London, This Is What's Actually in Your Cocaine

London is the cocaine capital of Europe. According to a report from 2014, the city has a higher concentration of coke in its water system than anywhere else on the continent; we're literally pissing away three times more of the stuff than Milan. British police have even stopped testing bank notes for traces of the drug, because within weeks of entering circulation you can guarantee they'll have been shoved up a nose and scraped along a CD case.

Cocaine is everywhere – except, it seems, in the one place you expect it to be: cocaine.

"The streets are awash with white powder, they are not awash with drugs," says Lawrence Gibbons, Senior Operations Manager for Drugs at the National Crime Agency (NCA). "We analyse everything seized from an ounce upwards – the weight street dealers typically buy at – and we are regularly seizing huge quantities of substances which have zero traces of cocaine. An ounce at the moment is never more than 22 to 25 percent purity, and after that it is cut again before it hits the street. Dealers and customers genuinely don't know what they're buying, and that is the danger."

Plenty of casual users truly believe their guy gets the best stuff, especially those who employ nifty marketing techniques, like offering £50 or £90 bags to choose from. But, say experts, the UK cocaine market has long since collapsed to the point where no street level dealer can truly know what they are selling you. So convincing is the mimicry and so effective the cutting, one forensic expert who assesses seizures across the UK claims he has only seen "one or two single grams" of cocaine in the last two years that have tested at higher than 70 percent purity, expensively bought or otherwise.

The collapse in cocaine purity is credited to importers' enterprise with products normally found beside a dentist's chair. Around 2007, they discovered cocaine could be heavily cut with cheaply bought benzocaine – a dental anaesthetic that mimics coke's numbing effect – in place of glucose, the previous cutting agent of choice. Benzocaine can be bought as an identical looking powder for around £12 per kilo from China, and can then be cut into cocaine at a ratio as high as 10:1 or more. Yesterday, two men from South Wales were jailed for conspiracy to sell cocaine; they had aroused suspicion after buying 12 blenders from Asda to mix together four blocks of blow with 5.8 kg of benzocaine.

Gibbons says, "If you go back to pre-2007, cocaine purity was reasonably high, but it was always cut with inert substances like glucose. However, there was only so far you could cut cocaine with glucose before the numbing effect – the 'Kojak test' you see detectives do on-screen – would dissipate. Dealers started using benzocaine or phenacetin, as they look like cocaine and have the same numbing effect, so they were able to cut harder to spread their product."

You might argue that the NCA – a national law enforcement agency – would say anything to stem the tide of drug use. But even independent testers claim that the nation's party drug of choice is teetering at near anaemic levels.

I would buy some coca leaves and chew on them.
But cocaine seems like a bad choice of drug, especially when it's not even cocaine.

I'd also go for the leaves/plants as well instead of powders.

The powder being sold on the streets as Cocaine is so cut with shit nowadays that I wouldn't touch any even if it was offered to me for free.

Additionally, if I'm in the mood for a Cocaine high (unlikely), I'd prefer to legally grow a couple of my own plants in the future for personal use if possible.

If you can actually get some legitimate coca leaves, there are basically no harms in it.
You need to chew a mouth full of leaves for approximately 30 minutes and you'll feel quite refreshed but I only saw that in South America when, you visit places with higher altitudes.

Don't they add like lime or something when they chew it?

And I'm surprised there was no mention of levimisole BC that's in practically every brick that comes into street dealers hands.

Why is there so much cocaine in the water system if there isn't much at the street level?

The detection limits for cocaine in sewage waste are pretty low. The article does mention that a lot of people buy and consume cocaine regardless of purity (obviously there's enough demand), and the 1% to 25% cocaine that's actually present in street level samples still gets excreted regardless. Ostensibly you would see a higher concentration of cocaine metabolites in areas with a higher purity.

Don't they add like lime or something when they chew it?

Lime (as in calcium hydroxide, an alkali derived from limestone) is sometimes added to chewed coca leaves to convert the cocaine into a more lipophilic freebase form which can be absorbed through the gums more rapidly. But it's not essential for the leaves to work.

And I'm surprised there was no mention of levimisole BC that's in practically every brick that comes into street dealers hands.
It's probably easier to list what doesn't get put into British street cocaine. At the described purity levels it's a disgrace. You would be better off buying a pack of No-Doz caffeine pills and snorting a bunch of icing sugar, at least that won't destroy your septum!

Go to Australia, people are paying $300 - $350 a gram for trampled shit. This is why it never interested me. Am happy to pay what I think it's worth but am not happy to pay for the sake of getting fucked over. If I wanted to do that I'd rather go gamble my money on sports.

Is there any reason to prefer cocaine to meth?
.

Studies have verified that you sound precisely 16735x cooler offering someone a line of coke or casually mentioning the fact that you did coke on the weekend than you do with meth. Come on, it isn't meth that rockstars snort off the tits of models, after all.

More to the point, I don't believe there's a wide scene for meth use in the UK. The closest thing they have is low quality racemic amphetamine which I literally cannot figure out why anyone would willingly ingest, let alone why a market exists for it. And of course whatever vaguely euphoric RC stimulant is doing the rounds this month.

I think the high from cocaine is quite a bit different than the high from meth. The are both dopaminergic stimulants but if cocaine was of a high purity and priced reasonably it would be preferable to meth, IMO. It's less addictive (IMO) and the high, while not as intense or long-lasting as meth, is uniquely enjoyable. It doesn't make sense to do it where I live though because the quality is complete crap & it's outrageously priced, whereas methamphetamine here is of a very good quality (generally) and you get a lot more bang for your buck, hell people give me that shit for free many times. Casual cocaine use is generally a lot easier to maintain than casual meth use, though, in my experience.

Tried it once three years ago.. it was fun but i can't justify the cost/duration ratio. - This was in Portugal however, and it was for free. I would never bother in Australia..

I hear what you are saying, and it makes me a little curious to try coke, but not if I have to pay for it...
I did enjoy the intensity and duration of meth, I must say, but I am not a fan of stimulants in general.
So, the quality of the high, if I agree with you that it is different than meth and preferable, could change how I think about coke, I suppose.

Crankit is definitely right about the stigma/coolness factor, I think. But I only care about the quality of high.

If I had a choice between a gram of good coke and a gram of good meth, both for free and I could only choose one, I'd choose the gram of coke.

I'd choose good coke too. Not everyone wants to be awake all night progressively talking over each other. Coke gets a bad reputation but half the time it is cut with another stimulant.

Pure(ish) cocaine is a completely different beast to meth, almost calming believe it or not. I enjoy a couple of lines with a couple of whiskey's then able to fall asleep by midnight. If you want a long 12-24 hr session then meth is your drug of choice, a long such session on coke simply destroys your nose and creates a horrible comedown. Not to mention the social aspect is ruined having to duck off and redose. Coke is a poor club drug, I'd much prefer a quiet couple of hours with mates at home shooting the breeze. It's the equivalent to sampling a couple of chocolates or eating an entire box, horses for courses.

On the flip side, it's worth pointing out that cocaine is significantly more cardiotoxic than meth. Unlike cocaine, meth as a rule doesn't trigger heart attacks or strokes in users who don't have some kind of preexisting condition, and has a significantly higher LD50 than cocaine.
