Platform-Independent Technical Gibberings - hardware and "Internet"

I was agreeing with you and sighting (in jest) Da House cats thrift in relation to his keyboard, apologies if that wasnt clear I am largely incoherent :D

I've just changed to two 22" screens at work and definitely prefer it, I have a dock for my work laptop so use an external keyboard most of the time although I also have a 'dirty' laptop for.....dirty things;)

At home I only ever use a laptop, I have a desktop in the house that I use for my ISP Email via Outlook but I just remote into it. I can not fekin abide touch pads and since no one wanted to fund a rather expensive habit for ThinkPads ( with their little red nipple ) I use a logitech marble as normal mices give me RSI.

multiple screens make life so much easier, I have 3 1080p screens and an extra wireless keyboard/mouse, use one screen for school work and gaming and the other two screens for everything else, it's like having 2 pc's. I used to just solely use laptops for a while with extremely small fonts and customised window manager theme to take all the titlebars and handles off of windows to cram as much in as possible. I also have a laptop which I removed the screen from completely which I can ssh and rdp into and still use.

Isn't the plural of computer mouse "mouses"?

Anyway, I also get RSI using a mouse so I just use my Wacom for everything (except what little PC gaming I do) now. Much faster and more accurate than a mouse.

I'm not making myself sound any less hipster here with my mechanical keyboard and stylus based pointer control am I? Fuckin digital artists are weird eh.

The old-fashioned clicky keyboards used to have the letters and figures moulded right the way through the keycaps, not as stick-on transfers. So as the keytops inevitably wore away, more of the letter beneath was exposed. (And when an individual switch soldered to a printed circuit board becomes worn out -- and some keys inevitably will get used more than others; Q, A, O, P if you were a Spectrum fan; Z, X, :, / if you were raised on the BBC micro -- it's cheaper to replace than a whole membrane; which you might not even be able to get hold of on its own anyway.) But two-shot injection moulding is a costly process, so almost nobody does it anymore, meaning lousy keyboards all around. Despite the fact that you would probably spend more on inferior keyboards over the lifetime of a decent one if you had bought that in the first place. See also "Vimes Boots Theory".

By the way, my laptop keyboard doesn't have a numeric keypad -- not even the option to use part of the main typing area as one -- and I don't really miss it.

most of my laptops have had a numerical keypad superimposed on part of the keyboard accessible with a function key press. I find lack of numeric keypad annoying for some applications like blender where you really need it.

josh: i have a wacom tablet, but find it a bit of a cunt to use, how long did it take you to get used to it? I've been practicing just writing the alphabet and sketching 3d shapes etc but it seems to be taking ages to get good control over it. Any tips?

I've been using one exclusively instead of a mouse for about 10 years now so I can honestly say I can't remember how long it took to get used to it. I don't really use it for much drawing or writing though, more as an actual mouse replacement. My drawing and handwriting ability is rubbish regardless of whether it's using a real pen or a digital one (despite my job title being Artist :/ ), so it's hard to tell if the wacom hinders me or not...

I'd say "Pah! You don't even need cursor keys as long as you've got H, J, K and L" but actually, it's so long since I actually had to use vi, I've probably forgotten most of it.

My boss's fault, for converting me to pico / nano .....

Every time I have to use vi it involves having a cheat sheet open in my browser.

What was the text editor that was a bit like WordStar (complete with the same ctrl+K, B; ctrl+K, K; ctrl+K, V shortcuts for begin block, end block and move block) and optionally had the help taking up the top half of the screen like WordStar?

EDIT: In actual hardware news, I took a USB mic / headphone adaptor (alas, no stereo line-in; but I already have a USB phono / line-in adaptor) back to the shop today that I bought last week but was faulty. Tried it with Raspberry Pi (for which it is ultimately destined); dmesg output came up with a bunch of USB errors trying to talk to device, and lsusb did not show up anything that was not connected before I tried blugging it in. Even if the driver is not built in the kernel, then you should get a manufacturer and device ID such as 0d8c:013c if it recognised the device at all. Tried fitting heftier PSU, unplugging keyboard and mouse and going in by ssh, just in case it was a power problem. Still no dice. Tried it in laptop; dmesg output came up with USB errors trying to talk to device, nothing new in lsusb output. Tried it on a borrowed Mac, absolutely nothing happened (the Mac has a nice graphical equivalent of the lsusb command). Was not able to find a Windows box to try it on (though it did not come with a driver CD, implying it just used standard USB audio codec driver which in every modern OS, and anyway even if nobody ever wrote a Mac or Linux driver for it then it still ought to have a hex ID in lsusb).

Shop assistant plugged it into a Windows box, then it came up with a message about finding a driver, then that failed, and it said there was a problem with the device ..... he unplugged it, replugged it and this time nothing at all happened. Swapped it for another one from the shelves, plugged that in and a light came on which had bot happened in the broken one. Got it home. Works fine in laptop, so driver at least exists in stock Ubuntu kernel ..... and most prob'ly in stock Raspbian kernel, not that I am afraid of building a poxy kernel module anyway .....

My mum has just kindly given me her "old" iPad, because she's upgraded to a newer, lighter one, she has more money than sense, and she likes buying gadgets even more than I do. She's 72 btw.

So I set it up from new, and accepted all the default settings, which means Apple can have all my data and location details etc. cos I just don't give a fuck any more.

It's nice. %)

(but now firmly in koneko's grubby little T-Rex fingers)

becomingjulie: the real fun starts when you get into writing kernel modules for undocumented proprietary chipsets, i spent a long time getting linux to run on random adsl routers (mdpv fueled curiosity overload).

There are a lot of really really terrible usb produts out there, sounds like you just got a dud with a manufacturing fault though.....

felix: beware of potential sideffects of ipad usage, like hearing voices telling you to buy more apple products, and feeling a strong urge to queue for 3 days to get them.

^ Haha. No chance. :p

I've got a shitload of apps on my iPhone. Does anyone know if it's possible to duplicate them on the iPad? Is that allowed? Or would I need to repurchase any I wanted on it?

(I suck at iTunes, cos it fucking sucks)

Too late, the voices are already in my head :D I'm such an Apple geek, brought up on the Macintosh, pagemaker and illustrator I just can't help myself :o That's what happens to some failed artists... And I wonder why I have awful hand and finger pain today :!

Ha, I've allocated your Guinness allowance towards all my favourites on MY new toy =D%):p

Needs must and all that eh ;)

i bought a new mobo (asus m5a78l/usb3), cpu (amd fx-6300) and ram (16gb of ddr3-1600) and installed it all today. fuck me if the pc didn't boot windows first time on restart. pretty impressed. i had to update a bunch of drivers, but all done in less than an hour...
