Stop pushing drugs on our kids

Even in the US I believe the terminally ill get "free" (qualify for Medicaid) hospice and medical care...

Wasn't this decision made/discussed a while back? Odd that it is just now getting press.

You're right. It was just a slow news day and they wanted to dredge up something supposedly unbelievable for their so called news

If the drug they approved was anything other opiate than oxycodone there wouldn't have even been a news item written.

So true. Oxy just gets clicks. I've even seen a bunch of memes made up from this story.

I have no idea where you made this significant leap in the discussion? What is your point?

His point I think was that if people got free health care, the issue of people selling their prescriptions to be able to afford health care wouldn't have been such an issue. It was compounded by the OxyContin prices which made people's monthly supply cost more than their rent. I bought from folks during the boom that had never sold drugs before, they just needed money to see the doctor.

How they define terminal is fucked though, which leaves a lot of people with inadequate care.

^ a billion dollars is a lot. But... One key aspect; Is it really more than a drop in the bucket of profits the pharma companies who pushed OxyContin on millions of Americans? I think it is nothing to those mega corporations.

And in regards to the OP, well , I agree that terminally ill patients of any age ( over like, 10 yrs old) should have access to proper pain management meds and treatment. Long term opioid analgesic therapy is not the most safe or sustainable path for pain treatment over a lifetime. I think if doctors are truly and fully aware of both the pros and cons of opioids, their long term effects/effectiveness, then they can reasonably be trusted to go person by person and decide what route is best for the long term well being of the patient. But I think they are definitely overprescribing by doctors who know little about he very powerful narcotic drugs they themselves are giving to patients regularly... It is a little worrying to say the least.

They were actually fined 634 million which by some estimates was about 25% of revenue and nearly 90% of profits from Oxycontin from 1997-2001. Three executives also pleaded guilty and paid fines in excess of 10 million. Purdue isnt a public company, and while large, they dont have all the ways to raise capital or at least the ease of doing so as say Pfizer.

Well that is a small victory against big pharma's ruthless campaign of FDA approved lies and the constant misleading facts about truly dangerous and harmful compounds. I'm glad they lost a good portion of their hundreds of millions of dollars in dirty/unwholesome profits. Now it's about time to get the suboxone manufacturers called out for their blatant lies about its abuse potential/effective dose and their sad joke of a drug treatment method, which generally (not always, I myself kept my sub dose low and tapered ASAP) just ends with the addict still heavily dependent on a powerful synthetic opioid. I think it's sick that the FDA is in the pocket of the pharmaceutical companies that fund their fuckin research and don't even publish unwanted results like negative side effects and long term damage for a new drug they want to promote as healthy and effective. Lying, greedy, inconsiderate assholes... Most of them at least.

I always yhought FDA was part of big pharma's marketing department, throwing the consumer a few vines and some sense of safety when shit gets fucked up and some drug kills thousands and their lies make them lose face otherwise....

And the total paid out for the Oxycotin shitstorm is estimated to be around $900 million in 2013 (or it might have been by 2014, I forget the exact date).

Not that it matters much but curious on the 900 million figure. The fine in 2007 was 634 million. I know other states have sued but cant find numbers on payouts if any.
