Study into Montreal’s ‘filthy’ crack houses provides portrait of vicious cycle of prostitution, binge use and addiction
Charlie Fidelman

“There was so much crack in the neighbourhood that users and outreach workers nicknamed the area Rochelaga.”

When anthropologist Nelson Arruda explored an east-end Montreal neighbourhood, he expected to find shooting galleries — dark, clandestine places where people inject drugs — and sex slaves addicted to the next high.

What he found in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve were crack houses — located every three blocks, and concentrated on a stretch spanning 20 streets — governed according to strict rules that included a ban on injecting and prostitutes who on the surface operated independently. To get inside, users had to be known to the house “gatekeeper” or seller. Arruda, who was already working closely with community street workers involved in harm-reduction programs for four years in downtown Montreal, got introduced to the east-end “Rocklaga” scene.

In a first Canadian study of its kind led by Dr. Élise Roy, professor at the faculty of medicine and health sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke and research chair on addiction, Arruda spent a year on the trail of high-risk behaviours at the intersection of illicit cocaine use. Starting July 2011, Arruda observed and interviewed crack cocaine users inside crack houses that are commonly called “piaules” in French, or tiny apartments. What Arruda found underscores the importance of the environment in public health approaches to addiction, drug abuse and health risks.

Roy’s team was already running a larger study called Interface on the risks and harmful effects of drug use when outreach workers warned that crack was flooding Montreal’s downtown streets. Unlike powder cocaine that’s sniffed or injected, crack cocaine, which is powder that’s been hardened into rocks or crystals, is heated and smoked. Crack users say it produces an intense high that’s as good or better than injecting, Roy explained, but it only lasts about 10 minutes.

Very interesting, although I'm suspicious about the comment on a single IV coke injection giving a half hour high (as opposed to the 10 minute crack high).

Anyone here with IV coke experience able to comment? It sounds more like she's looking for an extra angle to portray the drug dealers as controlling the prostitutes.

It's about that long. Not a 30 min rush, but off of good stuff you're high that long. A lot longer than crack.

Man I dont normally get "triggers" but that HD photo with the rock in stem is the closest thing to a trigger ive gotten in my life. For some reason watching addicts shoot dope and smoke rock doesnt bother me but the image of the loaded pipe was always my favorite part of the day LOL. Still very interesting article.

You'll find crack houses all over.

I once visited friends who lived in a rural area in the middle of nowhere, and grew up in the woods. We were driving around and passed by some really old run down house that basically looked like a shack on a dirt road in the woods, and my friend said, 'That's a crack house.'

I'm from a rural area. You'd would be shocked how much hard is a thing there. Stereotypes have it as an urban thing but it's huge up in the sticks, so is dope, only thing is they're pricier. And there are definitely crack/trap houses in the country. I crashed in one for a few weeks a decade or so ago...

Still, the gatekeeper or seller had a complicated relationship with the sex workers that Roy called “subtle pimping.”

Subtle pimping? Is it pimping if someone rents you a room to do any other kind of work? I know people who've bought drugs off the managers of their white collar office jobs - were they 'pimped'?

One participant told Arruda that the piaules would close without the sex workers. The piaules needed the prostitutes who needed clients to feed their crack addiction. When desperate, some agreed to sex without protection, Arruda said, and their prices dropped as the crack cravings increased. “When they start on a binge they’ll do it for five dollars,” Arruda said. “You can see the distress in their faces — on the corner, waiting for a client.”

Street based sex workers all over the world report a system of peer collaboration on keeping prices steady. The same exists in brothel environments. I imagine that if you were sharing a 'crack house' environment (I guess the closest Australian equivalent is a safe house in a street based sex work area?) with other workers, the response to you dropping your prices during the day wouldn't be very pretty.

Is $5 even enough to buy a hit of crack? It simply doesn't make sense for a worker (even a drug using worker!) to discount their work below their target. Street based sex workers in the regions I'm familiar with (even those with drug dependencies!) simply won't be bargained below the market rate for their service and/or drug of choice. They'll cut time/services or work for drugs instead.

It really surprises me what people will believe about sex workers. Even people who use drugs themselves, who should know better.

There is no such thing of establishing price equilibrium when crack is introduced into the picture. These girls will kill for a hit, you think they give a fuck about market equilibrium lol. These hoes are wildin. No room for econometrics. She is real out here mate.

True. What's with the ultra-PC and silly term 'sex workers'? They're prostitutes or as you said it hoes.

How do you know?

There's a big difference between doing a job for a hit of crack and doing a job for an amount of money less than market rate that isn't enough money to buy a hit of crack. Which is what I said was unlikely to happen.

People don't become idiots when they're on drugs or when they start selling sex. They still make rational choices. Why would you give away your service when it doesn't achieve your needs? I live near a street based sex work zone and know a number of street based sex workers personally. There's no crack here, but there is meth and heroin, and despite some (not all) of the workers having dependencies, prices have been stable for ages.

What's with calling people something they've specifically requested not to be called? What's your gain? You can call it "ultra PC" all you like - I just call it not being an asshole.

Have you even ever talked to women, men, and trans people who are prostitutes? They'll be the first to tell you that they do not like the silly term 'sex worker' to describe how they are prostitues, escorts, hookers, hoes, etc.

I know literally hundreds of sex workers from all over the world. There has been an organised movement, starting in the 1980s, to agitate for appropriate language in media and advocacy, including using the word 'sex worker' to describe people who work in the sex industry. You can easily google to find the origins of the term in the sex worker labour rights movement and numerous articles and blog posts by sex workers asking for their position as workers to be respected and acknowledged in language.

Also the "sex industry" includes more than just stereotypical prostitutes. It's not about political correctness per se.

Yes they do when they are on crack.

They still make rational choices.

No they don't when they are on crack.

In closing, you obviously don't know the nature of the drug crack, this isn't weed we are talking about.

You really believe that?

Well eye know ppl who've been arrested before, this based on stories they told me about. There's a few streets they don't care about around there supposedly and they do bust randomly though.

There's also delivery services around the city limited to different areas.

Are you a crack user? You seem reasonably in control of your faculties. Either crack doesn't turn people into irrational, self destructive zombies, or you're not talking from a position of experience either.

Dude, he's not talking from a position of anything, he's just being a contrarian because people are responding.

Studies, ethnographic and more statistical, how shown that macroeconomic behavior in these situations is still INCREDIBLY rational, and often follows even closer the "laws of economics" than the larger (regulated) economy (since the drug economy is truly a "free market").

PS. Rational does not mean they would not lower their prices if fiending, that is still a rational choice, since the goal is to be high on crack cocaine.

I see your point.

I completely agree that this is a thing, I just disagree that it's at all common for sex workers who use drugs and work to sustain a habit to lower their prices to a point significantly lower than the cost of the drug.
