Hi folks.

You may be aware that 4 'new' elements have been discovered/created. These are all heavy metals. There is an online petition calling for one of these elements to be named 'Lemmium' in memory of that ugly twat Lemmy that recently did one from this mortal coil.

Please can anyone that had any respect for this dood take the time to sign?

Thanks.

The naming conventions will not allow it. For an element to be named after a person, they need to be a dead scientist. Although, I suppose one could argue that Lemmy was a scientist of sorts :)

elements have to be named after either their properties, a myth, a mineral, a place or a scientist, so it isn't that great a stretch to suggest that the Lemmy star is a place.

Update:

Making Lemmium happen is as easy as 1,2,3

9 Jan 2016 — Thank you, thank you, thank you for your wonderful support for our campaign for help make ‘Lemmium’ the new chemical name for Heavy Metal in the Periodic table. We thought it was about time we gave you an update on what has been happening and how you can help (don’t worry we don’t want your money!)
Not only are we hitting massive numbers, over 123,000 at last count we are picking up lots of support through our Twitter account @Lemmiummetal. Please follow us there to see who the next well known name will be to get behind us
‘Don’t usually support campaigns but this one must surely be right’ – Professor Brian Cox
‘Let’s do this’ – Duff McKagan, Guns N Roses
‘I think this is a cool thing to do … please sign this petition’ – Phil Campbell, Motorhead
‘How could we not?’ – Tim Burgess, The Charlatans
‘Well done, keep it going’ – Phil Alexander, Editor in Chief - Kerrang, Mojo and Q magazines
‘What a great way to honour him’ – British Phonographic Industry (The Brit Awards)
The last one is particularly pleasing as we now have the support of British music industry as well as the British Government to move into the next phase of the campaign to really start to make the argument as to why Lemmy deserves the unique honour of having an element named after him in the Periodic table.
We know that success is a long way off, but it is possible with the kind of support we have been getting and so to celebrate 123k we are going to ask you to help in 1,2,3 ways
1 – please follow us at @LemmiumMetal on Twitter
2 – register your e-mail address here at www.lemmium.org so we can send you updates and news about the campaign. This is only in development phase ands loads more content to come
3 – Pledge to tell three people about the campaign at change.org however you can in person, online, by phone, telegram, semaphore, morse code, mime, charades (actually no we don’t recommend those last two)
Finally please bear with us for a few days to get a bit more organised, the speed of the success of this campaign has taken us all by surprise. A lovely surprise but we now need a few days to get up our website, Facebook page and draw up our plans for the next few weeks. If you would like to volunteer for the campaign we would love to hear from you – we are going to need people who can write (about Lem and science), design, run marketing activity, help us to understand complicated science and people that can translate our stuff into different languages to help with our global campaign to make this happen.
Thanks again and remember making Lemmium a reality is as easy as 1,2,3…
