Anyone else gone camping, rough, in the woods or elsewhere? Any advice for a first timer going to woodland around York area this time of year for 3 nights?

Any good stories or pictures or recommendations of places to go in the future?

Things to take or not take? activities? do's and do not's etc. considering its not a designated camp site?

What's in your kit/pack?
 
Yes. We love camping. We have a 4-man polycotton tent called "Fudge".

We have everything a camper could possibly need and we have an electric hook-up.

What do you want to know, my dear Tangy? ;)
 
Coming into winter it is camping time here too.

We always bring along a couple of packs of those glow in the dark bracelets you get from party supply shops. Just as it starts to get dark we break them open and wrap them around any pegs or guide ropes around your tent that you are likely to trip over in the dark. It is really useful if you happen to be camping with a lot of people on drugs. Which we tend to do :sus:

Apart from nothing else it makes your campsite pretty and easier to find as you stumble back from taking a piss at 2am. They usually last for 6-8 hours.

taking an axe with you might be overkill, a cheap fixed blade full tang knife will do a good job of splitting up firewood if you learn how to baton with it.

^ this is the best swiss army knife I've had (alox soldier) for more regular everyday use.

also avoid anything branded by bear grylls, its all overpriced shite.

Another piece of advice is get organised before it is dark. Make your bed, lay out your warm stuff that you will need later that night so that when the sun drops you aren't forced to root around with just a torch. Especially important for cigarette papers etc.

Always pack for a cold night. Unless you have to wake and carry it a great distance, you will never regret having that extra jumper, gloves and beanie if the temperature drops unexpectantly. Spare change of clothes in case you get wet is also important, even if you are going for one night
 
Ceres you are probably right. I've seen what you are talking about on TV, banging wood on the knifes top to split the wood. Maybe I won't take the axe then.

Felix: Will I be harassed by badgers or foxes or grizzly bears? Should I set up my tent on an inflatable bed and float downstream? Is pointing a laser pointer at planes a good idea? How many tree's do I need to fell in 3 days to rival an average sized family of beavers?

Hey, nice one! Snugpak's are great - good investment. Got one a couple months back an was was using it a fortnight ago, it was excellent. =D Pissing down too but it kept us cooshty an dry. Is the 'Stratosphere' I went for though, a glorified body bag, but oh so light weight (around 1kg) and hardy enough for most conditions. The sleeping mat made a big difference too right enough.

I was just about to post saying frosts mora are the best budget camping knives to go for, I've had one for years and love it, I even use mine in the kitchen sometimes, edge is really easy to maintain with a few licks of a chefs steel between uses if the edge rolls.

I use a boker magnum camp knife for batoning and other rougher jobs, 20 quid, full tang, plastic removable scales for cleaning and very thick spine, ideal as a 'beater' knife.

Get some fluorescent orange paracord to make a lanyard for your knife aswell, easier to spot if you drop it somewhere and can wrap around your wrist when using it so it doesn't go flying.

Glow in the dark paracord is handy too.
 
I've got a titanium spork. La-de-da!

Ceres: Good advice. When ordering I was going for all black or green when possible, to blend in to the woods, but yeah if I dropped that black knife it would be hard to find. Hmmm, I've only got black 550 paracord too at the moment. Something to remedy...
 
Have you a camera for night vision pics?

Remember you need to dig a hole away from a water course to do a poo and bury it :D Shittin' in the woods is a whole new experience 8(
