Naxalone question

Naxalone/narcan question Help please

do you have to go to the hospital after you have been "revived" from naxalone? And I know this may be an odd question but can one use it on themselves? I have a friend that uses a lot of opiates and says he's fine and won't od because he has the nasal naxalone but he uses at home which is usually by himself and I don't think you can use it on oneself but I am not a doctor and am trying to get an answer to show him what bl has to say about it, any answers would be very helpful. Thanks!

I see no reason why your friend couldn't use it on himself unless of course he had ODed to the point of passing out or being non-responsive. As long as he is coherent enough to administer it he should be good.
 
I am not doubting you but seems extremely odd a habitual opiate user would choose to administer naloxone while still able to be functional enough to do so. It would temporily throw them into withdrawal and how is he judging when he needs it? As someone who has been given nalaxone, I can attest it sucks and shouldnt be taken willy-nilly because you took a bit too much. Idk, your friend can do as he pleases but I hope he got the spray on the up and up as it can save lives for those who really need it, and would hate to think it was obtained improperly.
 
It was obtained legally, he is a veteran and have been on and off of the suboxone program with the VA (veterans affairs) and they gave him a few kits of it in the case of a relapse, I was just wondering because he is off and on h and usually when someone stops for a while and goes back on they can sometimes dose too much because of the toplerance drop so that is why I was wondering. I'm not sure when he would judge when he needs it however. I only have brief knowledge with naxalone and I couldnt find answers elsewhere online.

That was my main concern with him because he likes to push the limits with it and lives alone and he also will go on subs for awhile and then go back to h and with the purity always being different it could cause an od from relapsing with too high a dose
 
I see. I apologize for being a bit harsh. I still think it should be reserved for real emergencies, which would usually not include self administration.
 
It's possible but a little risky. Now he Probally thinks just cause he has it on hand he can push the threshold. He could shoot to much dope and go unconscious. He would Probaly die at that point. But if he recognized it, then i say it's good to have on hand.
 
I overdosed once years ago and I knew immedietly after doing the dope I had taken was way to powerful and actually called 911 ,but of course I was lucky theres a very fine line between oding and being aware and just going off to sleep and never wake up. It's great he has it on hand but I wouldn't count on oding and being able to self administer it.
 
Narcan or naxalone has a half life shorter than the opiate. Not saying it happens all the time but as a Paramedic I ran a few calls where a person was trying to administer and didn't make it. We were there to confirm death. So as stated before your friend is playing with fire doing this method. Most try and put it off due to precipitated withdraws that Narcan will bring on. Even if we got there in time to dose a person it was highly recommended that they be transported in case it wore off to soon. not sure I didn't see that end of it to often.

Would that being a short half life explain why the paramedics gave me narcan then at the hospital they had to give it to me 5 more times? I remember the doctor kept saying he was confused because everytime they gave me narcan they had to keep administering it because the heroin kept taking over. I thought once they give you narcan it clears all dope from your system,am I wrong? I do know even though it is an injection that narcan tasted like shit,everytime they'd hit me with it I got awful taste in my mouth and the nurse would say sarcastically good shit,huh!
 
Continuing to drink. Me and s my friend had a pretty deep conversation. Both going to the same conselur without even relizing it. Me going for drugs tho

yes exactly, it last way shorter than the opiate being taken at the time. I had patients tell me it was like being hit with a hammer when I dosed it. Many medical people don't understand what it is to be on it. I didn't till later on when I blew out my back and had three surgeries. I can say I had a much different outlook then.
