Post your tips and tricks for growing and keeping long, healthy, and thick hair! For girls and guys. :3

My boyfriend and I have been trying different things to keep our hair looking full and healthy. I was actually inspired by this thread: http://www.bluelight.org/vb/threads/773112-Thicker-Looking-Hair-Naturally!!?highlight=hair+thread which linked this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v2PRuxoMp8. Basically the guy talks about using natural oils (leaving it in hair overnight) to keeping your hair thick and full and even possibly growing back from areas where you're balding. I'm not sure if it is specifically for men.. so I did some general research on these oils and here's what I found:

His "formula" was:
2 oz almond oil - thickening hair
2oz. castor oil - Helps with hair regrowth and hair loss, makes the hair richer and darker, prevents split ends, treats dandruff and dry scalp moisturizes the hair and makes it shine, works in an antifungal and antibacterial way
1 oz coconut oil
1oz. jojoba oil - easily penetrates scalp, antibacterial properties (dandruff, etc), hydrates hair, adds volume, adds shine, elasticity, and softness, encourages hair growth.
1oz. emu oil
Emu Oil “Wakes Up” 80% of Sleeping Hair Follicles; Read more: http://undergroundhealthreporter.com/emu-oil-for-hair-loss/#ixzz3vgIObxj2
1 oz. E-oil - for hair growth, shine, strength, splits ends.

Sounds pretty good, right? My boyfriend and I mixed 2 oz of almond oil, 2 oz. of coconut oil, 1 oz of jojoba, and 1 oz of emu oil and let it soak overnight. Results? Extremely soft and plush hair! Pretty amazing and that was only one time! We did it again this week and same results. I'm thinking of adding some of it to my conditioner... and applying it to my eyelashes. :o I'm still waiting for the rest to come through on amazon.

1. Soo.. what type of shampoo/conditioner do you use? I've been trying to find some good ones but havent really had any luck. I use Head and Shoulders for my dandruff but I don't think it's doing anything great with my hair. I've recently switched to Dove Nourishing Oil care and I really like it.

I've been thinking of purchasing some leave-in conditioner and read really good results with this:

2. What type of leave-in conditioner do you use?
3. What type of heat-protectant oil/spray do you use? HSI Argan oil
4. Do you use any specific treatments/oils on your hair?
5. What type of styling products do you use? Men & woman
6. How often do you cut your hair?
7. Any general tips and tricks for healthy hair!

Not the same as what you're talking about but I take prenatal vitamins (I'm not pregnant btw) for my hair and nails.

I've cured my seborrehic dermatitis that I used to aimlessly visit dermatologists for by simply washing my hair once every 10-12 days. I used to have dreadlocks and figured out that genre of shampoo works best (Knotty Boy is the brand I use). The less additives it has or what it leaves behind in your hair for "conditioning" properties always causes the most irritation/inflammation. My hair never smells bad and it's crazy thick. I've broken a few brushes when I used to let it grow out, but now I keep it to a specific style for ease of maintenance.

Never used any special vitamins for my hair and I brush it when I wash it to ensure I wash all the way down to the roots/scalp effectively. I wear hats a lot to mitigate the bleeching from the sun as much as possible. Oddly, my hair is naturally dark brown and slightly wavy, but when I get in the sun too much I experience bizarre, uneven blonding. I don't use any specific hair products for styling. When needed I use a non-comedogenic body lotion in a sparing amount to achieve what I want. I used to use a leave in conditioner, but it started to cause breakouts along my hairline/widow's peak.

covering your hair is supposedly the best way to avoid early baldness.

also not washing it too much.

What type of heat-protectant do you guys use? I'm trying to find a new brand from HSI argan oil. It doesn't really make my hair softer.

10-12 days? I guess that makes sense since you have dreadlocks. I wash my hair every other day. It's sunny where I live so my hair also gets lighter in the sun. My outer hair is usually lighter/slightly blonde whereas my inner hair is dark brown.

I did have dreadlocks which is where that habit started from. My hair doesn't produce very much oil and a couple washes within a single week and I got brittle crack fiend hair.

Have you ever tried just washing your hair daily or EOD with warm water, or just a regular body lotion/cream (eg cocoa butter) and rinsing excess out? It should help retain the good bacterial flora and naturally acidic scalp oils without infusing all that chemical crap and alkalinity from regular shampoos.

These have helped my hair grow healthy and strong. Currently, I don't have any split ends either.

1. Use a fairly natural shampoo, right now I use Acure volume shampoo - it's sulfate free, paraben free, phthalate free, petroleum free, PEG free, silicone free, synthetic fragrance free, and cruelty free. Their conditioner is pretty good as well, but I only use it once in a while.

2. I deep condition with coconut oil, and leave it in over night. I do this at least once a week.

3. I style my hair as little as possible with heat. I try to let it air dry, and only flat iron when I am going out. When I use heat, I use an organic oil blend to protect it. I will update the post with the formula later - don't remeber everything off the top of my head.

4. I only shampoo my hair about once or twice a week, and will do apple cider vinegar rinses when I don't shampoo.

5. I dye my hair red with organic henna. The henna has the consistency of mud and smells like lawn trimmings, but it seems to strengthen the hair, or at least leave a good coating on the hair that prevents breakage. It's a plant extract. I do this once or twice a month, and love the texture.

6. To highlight my hair I use organic raw honey (has proxide but also moisturizes). It's not a quick process, but it works and the damage is minimal.

7. I eat fairly healthy - a lot of fresh fruits and veggies. I also juice - kale, beets, carrots, pineapple, and drink plenty of water.

8. I take vitamins.

9. I cut my hair maybe four time a year for style. I don't have split ends so there's not really damage.

Hope this helps! I'm looking forward to seeing other responses!

Guy here. My hair comes halfway down my back. The lady in the salon said my hair was in amazing condition, which surprised me because I don't do too much to it.. and she said "exactly!".

Wash once every 3-4 days, and do the overnight coconut oil trick. I use quite a harsh shampoo (H&S) as I haven't managed to figure out what it is about my diet or products that causes quick irritation of the scalp. Unfortunately recently it seems to have spread to the skin behind my right ear lobe.

I use the over the counter Nizoral shampoo 1% from Wal-Mart and sometimes I'll switch with the Head and Shoulders 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner with almond oil. But I can't go 3 days without washing my hair because my hair gets way too oily for me personally and I just can't have that! So I go every 2 days at the most without washing my hair.. at least that's what I've been trying to do. I think for me after a year or so when my wife and I have had kids I'm just going to ask my doctor to prescribe me Propecia at 1mg. Yes, I'm very terrified of the side effects with gyno and libido loss.. I don't want to be the unfortunate person who has those sides.. but he scared the piss out of me and said within 5 to 7 years my hair is only going to get thinner. I'm 29.. and I'm not balding my any means.. I have a great hairline.. but I've just always had thinner hair and it makes me so insecure I get severely depressed and it kills me! So what else is a guy supposed to do? And I wouldn't look good bald so that's never going to be an option =/ sucks man! I wish God blessed me with great hair and great skin.. pisses me off sometimes!

Well first of all if you don't wash your hair regularly the oil weighs it down making it look thinner. so its better to wash your hair daily. Secondly the reason you start to become bald is because you lose circulation to your scalp so it's better to do scalp massages or I have a friend who likes to kind of do a hand stand for a minute just to get the blood flowing any stiff areas or knot should be massaged out there's also scalp treatment or I personally use a massager with a scalp massager attachment. I also have a friend Who has the most beautiful hair and she says she takes vitamin E capsules.

No split ends? I'm jealous. I got to get that shampoo!!! Lol. Hmm.. and please post your heat oil blend!

I wash my hair once every 2-3 days, it gets pretty oily, yuck. :P

For the heat protectant I usually use equal parts Shea butter and cacao butter, and will add 20 drops of grapeseed oil and a few drop of an essential oil so it smells good. Lately I've been adding peppermint oil because it's cold out, and to me the mint fits with the cold lol. You are going to want to melt the butters, and then add the oils and mix everything really well.
