Bupe Patches question

Was prescribed 5mg Bupe patches for pain what to expect. Anyone have experience with these for pain management. I am supposed to use one patch for a week then add another. Also prescribed Oxycodone for breakthrough pain.
 
If anyone has any experience with the Bupe patches your advice would be greatly appreciated. I have been prescribed Percocet 5/325 and I need to take about 2 to 3 at a time to get relief. Tonight I took 2 mg of oxycodone 5 mg IR which was prescribed along with the Bupe patches and felt very wired and anxious I am also prescribed 3 mg of Klonopin but I had to take an extra 2 mg to coming down. I never felt that way with the Percocet is there a reason for this reaction totally confused any help would be greatly appreciated thank you
 
been on bupe for a long time (for addiction) and never heard of the patch; just Googled it and read it after seeing this and thats kinda weird.

wouldnt a bupe patch block the oxycodone? isnt that the idea of bupe!? I know some use it for pain but its usually the only pain when used.
 
I was prescribed the 5mcg/5mg patch like you and it didn't work for me. Kept me out of withdrawals if I ran out of my main pain med early but other than that it was very ineffective for pain relief.
 
you can't mix bupe and other opiates.

it'll block it, or send you into withdrawal, who the hell is prescribing both of them at the same time?
 
That's what I don't understand is why would I be prescribed both? This is a very reputable Dr from a large Hospital.

My PM doc originally prescribed me Norco and the Butrans patch (bupe). I don't know if he was just under educated or what. You're right though, doesn't make sense. The dosage of the patch was so ridiculously low too. 5 mics an hour and the entire patch only contained 5mg of bupe. They were supposed to last 7 days. Pricey too as there is no generic. If you do the math I don't even think you get the full 5mgs over the 7 days.
 
it will NOT send you into auto withdrawal because you are wearing the path and attempting to take the oxycodone after or when feeling some type of pain; so if anything, that just blocks the oxycodone. if you were to be doing it the other way around and taking oxycodone daily and then try and use the bupe; you will go into instant withdrawal; so the Dr. is playing it safe but at the same time the bupe is preventing the oxycodone from reliving any pain or even working a bit.

usually when someone is scripted bupe for pain it is their only medication. or at least from what I've read and who I know.

You pretty much nailed it I spoke with a few other pain management doctors and what they said was they were giving me the bupe and oxycodone to basically get the Bupe in my system and then on the next visit take me off the oxycodone as the prescription was only for two weeks. So the plan was to basically give me the oxycodone for breakthrough pain until the BUPE started working and then get me off the oxycodone so basically a try out to see how the bupe works because the Dr knows that after a few days it will block the Oxy. Pretty shitty move if you ask me though.
 
Yeah pretty silly huh? Funny enough I was on the bupe for two months and I seemed to feel the Norco through it but then again maybe the bupe dose was so low that my receptors weren't that saturated. I put a stop to the bupe quickly anyhow. I would run out of the Norco about 10 days before the refill which left me with the bupe alone and it didn't touch the pain and I let the doctor know that. That coupled with the fact the bupe was so damn expensive was enough reason for the doc to prescribe me Norco alone. Been that way ever since. Getting a bit OT here, sorry, but funny enough the doc didn't want to prescribe me a long acting to go along with the Norco last visit when I asked about it. Not even 10mg of morphine ER, said he didn't want to prescribe me something that strong although he was willing to up me to 6 Norco 10s a day.

According to the opiate conversion chart hydrocodone and morphine are equivalent in strength but he acted like morph was much stronger. He's more willing to give me oxy it's than the morph which is fine with me. I think I'll be going that route next visit all that APAP really seems to be doing a number on my liver. Sorry for getting so OT.

What I think all docs should realize is that morphine is riskier than oxys because if the doc is worried about the patient abusing the meds, an addict might sniff an oxy, but will surely inject an mscontin as morphine is like 2X stronger than oxy via IV. Maybe your doc thought this? Oh, yes and Man In The Dark bupe does not block in low doses like this :) I know this as a fact. You can google this.
 
Yeah, I don't think he suspected abuse other wise I doubt he would have upped my Norco or suggested oxy. He just seemed against morphine. Fine with me actually, I have never really responded well to morphine other than IV in the hospital. Pill wise I can take up to 15mg of morph and I get more out of a less than equivalent dose of Norco. IMO morphine really sucks orally. Probably due to the low BA.
 
I was on morphine 14 years, helped my pain immensely. Then I was booted from the PM clinic. They said I was positive for cocaine, which is ridiculous. I asked for another test, immediately, but they refused. My new pain dr put me on Butrans Patches (15 micrograms/hr), which don't help much. She's really gung-ho about invasive procedures (like ESI, nerve-burning, etc). She claims I couldn't possibly be in as much pain as I claim (I have DDD, osteoporosis & rheumatoid arthritis, fibro, scoliosis, stenosis, & a few others). Right now I'm working with her best as I can, but I'm spending more & more time in bed, because any extra-curricular activities leave me in agony for days. Butrans just don't cover it, plus they don't last 7 days.
 
I've found the bupe patches don't interfere with other opioids. Friends have given me morphine & lot tab, both of them felt like they did before the bupe patches
 
Cyn...Hey and WELCOME! I'm told the same crap and called an enigma because of my threshold for pain.

I too suffer with severe osteo-BOTH! :\ Story far too long to repeat, but it's posted here on BL.

I was prescribed Bupe patch, for pain management, but it was FAR too expensive to even get filled without script coverage.

I'm older than dirt, compared to most here, but I think no matter the age...we all feel PAIN. I'm around if anyone needs an ear. :)

Man IN the Dark, you got hooked up! Bupe patches are pretty much the best shit you can get, but you will need to raise your dose imho. I think the highest you can get in the US is 2 20mcg patches at the same time. I read tons about these, I think you will love it once your dose is higher!!!
 
I was prescribed the 5mcg patch and it didn't do jack except put a dent in the old wallet! And this was after a 6 month opioid break. Now if I was on a stronger dose it might have done something but with the cost of the low dose I don't imagine it would have been coat effective. Having OCD made it a pita too as I was always messing with it. Doc decided it wasn't working and not affordable so we stopped it. Only positive thing it did was stop withdrawals. Prob would have been better off on subutex although I imagine there's no generic for that either.
