for a recent rise in ecstasy poisonings, the study says

Ecstasy is estimated to be used by one out of ten young adults in the US.

The popular party drug – also known as ‘Molly’ or MDMA – is only increasing in popularity.

However, despite its prevalence, the ecstasy consumed is often ‘far from pure', according to New York University scientists.

The drug is commonly mixed with so-called 'bath salts' – and other synthetic psychoactive substances, they warned.

Furthermore, most ecstasy users are unaware that their drug has been mixed with synthetic substances – which could account for a recent rise in ecstasy poisonings.

Study author Dr Joseph Palamar said: ‘Given the sharp rise in poisonings and recent deaths at dance festivals related to ecstasy use, research was needed to examine whether nightclub/festival attendees who use ecstasy or Molly have been unintentionally or unknowingly using bath salts.

‘Little is known about these new drugs and some may be more dangerous than MDMA.’

'Bath salts', otherwise known as synthetic cathinones, are often 'cheap substitutes' for other drugs, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse

They are known to produce effects that include paranoia, hallucination, extreme agitation and violent behavior, panic attacks and more.

The team of scientists surveyed young adults outside of dance clubs and festivals between July and September of 2015.
The researchers asked them about their use of ecstasy and other drugs.

The participants were asked whether they had knowingly used ecstasy – and also whether they had knowingly used any of 35 listed 'bath salts' or other novel drugs.

I know my stuff is real because I use a battery of tests against the unknown sample in an attempt to accurately determine what it is composed of. However, prior to getting this supplier of real stuff I would do the whole festival sampling, maybe 1/5th of it was real mdma and i mean ALL THE TIME. Not just one year but i was doing that for about 2 or 3 years about 3 festivals a year and you would have to look for a long time to come across someone with something real.

Just saying the only way to get the real thing is to test endless samples.

Thank god i don't buy drugs at festivals. I bought a few grams a few years ago when it was plentiful and just sat on it.

Yeah, I very strongly agree (and urge big time). In fact, not doing so could easily be a life-changing experience nowadays, I'm afraid.

Dealers and Politicians are both vetted experts when it comes to making bullshit smell like roses, it seems.
