From the previews spread all over the news it sound like they're trying to discredit a witness or two in the hope that the rest will go with it. MPs, a lord chief justice, a member of the royal family and public school headmasters all intervened to stop a bishop being prosecuted for sexual abuse 22 years ago, the Old Bailey has heard.

He escaped justice when his first victim complained in 1992 after interventions from leading figures in the establishment. Instead of being prosecuted he was given a caution.

Ball was a close friend of the Prince of Wales, who gave him a cottage on his Duchy of Cornwall grounds after he was cautioned in 1993.

I didn't watch but i heard the bbc this morning blustering past the complaints from the police about the program.

I think that class has no real bearing on paedophilia, except inasmuch as it confers power (and power is accessible to any parents, who statistics tell us are most likely abusers). The main difference is the ability to cover it up (and usually when lower class people feel the benefit of cover up, it's because they knew (or spent christmas with) higher class people). Maybe the elite are more likely to be paedophiles in some weird ritual context, but i think that's largely a red herring. A very important factor in paedo cover ups is their connection to intelligence blackmail and control (eg Kincora); and possibly it sits alongside other depravities as a way to bind aspiring elite gadabouts together (eg up until recently any deviation by cameron from the interest of his fellow gavestonians could be met with surreptitious oink)

(Hi BHM): Why is the choice only ever the overlords we have now or president blair? Aren't there any other candidates possible? (do you really think blair would win a vote?) Why not have no president? Or choose them randomly every year like jury service? And anyway, if the president had the same meagre symbolic powers the monarchists claim the queen has, why worry about president blair?

The Surrey Comet will attest to this, having had a D-notice served on it in 1984 to stop it reporting the cover ups in the name of national security. The Dolphin Square residence, a place many powerful MPs and Lords have homes and flats, is yet another cover up of epic proportions, possibly involving murder.

So where does the class bearing come in besides cover up? The public (private) schooling system that literally breeds abuse through a culture of beatings, fagging etc. Learned behaviour is repeated behaviour.

I am not belittling most abusers come from 'normal' parented families, where abuse may also be rife (though not part of an accepted culture). But I do believe it would be a crime to ignore the ruling class and let them get away with murder, child molestation and rape.

People don't get D-notices for nothing. Leon Brittain wasn't shoved off to Brussels at the height of his career for nothing. Harvey Proctor wasn't shoved out of his recent cosy job as PPS to a Lord for nothing. And Prince Charles's name doesn't keep coming up again and again for nothing.

Concentrating some of our resources on this (as the police often seem reluctant to) does not detract from any bigger picture.

I'm with you on all that - i'm not saying that we shouldn't concentrate on it because most is in the 'normal' family - the elite paedo-covering up is the worse crime because it contains and facilitates paedophilia as well as covering it up. The networks/rings of paedos seem often/nearly always to have links to high-ups but they often seem to be populated/run by people from lower classes too (birds of a feather). i'm just saying the propensity to paedophilia would work out about equal across class all things considered. Maybe that's just a lazy hippy guess though (i want to love everyone (even the horrible ones)) - maybe there is more paedophilia in higher classes, as they may feel more able to ignore the prevailing taboos compared to the wider public. I still don't think it's all that widespread among the elite - i tend to think most of them are only structurally bastards - they're actually 'bloody nice blokes' in their own terms (politics would be easier if they weren't)

As far as the teachers and the students -- who will go on to be the next gneration of public school teachers, and the Ruling Class -- are concerned, what we call "child abuse" is just a normal part of life, something that people just do. There is an entire culture of internalised physical, sexual and mental abuse, and it needs to change.

Chris Fay appeared in this documentary by Panorama the other night that apparently sought to debunk the establishment paedophile ring saga. According to this documentary, Fay is supposed to be part of some conspiracy to discredit vips by falsely accusing them of child abuse or worse. Some sort of insanely tenacious conspiracist then? Because Fay has been bleating about this stuff for a very, very long time. I am familiar with Fay through my following of Bill Maloney. Maloney's sister survived Haut de la Garenne in Jersey but killed herself after the abuse there began to come to light. Unlike his sister, Bill survived systemic abuse in childrens homes across Britain. Bill makes his own documentaries on the subject & although his style is overly dramatic & peppered with foul language his heart is without question in the right place.

The vague suggestion in this documentary appears to be that at least one vip, Leon Brittan, has been fitted up by Chris Fay, whether deliberately or not. A survivor of child abuse, "David" in the doc, claimed a man named Leon abused him in the 70's & when he described this man to Chris Fay sometime in the wake of the Elm Guest House exposure in the 80's, Fay suggested that the Leon in question sounded like Leon Brittan. It's said that David recognised Brittan after Fay showed him a photograph but the claim in this doc is that Fay influenced "David" to say he had been abused by Leon Brittan. "David" appears to claim in this doc that brittans name was originally brought up as a joke! This programme accepts that jimmy savile succeeded in abusing thousands of people in his life-time & managed to keep his behaviour almost completely out of the media & the courts. I fail to see the difficulty in accepting that the same could be true of other vips. People such as Ted Heath, who's name was completely exempted from this doc (which suggests the police are taking claims against him seriously & would not permit the BBC to risk ruining the investigations!), would have had even more power & cause to keep their crimes, particularly this sort of crime, secret. It cannot be in the very best of circumstances easy to investigate people of such public stature of such heinous crimes so long ago.

Whether or not the establishment paedophile claims are true, one thing is for certain. Given the nature of the sort of crimes that Harvey Proctor is accused of, it's hardly surprising that so few witnesses have come forward. Many would have been vulnerable people growing up in difficult circumstances. It's clear from the interviews with some of those in this documentary that they are damaged people on medication! Panorama has used them to discredit their own stories! Many survivors of the sort of abuse described turn to drugs & alcohol to suppress their memories & many of them would likely now be dead, often by their own hands. Proctor describes the crimes he is accused of in this documentary. Proctors name also appears on the now famous Elm Guest House list which appears on Panorama with many names blacked out. This list has been kept by Chris Fay since the 80's. He tried to get this all aired back then when the Elm Guest House story first broke. but the media had "D Notices" slammed on them forcing them to stop investigating & reporting the story. Even a local paper of mine the now defunct Surrey Comet was hit with a "D Notice" preventing it from reporting that vips were present at this brothel for under-age activity.

Mrs Castle was scathing of any neutral interest by Mr Brittan (Brittan was NOT the right person to hand paedo files to!) and revealed that a second secret internal inquiry had been instigated by him to find out who knew what, when and where, about allegations of child sexual abuse.

Ball, who counted the Prince of Wales as a loyal friend, had first been accused in 1993 by Neil Todd, who had attempted suicide three times as a result of his abuse, and went on to kill himself in 2012.The police investigated and six other victims came forward. But support flooded in for Ball from within the establishment and he was never charged. Retired bishop Peter Ball - who has been jailed for 32 months after admitting abusing 18 young men across 20 years - was a sadistic sexual predator who groomed, controlled and abused his victims, one of whom ended up taking his own life.

Ball, 83, was part of the establishment of the Church of England, considered both powerful and deeply spiritual.

He abused most of his victims while he lived in East Sussex and was serving as Bishop of Lewes - but would go on to carry on the abuse as Bishop of Gloucester.

He admitted the abuse, which started in the 1970s and continued into the 80s and 90s, at the Old Bailey last month.
'Chose victims cleverly'

Det Ch Insp Carwyn Hughes, of Sussex Police, said: "It took me by complete surprise that we ended up with so many people - it showed the extent of his offending.

"He would strike upon the vulnerable whenever he had the opportunity to do so."

The court heard Ball invited men to stay with him at his home to pursue religious interests in a monastic setting.

Cliffe James, aged 19 at the time, explained how Ball groomed him over many months.

"He prepared his victims and he chose them very cleverly - people who were vulnerable, unsure of their identities," Mr James said, after waiving his right to anonymity.

"He was sadistic. He would beat me with a wooden clothes brush. I was bruised and would be in great pain for days."

He explained Ball also insisted he shower naked in front of him, suggesting he needed to overcome his pride and humiliate himself, "following in the example of Christ and St Francis".

Despite the years of abuse in Sussex, Ball was able to leave the diocese in 1992 to take up his post as the Bishop of Gloucester.
'Mind games'

A year later however, then 16-year-old trainee monk Neil Todd prompted a police investigation, which led to Ball's resignation from the clergy.

But Ball escaped with a police caution in 1993 for a single act of gross indecency against Mr Todd.

Speaking from his home in Australia in 2012, Mr Todd described Ball as "not a very nice human being".

"The worst of it was mental abuse," said Mr Todd. "Obviously there was a component of sexual abuse but basically it was mind games and controlling behaviour.

"It stayed with me throughout my life's journey."

He said it took many years to convince people he was telling the truth.

Ultimately, after continuing to be haunted by his experiences, Mr Todd killed himself in 2012.

Another victim, the Reverend Graham Sawyer, described how on a visit in the 1970s, Ball tried to take off his clothes and wanted an "act of commitment" from him if he was to be ordained.
'Cloak of spirituality'

"The abuse started with very heavy suggestions that I remove my clothes and be completely naked in front of him," Mr Sawyer said.

He said Ball was a "monster" who controlled him with a "cloak of spirituality".

Ball was also in regular contact with Eastbourne vicar Reverend Roy Cotton, a convicted child abuser, who died in 2006.

Phil Johnson was one of those Cotton abused. He also claims Ball abused him in front of Cotton - something that Ball denies.

He said: "He was Roy Cotton's boss. It made me believe that everyone in the church knew about it and it made me completely powerless.

"Because of that, I had to endure another seven years of abuse."

The Church of England insists it is now a safe place and is carrying out an inquiry into Ball's activities.

It has apologised to survivors of the abuse and paid tribute to "their bravery in coming forward and the long wait for justice that they have endured".
