MEXICO CITY —

Top Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has escaped from a maximum security prison for the second time, security officials announced late Saturday.
Guzman, who headed the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was last seen in the area of the showers in the Altiplano prison outside of Mexico City, the capital.

The National Security Commission said in a statement that Guzman went to the showers shortly before 9 p.m. and wasn't seen for a while. Upon checking his cell, authorities found that it was empty.

A search operation began immediately in the surrounding area and highways. Flights have also been suspended at Toluca airport near the penitentiary.
Guzman was captured in February 2014 after more than a decade on the run. He faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and was on the DEA's most-wanted list.

Guzman had been caught previously in Guatemala in 1993, extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico for murder and drug trafficking. He escaped from another maximum security prison, Puente Grande in western Jalisco state, in 2001 with the help of prison guards.

The Sinaloa Cartel empire stretches throughout North America and reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. The cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last several years.

Saw this, can't say I'm surprised his cartel basically runs Mexico and he has a fortune to throw around at one of the most corrupt governments and law enforcement agencies in the world. Why wasn't he indicted to the US where he wouldn't be able to just walk out is the question.. I know they had like 10 charges for him.

from updated article..
Earlier this year, former Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam told The Associated Press that sending Guzman to the United States, where he is wanted, would save Mexico a lot of money, but keeping him in Mexico was a question of national sovereignty.

He dismissed concerns that Guzman could escape a second time. That risk "does not exist," Murillo Karam said. He has since been replaced by Arely Gomez as attorney general.
Mexican officials had no immediate comment, but have scheduled a press conference for 7 a.m. local time.

I read the news as semi-fiction, so I consider this a pretty interesting story...

Yea semi fiction at best. I think everyone saw this coming...the guy was on the Forbes list of most wealthy ppl til they took him off. And I'm sure he owned the jail... Went to take a shower, water was t very hot or pressured so he decided he'd just go home and take one lol.

Isn't that the way it works in prisons lo?

Don't like the conditions and you can just leave haha..

Given his reputation you would think he would be locked up like Hannibal Lecter.

What really sucks is now Trump has something new to ramble on about.

I'd def be willing to bet he has lookalikes, or maybe he ends up gettimg plastic surgery....craziest was the narco who died undergoing plastic surgery... Amado Carrillo fumtes iirc..the lord of the skies.

D.E.A In disguise: Who really arrested el chapo back in 2014?

In the wake of drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s sensational escape from Mexican prison on July 11, explosive new allegations have emerged about the circumstances of the February 2014 arrest in the resort town of Mazatlán that landed him behind bars.

For more than a year, the official story of El Chapo’s arrest has placed elite Mexican marines at the head of the operation, with U.S. federal agencies playing a crucial intelligence support role.

However, a new report citing U.S. government sources claims that account is false.

According to leading Mexican investigative newsmagazine Proceso, the agents who arrested Guzmán weren’t Mexican at all — they were Americans, members of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Marshals Service, dressed as Mexican marines, working alongside one or more unidentified U.S. intelligence agencies.
